The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDr. Kelly Marino is a historian of 20th century America with a focus on women’s history and the history of sexuality. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. SUMMARY:Town Hall with Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 30 at 7 p.m.\, Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker will meet with residents in an open town hall forum at Wilton Library. \nThe Town Administrator role is new to our town governance system\, and Knickerbocker is the first person ever to serve in this capacity. He began the job in September 2022\, so this forum at the six-month mark will be a great opportunity for him to discuss his early on-the-job insights. \nHe’ll speak about his work in implementing the mission of streamlining Town operations and finding new efficiencies\, as outlined by First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice and the other Board of Selectmen members when the position of Town Administrator was created. He will also briefly touch on the history of Wilton’s classic New England “town meeting” form of government and the highly interconnected functions that exist between public\, private and civic organizations that help it function successfully. \nPrior to coming to Wilton\, Knickerbocker was First Selectman in Bethel for 13 years. During that time\, he worked closely with Vanderslice on various municipal and regional projects as part of WestCOG (Western CT Council of Governments). He was also a member of the Bethel Board of Education for 10 years\, serving seven years as chairman\, during which he oversaw the renovation of two school buildings and a comprehensive curriculum revamp. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters. \nConstituents can register for this event on the Wilton Library website. Questions can be submitted in advance via email. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters. \n  \n

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.
