SUMMARY:Teaching Autistic Children: A Way That Works for Parents
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another important SPED*NET presentation on Wednesday\, Apr. 29\, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilton Library. Robert J. Bernstein\, an educational and behavioral therapist\, will discuss ways to help your child engage\, assimilate new information\, and develop new thoughts and behaviors.\n\n\nWe want our autistic children to live happy and successful lives. Many parents\, however\, often approach their kids with an agenda: instead of offering acceptance and approval\, they want their child to do something differently—to change. Consequently\, autistic kids frequently feel that who they are is not who people want them to be. They end up hiding their authentic nature and keeping up a façade.\n\n\nRob Bernstein has been working with children on the autism spectrum for over 35 years. His book Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normal\, including first place for “Parenting Family” from the New Generation Indie Book Awards. His newest book is Uniquely Normal Manual: Using the Bernstein Cognitive Method for Autism (Future Horizons\, 2023). Rob has a personal link to autism\, having grown up with an autistic brother and as the parent of an autistic son. His family experience led him to train in developmental psychology and education\, the knowledge base that underlies his cognitive method for working with autistic children. He is well established with a media presence through his podcast\, monthly webinars that he runs for the US Autism Association and his YouTube channel with Marcia Eckerd\, Everything Neurodiversity. His work has been featured on Dateline and in the New York Times. Rob has presented dozens of workshops and keynote addresses at both national and international conferences. He is an international consultant working with autistic children and special education PTA groups across the United States\, the United Kingdom\, and India. SUMMARY:Challenges and Legal Issues for Students with ADHD and/or Learning Disabilities who are Transitioning to College
DESCRIPTION:Despite their intelligence and enormous potential\, students diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities face continual difficulty addressing transitions. None prove more difficult than the transition from high school to college. What makes this transition difficult is a variety of social and legal changes that many students and parents are not equipped to address. This puts them at high risk to fail\, despite their high potential. If addressed proactively\, however\, the challenges of this transition can be reduced dramatically so these students can have the opportunity to maximize their potential\, and not just survive in the post-secondary environment but to thrive there.\n\n\nRobert M. Tudisco\, Esq.\, a nationally recognized author\, motivational speaker\, practicing attorne\, and adult diagnosed with ADHD\, will address many of the social and legal changes that occur with the transition to college and discuss practical strategies for students to reach their full potential. DESCRIPTION:Assistive Technology (AT) encompasses many possibilities when you look beyond AAC/communication. Wilton Library hosts Alescia Ford\, MS\, OTR/L\, ATP\, while she breaks down the three critical components of educational design: Universal Design for Learning\, Educational Technology\, and Assistive Technology. She discusses assistive technologies to enable participation\, improve curricular access (math\, reading\, writing\, executive functioning)\, and support inclusion. She also explains what AT looks like (from low-tech\, mid-tech\, to high-tech)\, when more is needed (consultation and evaluations)\, how to include AT in the IEP\, and why implementation planning is so important.\n\n\nFord is a certified occupational therapist and a nationally certified assistive technology practitioner. She evaluates students’ needs for AT; trains students\, educators\, and parents on implementation plans; develops district-wide competencies for AT processes; and consults on literacy support programming\, accessibility and Universal Design for Learning guiding principles. DESCRIPTION:One of the best-kept secrets in the world of health insurance companies is that children (toddlers to 21) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders qualify for significant amounts of services in their homes and communities. This could be up to 30 hours each week for several years\, with most of the services covered by insurance. The important question is: What would you want your children to learn and join if you had many hours of enrichment\, support and staff per week?\n\n\nIn this program sponsored by SPED*NET\, clinical psychologist and educational consultant Michael J. Weiss\, PhD\, will discuss some of the most important instructions your children need and how to get it covered by insurance. He will describe a curriculum aimed at children on the spectrum who have good verbal skills\, yet struggle with behavior and socializing with peers. The instruction ranges from promoting an understanding of nuanced and symbolic language (e.g.\, idioms\, fables) to following conversations and storylines (TV/movie/story reading “therapy”) and teaching about other people’s perspectives\, thoughts and feelings (called “Theory of Mind”). SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors.\n\n\nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place.\n\n\nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives.\n\n\nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon.\n\n\nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home.\n\n \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school.\n\n\nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. DESCRIPTION:Students with learning differences who benefited from accommodations and modifications throughout their early education and high school are often surprised to learn that their IEP or 504 Plan is no longer enforceable once they transition to college. In higher education\, modifications no longer exist\, and while “reasonable accommodations” are available\, the process for accessing them is entirely student-driven. In addition\, in most situations\, educational rights transfer to students at age 18. For the average person\, learning to drive can be both an intimidating and a liberating experience. For an autistic person or those with ADHD\, executive functioning challenges\, anxiety or other learning disabilities\, driving may seem out of reach.\n\n\nAndrew Arboe\, a self-advocate with ASD and the founder of Driving with Autism\, will share his experience of going from not wanting to drive at all to being an expert behind the wheel. He will address the needs of neurodiverse teens and young adults as they contemplate becoming a licensed driver. Among other things\, it provides opportunities to develop empathy\, acceptance and appreciation of differences\, and it encourages learning about various relationships. On the other hand\, siblings can also feel deeply confused\, emotionally neglected and limited in their ability to achieve.\n\n\nSchool psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will examine how having a child with special needs can affect all family members and explain how parents can be proactive in ensuring\, as best as possible\, that siblings don’t feel sidelined when attention is necessarily focused on their sibs with special needs.\n\n\nSylvestro will also discuss how to keep tabs on the emotional climate of the household; educate\, explain and elicit questions from siblings (and others); ensure all kids feel prized\, recognized and celebrated; and enhance communication between parents/caregivers.\n\n\nThere is no charge for participation in this event.
