This year the focus is on the meaning of community and the collective history from diverse perspectives through insightful programming. \nTo encourage readership and to kick things off\, a limited number of hardcover copies of The Great Divide will be distributed to members of the community free of charge courtesy of Fairfield County Bank. Books will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, one per person\, in the Library lobby on Wednesday\, April 3 from 10 – 11 a.m. and from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.\, while supplies last.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Panama on a Plate: One Country\, One Voice\, Many Flavors
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for an introduction to the foods\, aromas\, colors and culture of Panama as part of Wilton Reads programming. They are excited to present Chef Yadira Stamp\, an Afro-Latina native of Panama City\, Panama and chef/owner of Esencias Panamenas Catering in Washington\, D.C.. She prepares authentic Panamanian\, Caribbean and Central American dishes and beverages. Esencias Panamenas is the only Panamanian catering company in the U.S. to offer its food nationwide. \nChef Stamp will create a Panamanian tasting menu of finger foods to sample as she speaks about native Panamanian gastronomy and the traditional cooking techniques she still uses today. Culinary matriarchs in the Panamanian countryside taught her. She will also discuss the history of the Panamanian people\, and her own ancestral connection to the building of the Panama Canal. \nStamp was featured in the U.S. media as well as in Panama City\, Panama. She published her first cookbook\, Panama on a Plate: Favorite Foods from My Birthplace\, in 2022. She is now working on her second cookbook\, as well as developing a signature line of carimañolas\, selling in stores nationwide. SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Making the Dirt Fly: Building the Panama Canal (In-Person & Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a fascinating Wilton Reads presentation\, “Making the Dirt Fly: Building the Panama Canal\,” on May 1\, when Eric Ward from the Linda Hall Library of Science\, Engineering & Technology\, will discuss the massive construction project of excavating 238\,845\,587 cubic yards of material\, damning the Chagres River\, dealing with devastating landslides\, and building six massive two-channel locks. He will also explore current issues facing the Canal due to changing climate. \nDesignated as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a Monument of the Millennium” by the American Society of Civil Engineers\, the Panama Canal\, which opened on August 15\, 1914\, shortened the distance for ocean-going freight and passengers traveling between the U.S. east and west coasts by over 8\,000 miles. \nWard is Vice President for Public Programs at the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where he has curated exhibitions on topics ranging from the science of CSI and natural disasters to a history of bird field guides\, the Panama Canal\, and the science of Project Apollo. Ward’s exhibition on the Panama Canal\, titled The Land Divided\, The World United\, featured material from the Library’s A.B. Nichols Collection. Nichols\, Office Engineer during the Canal’s construction\, amassed a collection of photographs\, blueprints and schematics\, maps\, letters\, drawings\, and other items throughout his 10-year tenure at the Canal. \nWard will conduct his presentation via Zoom from his library office in Kansas City\, Missouri. They are clearly the diverse unsung heroes who lived and worked alongside the massive project. They also witnessed firsthand the human cost of progress as they fought to survive amid turmoil and disease. \nThe Great Divide is a TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick\, an Indie Next Pick\, a LibraryReads Pick. It has been named a Best of the Month Pick by Amazon\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times as well. \nHenriquez wrote four books\, including The Book of Unknown Americans\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best Books of the Year. It was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nHenriquez is also the author of The World in Half and Come Together\, Fall Apart: A Novella and Stories. She additionally earned the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award\, a grant by Sandra Cisneros honoring her father. Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduating from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, Henriquez now lives in Illinois. \nWiltonian Joanna Ecke will interview Henriquez. Ecke taught public high school English for many years and leads several literary discussion groups at Wilton Library. \nHenriquez will receive the Grodin Family Fine Writers Award. \nThis program will be recorded and available for viewing for 30 days after the event. \nElm Street Books will sell copies and Henriquez will sign after the presentation.
