SUMMARY:Children with High(er) Functioning Autism — Instruction\, Services and Supports Covered by Insurance
DESCRIPTION:One of the best-kept secrets in the world of health insurance companies is that children (toddlers to 21) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders qualify for significant amounts of services in their homes and communities. This could be up to 30 hours each week for several years\, with most of the services covered by insurance. The important question is: What would you want your children to learn and join if you had many hours of enrichment\, support and staff per week?\n\n\nIn this program sponsored by SPED*NET\, clinical psychologist and educational consultant Michael J. Weiss\, PhD\, will discuss some of the most important instructions your children need and how to get it covered by insurance. He will describe a curriculum aimed at children on the spectrum who have good verbal skills\, yet struggle with behavior and socializing with peers. The instruction ranges from promoting an understanding of nuanced and symbolic language (e.g.\, idioms\, fables) to following conversations and storylines (TV/movie/story reading “therapy”) and teaching about other people’s perspectives\, thoughts and feelings (called “Theory of Mind”). In addition to the instruction\, a key curriculum goal is to connect kids to socialize together\, with close staff supervision.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:A Parent’s Guide to Executive Functioning
DESCRIPTION:Is your child struggling with daily routines and tasks? Do simple tasks take them an excessive amount of time or often go unfinished? Are you frequently asking them to focus\, calm down\, or hurry up?\n\n\nIf so\, your child may be having difficulties with executive functions — the mental processes that enable planning\, memory\, task initiation\, completion\, and emotional regulation. These skills are crucial for independent success both in and out of school\, yet they’re often overlooked in child development.\n\n\nAt this program hosted by SPED*NET\, Jeffrey Ruggiero\, an educator with over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in special education\, will provide valuable insights and tools to help your child thrive\, including an in-depth understanding of executive functions\, practical strategies to support your child’s development\, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning. He currently serves as associate head at the Southport School.\n\n\nFor parents of children K-8th grade. Register online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:How to Explain an ADHD/ASD/LD Diagnosis and Build Self-Esteem: A Guide for Addressing and Fighting Stigma
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, and Newtown Sped PTA presents this presentation and discussion. \n\n\nWhile the disability community has come a long way\, there still exists stigmas associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)\, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)\, Learning Disabilities (LD) and co-occurring conditions. In trying to protect kids from these social stigmas\, many parents unwittingly perpetuate them.\n\n\nRobert Tudisco\, Esq.\, a nationally recognized author\, attorney\, and motivational speaker\, will discuss the nature of stigma. He will address specific strategies to educate friends\, family\, the community\, and the public with a view toward dissolving traditional social stigmas and enhancing the delicate sense of self-esteem that many kids with special needs experience.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors.\n\n\nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place.\n\n\nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives.\n\n\nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon.\n\n\nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home.\n\n \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school.\n\n\nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. Parents also often feel helpless when trying to get schools to better understand their kids.\n\n\nClinical psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, and therapist Robert Bernstein\, MA\, will discuss why it’s critical for schools to focus on “what’s the child experiencing” in order to genuinely understand their behavior and help them succeed.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nA video recording of this event will also be available online.\n\n \n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Do You Live with a Picky Eater? How to Set Your Child on Track to Become a Better Eater
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library welcomes Todd Kellogg\, LMFT\, BCBA\, to present the community with explanations and solutions for how parents can help their children become better eaters.\n\n\nA picky eater is someone who eats a narrow and inadequate selection of food. Selective eating is a common challenge in children and\, to a degree\, in adults\, as well. The good news is that there is a wealth of evidence-based research providing practical behavior strategies on how to gradually increase the variety of foods your child will eat.\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Kellogg will explain selective eating/food refusal/picky eating and will offer strategies to promote healthy eating habits at home.\n\n\nThis in-person presentation at Wilton Library is offered by SPED*NET free of charge. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: School-Based Psycho-Educational Testing for 504 Plans/IEPs
DESCRIPTION:School-Based Psycho-Educational Testing for 504 Plans/IEPs: What Parents Need to Know About Academic Achievement and Cognitive Assessments\n\n\nA free\, school-based evaluation is required by federal law to determine if a child is eligible for special education supports and related services in public school. In this webinar\, clinical psychologist Mary Murphy\, PhD\, will explain the differences between school-based psycho-educational evaluations and clinical evaluations. She will show parents how to: 1) meaningfully participate in conversations to ensure that the right tests are selected to evaluate the child’s particular academic/cognitive challenges; 2) read/interpret standardized testing; 3) review data for trends over time; and 4) use test results to inform specific recommendations for goals/objectives that address the particular needs identified in the testing.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Reasonable Accommodations: From Secondary School to Post-Secondary School
DESCRIPTION:Students with learning differences who benefited from accommodations and modifications throughout their early education and high school are often surprised to learn that their IEP or 504 Plan is no longer enforceable once they transition to college. In higher education\, modifications no longer exist\, and while “reasonable accommodations” are available\, the process for accessing them is entirely student-driven. In addition\, in most situations\, educational rights transfer to students at age 18. At that point\, a parent’s role changes significantly: from decision-maker to advisor.\n\n\nGerri Fleming\, a former special education advocate\, will help you make sense of transition services in high school\, what to look for when deciding on a college\, and the accommodations process in higher education so you’ll be able to advise and support your teen as they transition to higher education.\n\n\nThis in-person presentation at Wilton Library is offered by SPED*NET free of charge. SUMMARY:Preparing Your Child and Yourself for a Successful Holiday Season
DESCRIPTION:For families of kids with special needs\, the holiday season is a mixed bag. While holiday celebrations are meant to be fun and exciting\, the realities of the season typically make them stressful and demanding. Routines and social schedules are frequently disrupted; travel tends to be hectic; “too many new people and places” cause anxiety and sensory overload; and expectations are likely to fall short. Although family members and friends may be well-meaning\, oftentimes they just don’t “get” our kids. For example\, they might not understand that our kids often need to self-regulate in ways they’re not used to: by crawling into a quiet\, soft space; laying on a cold surface; spending more—not less— time on screens; jumping on a trampoline—or mattress or couch— or chewing on a T-shirt.\n\n\nJustyna Balzar\, MEd\, BCBA\, co-founder of The Hangout Spot\, will join us for a short presentation\, followed by a lively discussion about strategies and scripts we can use to calm ourselves and our kids during particularly challenging times.\n\n\nWe will meet in a parent’s home in Wilton. (Registrants will receive the address specifics on November 6)\n\n\nRegistration is required.  Register online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Driving for Neurodiverse Learners [Webinar]
DESCRIPTION:A driving license means so much more than simply being able to drive. It represents freedom\, independence and is a sign of adulthood. For the average person\, learning to drive can be both an intimidating and a liberating experience. For an autistic person or those with ADHD\, executive functioning challenges\, anxiety or other learning disabilities\, driving may seem out of reach.\n\n\nAndrew Arboe\, a self-advocate with ASD and the founder of Driving with Autism\, will share his experience of going from not wanting to drive at all to being an expert behind the wheel. He will address the needs of neurodiverse teens and young adults as they contemplate becoming a licensed driver. He will also focus on the strategies he uses for driving and how driving has opened his world to new heights.\n\n\nWednesday\, March 15 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Being on the Same Page - How Parents Can Remain Effective Partners When Raising Kids with Special Needs
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton will host Todd Kellogg\, a licensed family therapist and board-certified behavior analyst\, on Wednesday\, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wilton Library.  Kellogg will discuss how the difficulty of raising kids has increased exponentially along with the challenges of growing up in today’s world. For parents to be successful in guiding their children\, setting expectations\, and enforcing boundaries\, they need to find ways to work together and co-parent in a collaborative manner.\n\n\nMeeting the challenges of co-parenting is even more critical when kids have special needs. As parents of kids with special needs know\, everything is magnified and missteps can be that much more problematic for the child’s development. In this discussion\, Kellogg will walk you through best practices of co-parenting\, successful communication patterns\, and how to bounce back after setbacks.\n\n\nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

DESCRIPTION:Join SPED*NET for this webinar\, “Special Needs Kids\, Extraordinary Parenting\, Strong Siblings\,”\n\n\nFor siblings\, the experience of having a brother or sister with special needs can be uniquely enriching.
