SUMMARY:Allen’s Meadow Volunteers — Helping to Maintain a Native Pollinator Meadow
DESCRIPTION:A newly created native pollinator meadow is now behind the Community Gardens at Allen’s Meadow. It includes over 40 species of native wildflowers and 4 species of native grasses — it was previously a monoculture of an invasive weed called Mugwort. It is critical to remove as many Mugwort seedlings as possible during this first year of meadow growth. This helps prevent them from taking hold before the native meadow seedlings have a chance to get established. \n\n\nThey are holding a series of volunteer days this Summer and Fall (next one is Wednesday\, July 10). Consider volunteering an hour or two of your time to help ensure this native meadow has a chance to survive and thrive in Wilton’s treasured town park. Many hands make light work.\n\n\nPark at Field 6 sign and walk over to meadow on the backside of the community gardens.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Birding Allen's Meadow and Community Gardens with Joe Bear
DESCRIPTION:Join expert birder\, conservationist\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear in search of birds making a migration stopover at Allen’s Meadow on their way south to their wintering grounds\, some as far as the pampas grasslands of South America. Check out the native bluestem meadow\, woodlands\, field edges\, pond\, and of course the community gardens which are often teaming with migrants. Fall sightings in recent years have included Bobolinks\, Dickcissels\, a variety of warblers\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, as well as raptors including Bald Eagle. And who knows what unexpected migrant might put in an appearance as Allen’s is well known throughout the state for turning up rarities due to its diverse habitat!\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Birding Allen’s Meadow and its Community Gardens with Joe Bear
DESCRIPTION:Fall migration is underway with millions of birds taking to the skies having left their North American breeding grounds and heading south to their wintering grounds\, in some cases as far south as the Pampas grasslands in Argentina. Allen’s Meadow is a well-known birding “hot spot” within the state and beyond due to its confluence of habitats including open fields\, woods\, edges\, wetlands\, and especially its Community Gardens\, which offer a buffet of food to hungry migrants.\n\n\nCome join Wilton resident and expert birder Joe Bear to look for warblers\, vireos\, tanagers\, orioles\, an assortment of sparrows\, and several species of raptors occupying the skies. Bring binoculars and meet at the north end of the parking lot near the Field 6 sign. This is a Norwalk River Watershed Association-sponsored event.\n\n\nThere are four separate events\, register online for any of the walks.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
