SUMMARY:Annual Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Event at WEPCO
DESCRIPTION:Wi-Act has the funding to be able to package 137\,000 meals this year and has the workspace to accommodate 650+ packaging-shift volunteers to do that meal packaging. So if you’re available for two hours anytime from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, consider volunteering for a packaging shift. \nPackaging shifts are very lively and run in time blocks 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.\, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.\, and 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Operations are well-spaced over two large production floors at the WEPCO Church Complex. You can register to be a volunteer on any one of those shifts online. \nChildren 7 years old and older can serve as volunteers. They play important roles in the work and get a lot of joy and satisfaction out of it. In fact\, Wi-Act regularly hears moving reports about heartwarming family dinner conversations after the event\, some of them very profound\, led by some of the youngest participants about what they were accomplishing. \nWi-Act is the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee\, composed of congregants from 11 Wilton faith institutions who live by their motto\, “We work together for good!” But in fact volunteers for this meal-packaging event extend beyond those faith communities to encompass the whole of Wilton and beyond. Among those many others from outside Wilton faith communities the “and beyond” now regularly consists of grandparents who join their children and grandchildren to make this a truly intergenerational event.

SUMMARY:Birds & Binoculars: A Birding Expedition — Exploring nature and spotting wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Drizzle or Shine\, Rain Date — Saturday\, May 25 \nThe birding expedition is led by expert birder\, environmentalist\, gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. The spring migration bird walk will explore Wilton Land Trust’s Schenck’s Island river walk. Together\, attendees will explore this birding hot spot that offers diverse habitats\, including open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, and swamps. \nDrizzle or shine\, Bear will lead a leisurely 2-hour walk\, pointing out various bird species\, defining calls\, explaining behaviors\, and answering questions. Whether participants are seasoned birders or new to birdwatching\, all are welcome for an exciting adventure. Witness first and foremost the beauty of migrating birds in Wilton. \nGrab binoculars\, water bottles\, supportive shoes\, tick and bug repellant\, and cameras\, and join in a morning of adventure\, exercise\, fresh air\, and learning. Additionally\, leave furry friends at home so they don’t scare off any wildlife we hope to see. \nParticipants have the chance to see and hear a diverse assortment of Neotropic migrants (returning from their southern wintering grounds). This includes Indigo Bunting\, Baltimore Oriole\, Scarlet Tanager\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Eastern Kingbird\, Flycatchers\, and Vireos. See many Warbler species as well\, including Yellow\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, and American Redstart to name a few. And with eyes kept to the sky\, attendees should hopefully see Wilton’s returning nesting pair of Osprey. These friends indeed nested for the first time in the Wilton Town Center in 2023! \nBear has been birding for over 30 years\, leading domestic and international trips for CT Audubon and other nature-based organizations. Bear really enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for birds\, believing that\, experienced or novice\, there’s always something new to learn. He also currently resides in Wilton with his wife and two kids. \nThe Wilton Land Trust is a community-focused nonprofit organization that conserves land\, protects biodiversity\, enhances ecosystems\, and builds community.

The meeting will occur on Wednesday\, Feb. 26\, in the Brubeck Room at the Wilton Library. \n5:30 p.m. — Members Meeting: Trustees will vote on the 2025 budget and members will elect trustees before the Board votes on the slate of officers. \n6:30 p.m. — Doors open for refreshments and mingling before the Annual Public Meeting. \n7 p.m. — Annual Public Meeting: We will hear from our newly-elected president\, the executive director and keynote speaker Anthony Pierlioni. \nThe highlight of the evening is hearing from Pierlioni\, our guest speaker — author\, world-traveling conservationist and vice president of theTurtleRoom. This is an event you won’t want to miss! \nPierlioni has published articles in Reptiles Magazine (USA)\, The Batagur (USA)\, Radiata\, (Germany)\, Testudo (Italy)\, and Trionyx (The Netherlands). His first book\, Black-Breasted Leaf Turtles – The Natural History\, Captive Care\, and Breeding of Geoemyda spengleri and Geoemyda Japonica\, was published by Living Art Publishing in 2016. \nAnthony Pierlioni’s 2025 Keynote Talk \n\n\n\nThe global turtle crisis has seen many species go extinct before our eyes. Through a lifetime of work as a champion for the world’s most endangered vertebrate group\, the impact humans can have on wild spaces cannot be ignored. \nThe fauna and flora that rely on these sensitive ecosystems depend on not only the preservation of their species but also on saving the wild spaces they call home. Today\, the global turtle crisis that started in Southeast Asia is now seeing the turtles from Connecticut being impacted at unsustainable levels.
