SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence and Computers in Films
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a presentation on Films about computers and artificial intelligence (AI) have been a popular and thought-provoking genre in cinema\, exploring the potential consequences and ethical dilemmas associated with advanced technology. From classics like “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) to modern blockbusters like “Ex Machina” (2014) and “Her” (2013)\, these films raise questions about the limits of human-robot interactions\, the consequences of unchecked AI development\, and the blurred lines between humanity and machines. Some films\, like “The Terminator” (1984) and “The Matrix” (1999)\, delve into the philosophical implications of AI\, while others\, like “WarGames” (1983)\, highlight the dangers of technology gone awry. These films captivate audiences with their visuals\, complex narratives\, and thought-provoking themes\, offering a cinematic lens into the potential and perils of computers and AI in our society. \nA Long Island based filmmaker\, film historian\, and lecturer\, Greg Blank has over 15 years of experience as a producer\, director\, cinematographer\, and editor. He is an award-winning producer for the show “Push Pause Long Island” on Verizon Fios1\, and as a documentarian for the films Undocumented (2016)\, and A World Within a World: The Bay Houses of Long Island (2020). Blank has developed and produced over 60 lecture programs for public and private clients\, including LIU Post Hutton House Lectures\, Molloy College\, The Huntington Cinema Arts Centre\, and dozens of libraries and venues around the country. \nRegistration suggested. SUMMARY:Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: Robert Penn Warren
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is a “way of getting your reality shaped a little better.” — R.P.W. \nJoin Wilton Library for a seminar series in which Judson Scruton takes us through a selection of remarkable poems by Robert Penn Warren from his seminal book Understanding Poetry. \nWarren was a major force in American literature during the 20th century. He won major awards in poetry\, drama\, fiction and criticism and is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes in both poetry (twice) and fiction (All The Kings Men). His text Understanding Poetry (collaboratively written with colleague Cleanth Brooks) underwent four editions and became a major influence in establishing a new analytical theory for literature. “The New Criticism” consists of the close reading and analysis of a literary text as an object in itself. \nUnderstanding Poetry provides a lens which will be used to discuss Warren’s poetry. It combines close observations of nature and reflections on human action. \nScruton\, M.A. (The Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry)\, taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. Advance registration is required. Register and find more details online.

SUMMARY:“Art Asks” Exhibition and Opening Reception at Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Artists often ask to exhibit their works at Wilton Library\, and although there is a Summer Show featuring local contributors\, some artists were unable to participate or do not live within Wilton’s boundaries. This February show features several artists who have made such inquiries. Thus\, the topic of questions regarding art seemed like a natural theme for the show. \nEach artist provided the library with questions about their art: what they hope viewers will contemplate when considering the work\, what they typically ask themself when creating\, or what their own questions are as a viewer. Those thoughts will be shared as part of the exhibit\, and the community is invited to think about their queries when viewing the works. \nThese pieces represent a wide variety of styles\, media\, and subject matter. The artists are: Grace Barbieri (Norwalk)\, Cindy Bernier (Norwalk)\, Lacey Bernier (Wilton)\, Shivani De Bree (Wilton)\, Gini Fischer (Wilton)\, and Christian Mouser. \nAn Opening Reception on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through March 14. A majority of the works are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

SUMMARY:Serendipity Chorale: Celebrating Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a very special celebration of Black History Month. Experience the Serendipity Chorale\, featuring professional baritone Edward Pleasant. The chorale will perform a program of gospel songs and spirituals\, along with songs from the civil rights movement. The group’s leader\, Gigi Van Dyke\, will narrate this music’s role in Black history. In particular\, she will explain how slaves sang spirituals to communicate escape routes to reach the underground railroad. \nVan Dyke has led Serendipity’s group of men and women of diverse backgrounds for 49 years. From all around Fairfield County\, music is their common denominator. The Lt. Governor’s office also honored them as a Connecticut Treasure “for long devotion to spreading smiles and songs throughout southwestern Connecticut.” The chorale even sang with Andy Williams and Pete Seeger and performed at the Levitt Pavilion\, the Westport Playhouse and at the Norwalk Concert Hall. \nCritically acclaimed in opera\, stage\, narration\, recording\, and musical theater\, Pleasant is recognized as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. He chiefly distinguishes himself as an expressive singer and a gifted actor with brilliant comic timing. Additionally\, prominent venues David Geffen (Avery Fisher) Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, the Texas State Capitol and the White House have heard his rich baritone voice. \nRegistration is required\, online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:WLA/SCORE: Target Marketing — Fishing with a Spear\, not a Net
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a small business presentation hosted by SCORE on Target Marketing. Historically\, the classic “sales funnel” characterizes the “sales lead generation” process. With this technique\, the seller casts a wide net over a large group of prospective customers with hopes of connecting with interested clients. Today’s digital world and related resources provide the seller with the means to implement more effective “targeted” marketing. Thus\, a specific benefit message is provided to a better-defined audience. \nDuring the workshop\, attendees will:\n– Examine the “traditional” approach to lead generation (“sales funnel”) and its implications and limitations\n– Present an alternative “targeted” approach to lead generation and its benefits\n– Discuss the importance of differentiating the product or service they offer to enable their competitive advantage rather than competitive price\n– Present ways they might differentiate their product/service\, and provide several examples to illustrate this concept\n– Discuss how to use their competitive advantage(s) to identify best target customers\n– Review the benefits derived from ‘Target Marketing’ vs. traditional sales lead generation \nPeter Engstrom is the founder and Managing Director of Mainly Marketing\, a consulting firm increasing businesses marketing effectiveness and sales profits for more than 30 years. Clients have included EG&G\, Cutler-Hammer\, EATON\, Kollmorgen\, Panasonic\, and others. As the SCHMERSAL USA and STEUTE Meditech founder and COO\, he profitably grew both into market share leaders in North America. Engstrom is also an Adjunct Professor in the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University teaching various undergraduate and graduate marketing courses. \nRegistration is suggested online.
