SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jennifer Wallace - Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an Author Talk by Jennifer Breheny Wallace\, who will discuss her New York Times bestseller Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It – which features the Wilton community!\n\n\nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They pack their schedules with AP classes and resume-padding activities\, while family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. In Never Enough\, award-winning reporter Wallace investigates the deep roots of toxic achievement culture\, and finds out what we must do to fight back.\n\n\nWallace draws on interviews with families\, educators\, and today’s leading child psychologists as well as an original survey of nearly 6\,000 parents. Through this deep research\, Wallace shows what kids need from the adults in the room is not more pressure\, but to feel like they matter\, and have intrinsic self-worth not contingent upon external achievements. Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change\, Never Enough offers an urgent\, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help.\n\n\nWallace is an award-winning journalist and social commentator covering parenting and lifestyle trends. She lives in New York City with her husband and their three children.\n\n\nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library.\n\n \n\n\nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton.\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Thrive With A Guide.\n\n\nRegistration is required.  Register on the Wilton Library website.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Orchestrating Change
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Library invite you to the screening of the documentary film Orchestrating Change.  The film features beautiful music while being informative\, uplifting\, sometimes humorous and most importantly\, empowering.  Orchestrating Change tells the inspiring story of the only orchestra created by and for people living with mental illness and those who support them.\n\n\nRonald Braunstein was on the trajectory to becoming one of the world’s leading conductors until he made his diagnosis of bipolar disorder public and was shunned by the classical music community. He decided to create an orchestra for people like him with the mission of erasing mental health stigma one concert at a time. The film follows Braunstein and several of the musicians for two years\, capturing their setbacks and their accomplishments. The musicians’ stories are told entirely in their own words\, augmented with striking animation. The film culminates in a joyous concert at a major venue. It is a triumph for Braunstein\, who thought he might never conduct again.\n\n\nSeen across the United States on public television stations\, the film is the 2021 winner of the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. The American Library Association & Media Round Table voted it “One of the Top Twelve 2022 Notable Films for Adults.”\n\n\nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Chasing Childhood Virtual Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force presents a virtual screening of Chasing Childhood\, filmed in Wilton! Stream the movie for free anytime from Saturday\, April 17 through Wednesday\, April 21.\n\n\nChasing Childhood is a film about the unintended consequences of over-protecting\, over-pressuring\, and over-scheduling kids\, and the impact that has on their ability to thrive both in childhood and as adults.\n\n\nThe makers of this movie spent hours in Wilton\, filming in the schools\, on the athletic fields\, and in the homes of residents. Viewers will see familiar scenes from Wilton\, including insightful conversations in our elementary schools. Learn more about how Wilton is leading the way in shifting the culture of childhood and the movement to raise healthy\, resilient children.\n\n\n\n\n\nChasing Childhood Trailer from NYGrit on Vimeo.\n\n \n\n\nChasing Childhood was filmed before the pandemic\, but the issues explored are even more profoundly relevant today: what is the changing landscape of contemporary childhood and parenting? What is best for my kid?\n\n\nIn today’s childhood\, confined by structure\, stranger danger\, and helicopter parenting\, free-play has virtually disappeared. Experts are ringing the alarm bell about the dramatic rise in anxiety and depression in young children and teens. What if all this well-intended hovering\, fear and over-scheduling has backfired?\n\n\nJoin a virtual Q&A with the director and some of the experts and subjects of the film on Thursday\, April 22 at 7 p.m. Q&A panelists include:\n\n\n\nEden Wurmfeld\, Director and Producer of Chasing Childhood\nLenore Skenazy\, President and Founder of Let Grow\nDr. Michael Hynes\, Superintendent of Schools\, Port Washington\, NY\nGenevieve Eason\, Executive Director of Wilton Youth Council\nSavannah Eason\, Wilton High School ‘13\n\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Vicki Abeles\, the director and producer of Race to Nowhere and Beyond Measure.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
