SUMMARY:Fall Migration Birding at Allen's Meadow and Community Gardens\, with Joe Bear
DESCRIPTION:Join expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener and Wilton resident Joe Bear for this free series of three fall migration bird walks at Allen’s Meadow. Millions of birds journey south this time of year to their wintering grounds\, some here in Connecticut\, some as far away as the pampas grasslands of South America. Bear will lead us on a leisurely two-hour walk through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer — open fields/meadow\, woodland edges\, the community gardens which are often teaming with migrants\, and the new native pollinator meadow. Fall sightings in recent years have included bobolinks\, dickcissels\, indigo buntings\, a variety of warblers\, orioles\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, as well as several species of soaring raptors including bald eagle.\n\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nThe event is drizzle or shine. Bring binoculars and park in front of the “Field 6” sign. \n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Spring Migration Birding at Allen's Meadow and its Community Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Come along on this free spring migration bird walk at Allen’s Meadow led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener and Wilton resident Joe Bear. Bear will lead a leisurely two-hour walk through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer — open fields\, woods\, woodland edges\, pond and swamp — to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern breeding grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species\, including both orchard and Baltimore orioles\, bobolink\, indigo bunting\, scarlet tanager\, eastern kingbird\, rose-breasted grosbeak\, flycatchers\, vireos and a variety of colorful warblers.  We’ll also get a chance to see up close eastern bluebirds and tree swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes that Bear erected in and around the Little Bluestem meadow.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nPark at field sign 6 in the large gravel parking lot.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Skywatch Reprise
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday evening\, Oct. 14\, the Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with Norwalk River Watershed Association\, Wilton Garden Club\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, and Woodcock Nature Center will offer a reprise of the educational and enjoyable Skywatch they hosted in November 2016.\n\n\nTo be held again at Slaughter Field at the corner of Nod Hill and Piper’s Hill Rds.\, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include sightings of several lunar\, planetary and other astronomical wonders through the telescopes of members of the John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford\, CT.\n\n\nThere will be a bonfire near the Piper’s Road entry where makings of s’mores\, hot chocolate\, hot cider\, and other refreshments prepared and offered by members of the Conservation Commission will be available to all.\n\n\nAttendees should park along Piper’s Hill Rd. and dress for the weather (as well as care against ticks) including long pants and long-sleeved shirts since the astronomers also will provide an opportunity to lie on the ground to identify some of the celestial bodies overhead. The Commission also suggests bringing a blanket to lay on the ground.\n\n\nWhile the event is free\, registration via email will help with planning and ensuring attendees can get up-to-date information about go/postpone to the rain date. Because the Skywatch will occur in a dark environment\, dogs are not permitted for this occasion to avoid any harm to attendees or pets. The rain date is two weeks later\, Sunday\, Oct. 28\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in time to join goblins and witches as they fly past the moon!\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Annual Household HazWaste Collection Event–TOWN of WILTON
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 13. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products.\n\n\nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner.\n\n\nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include:\n\n\nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid\n\n\nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only.
