SUMMARY:Birding Allen’s Meadow and its Community Gardens with Joe Bear
DESCRIPTION:Fall migration is underway with millions of birds taking to the skies having left their North American breeding grounds and heading south to their wintering grounds\, in some cases as far south as the Pampas grasslands in Argentina. Allen’s Meadow is a well-known birding “hot spot” within the state and beyond due to its confluence of habitats including open fields\, woods\, edges\, wetlands\, and especially its Community Gardens\, which offer a buffet of food to hungry migrants.\n\n\nCome join Wilton resident and expert birder Joe Bear to look for warblers\, vireos\, tanagers\, orioles\, an assortment of sparrows\, and several species of raptors occupying the skies. Bring binoculars and meet at the north end of the parking lot near the Field 6 sign. This is a Norwalk River Watershed Association-sponsored event.\n\n\nThere are four separate events\, register online for any of the walks.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Spring Migration 2022 - Birding Walks at Allen's Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Join expert birder\, environmentalist\, gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear for a series of free spring migration bird walks. Joe has been birding for over 30 years\, having led both domestic and international trips for the CT Audubon Society and other nature-based organizations.\n\n\nBear will lead this leisurely two-hour walk through the diverse habitats this birding hot spot\, Allen’s Meadow\, has to offer – open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, pond and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern nesting grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species including Orchard Orioles\, Bobolinks\, Indigo Buntings\, Baltimore Orioles\, Scarlet Tanagers\, Eastern Kingbirds\, Warblers (including Yellow\, Wilson’s\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, American Redstart\, Blackpoll\, etc)\, and Vireos\, as well as Bluebirds and Tree Swallows tending nest boxes erected by Bear.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Skywatch Reprise
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday evening\, Oct. 14\, the Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with Norwalk River Watershed Association\, Wilton Garden Club\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, and Woodcock Nature Center will offer a reprise of the educational and enjoyable Skywatch they hosted in November 2016.\n\n\nTo be held again at Slaughter Field at the corner of Nod Hill and Piper’s Hill Rds.\, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include sightings of several lunar\, planetary and other astronomical wonders through the telescopes of members of the John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford\, CT.\n\n\nThere will be a bonfire near the Piper’s Road entry where makings of s’mores\, hot chocolate\, hot cider\, and other refreshments prepared and offered by members of the Conservation Commission will be available to all.\n\n\nAttendees should park along Piper’s Hill Rd. and dress for the weather (as well as care against ticks) including long pants and long-sleeved shirts since the astronomers also will provide an opportunity to lie on the ground to identify some of the celestial bodies overhead. The Commission also suggests bringing a blanket to lay on the ground.\n\n\nWhile the event is free\, registration via email will help with planning and ensuring attendees can get up-to-date information about go/postpone to the rain date. Because the Skywatch will occur in a dark environment\, dogs are not permitted for this occasion to avoid any harm to attendees or pets. The rain date is two weeks later\, Sunday\, Oct. 28\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in time to join goblins and witches as they fly past the moon!\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
