SUMMARY:Conservation Commission Walk–Quarry Head State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with the Wilton Garden Club\, Norwalk River Watershed Association\, and Wilton Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) will offer a guided walk in Quarry Head State Park on Sunday\, June 24 at 1 p.m.. Quarry Head is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Town of Wilton. The walk will include the adjacent Harrison-Smith property\, owned by WLCT. \nThe walk\, to be led by one of the Conservation commissioners\, will follow the newly installed trail-work addressing erosion of one hillside. Designed and implemented by volunteers\, this pathway also improves the ease of climbing that hill and provides clearer guidance for hikers in this area of the park. Attendees will also see the “deer exclosure” established about a decade ago as an experiment to assess impact on the understory when deer are kept away from the plants growing beneath the tree canopy. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be refreshments and time to ask questions and to visit with neighbors and representatives of the organizations sponsoring the walk. \nQuarry Head Park is located on Ridgefield Rd./Rte. 33\, north\, just south of Millstone Rd.. A narrow driveway leads into the park and there are parking spaces once at the end of the driveway. The driveway will be marked with balloons\, as the post and sign indicating its location was damaged by winter storms. \nThe walk will begin near the ruins of a former home on the property at the picnic table overlooking Long Island Sound. The Commission recommends attendees wear long pants tucked into socks and long sleeved shirt. All are welcome\, including dogs on leash. \nThose who pre-register at conservationevent@wiltonct.org will be contacted should weather require postponement of the walk. \nALSO\, SAVE THE DATE! Details of another walk\, to be held July 8 at 10 a.m. at Weir Farm to be led by Weir Farm staff\, will be announced shortly.

SUMMARY:Wilton HazWaste Collection Event
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 12\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Rd.). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. For more information\, contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs at 203.563.0180.

SUMMARY:Wilton Household HazWaste Collection Day
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, October 16\, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Road). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive\, or toxic (poisonous). For information on what items can and cannot be accepted\, please visit here. \nThe collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston\, and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. For more information\, contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs at (203) 563-0180.
