SUMMARY:Conservation Commission Walk–Quarry Head State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with the Wilton Garden Club\, Norwalk River Watershed Association\, and Wilton Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) will offer a guided walk in Quarry Head State Park on Sunday\, June 24 at 1 p.m.. Quarry Head is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Town of Wilton. The walk will include the adjacent Harrison-Smith property\, owned by WLCT. \nThe walk\, to be led by one of the Conservation commissioners\, will follow the newly installed trail-work addressing erosion of one hillside. Designed and implemented by volunteers\, this pathway also improves the ease of climbing that hill and provides clearer guidance for hikers in this area of the park. Attendees will also see the “deer exclosure” established about a decade ago as an experiment to assess impact on the understory when deer are kept away from the plants growing beneath the tree canopy. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be refreshments and time to ask questions and to visit with neighbors and representatives of the organizations sponsoring the walk. \nQuarry Head Park is located on Ridgefield Rd./Rte. 33\, north\, just south of Millstone Rd.. A narrow driveway leads into the park and there are parking spaces once at the end of the driveway. The driveway will be marked with balloons\, as the post and sign indicating its location was damaged by winter storms. \nThe walk will begin near the ruins of a former home on the property at the picnic table overlooking Long Island Sound. The Commission recommends attendees wear long pants tucked into socks and long sleeved shirt. All are welcome\, including dogs on leash. \nThose who pre-register at conservationevent@wiltonct.org will be contacted should weather require postponement of the walk. \nALSO\, SAVE THE DATE! Details of another walk\, to be held July 8 at 10 a.m. at Weir Farm to be led by Weir Farm staff\, will be announced shortly.

SUMMARY:Hillside Cemetery Walking Tour with Bob Russell\, to Celebrate 200th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Former first selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell will lead a walking tour of Hillside Cemetery on Saturday\, June 30 at 11 a.m.. He will give a brief history of Hillside and discuss notable people buried there. \nThe cemetery has been in existence for 200 years and has a rich history. A number of Revolutionary War veterans and Civil War veterans are buried in the oldest section. Other established Wilton family names dating back to the early 1900’s–like Olmsted\, Middlebrook and Comstock–are easily recognized. And\, of course\, Hillside Cemetery remains the destination of the annual Memorial Day Parade\, where ceremonies are held each May at a monument dedicated to 10 Wilton men who died in World War II.

SUMMARY:Birds & Binoculars: A Birding Expedition — Exploring nature and spotting wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Drizzle or Shine\, Rain Date — Saturday\, May 25 \nThe birding expedition is led by expert birder\, environmentalist\, gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. The spring migration bird walk will explore Wilton Land Trust’s Schenck’s Island river walk. Together\, attendees will explore this birding hot spot that offers diverse habitats\, including open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, and swamps. \nDrizzle or shine\, Bear will lead a leisurely 2-hour walk\, pointing out various bird species\, defining calls\, explaining behaviors\, and answering questions. Whether participants are seasoned birders or new to birdwatching\, all are welcome for an exciting adventure. Witness first and foremost the beauty of migrating birds in Wilton. \nGrab binoculars\, water bottles\, supportive shoes\, tick and bug repellant\, and cameras\, and join in a morning of adventure\, exercise\, fresh air\, and learning. Additionally\, leave furry friends at home so they don’t scare off any wildlife we hope to see. \nParticipants have the chance to see and hear a diverse assortment of Neotropic migrants (returning from their southern wintering grounds). This includes Indigo Bunting\, Baltimore Oriole\, Scarlet Tanager\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Eastern Kingbird\, Flycatchers\, and Vireos. See many Warbler species as well\, including Yellow\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, and American Redstart to name a few. And with eyes kept to the sky\, attendees should hopefully see Wilton’s returning nesting pair of Osprey. These friends indeed nested for the first time in the Wilton Town Center in 2023! \nBear has been birding for over 30 years\, leading domestic and international trips for CT Audubon and other nature-based organizations. Bear really enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for birds\, believing that\, experienced or novice\, there’s always something new to learn. He also currently resides in Wilton with his wife and two kids. \nThe Wilton Land Trust is a community-focused nonprofit organization that conserves land\, protects biodiversity\, enhances ecosystems\, and builds community.
