SUMMARY:The Great Pumpkin Drop Off
DESCRIPTION:Turn a holiday that’s traditionally orange into one that’s a bit more green!\n\n\nWilton Go Green is partnering with Ambler Farm to offer our first Pumpkin Compost Drop-Off! Visit the farm any time from dawn to dusk between November 1 and 5 to drop off your jack-o-lanterns\, pumpkins or gourds to be composted right here at the farm. Please note\, no paint\, glitter\, googly eyes or candles are compostable as they can contaminate the compost when processed. No other food scraps or other organic materials can be dropped off.\n\n\nPull into the main entrance at 257 Hurlbutt St. and head to the top of the driveway by the Red Barn. Look for signage for the Pumpkin Drop and you can drop your goods in the bins provided.\n\n\nWhy should you compost your pumpkins?\n\n\n1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins sent to incinerators and landfills annually in the U.S.\n\n \n\n\nDiverting this material from incineration cuts pollution generated by burning waste\, which negatively impacts public health.\n\n\nWhen left to decompose in the landfill\, that food waste produces methane gas\, a greenhouse gas that’s far more potent than carbon dioxide.\n\n\nPumpkins and gourds are 90% water and are full of nutrients. Composting the organic materials captures these nutrients and water\, creating a soil amendment to benefit our parks\, gardens and farms.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Sustainability in Fashion - Curating an Ethically Conscious Closet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library and Wilton Go Green for a panel discussion of Sustainability in Fashion. Did you know that Americans throw away nearly 11.3 million tons of textile waste each year? That equates to roughly 2\,150 pieces of clothing per second. Synthetic fabrics used in fast fashion account for one-fifth of all the plastic produced globally\, exposing us to forever chemicals and filling the oceans with microplastics. The average American only wears a garment 7-10 times before throwing it away. Only a very small percentage of discarded clothing is re-used or recycled. Come explore the effects of fast fashion on the environment and vulnerable populations on a global scale. There are ways each of us can shop smarter\, lengthen the life of our clothes and commit to brands who put the welfare of their employees and the planet first. Attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win a private shopping party with 9 friends at the Turnover Shop! Style and shopping support as well as light snacks and refreshments provided.\n\n\nOur panel discussion includes Sandra Finkelstein\, Grace Lanning\, Sharon Sobel and Savonna Bocchino. \n\n\nSandra Finkelstein\, Creative and Strategic Fashion Brand Leader\, has deep expertise in the women’s\, men’s and kids apparel industry\, with over 35 years of successfully building powerful brand concepts. Grace Lanning\, Denim and Childrenswear Designer\, has over 15 years of experience in fashion design and has worked for companies such as Chaps Ralph Lauren\, Oshkosh B’Gosh and Kal Rieman. Sharon Sobel\, President of the Turnover Shop of Wilton Inc.\, has lived in Wilton for 38 years and has been President since 1991. Savona Bocchino is a junior at Wilton High School where she leads the WHS Green Team. Her interest in fashion and dedication to sustainability motivated her to launch her own Poshmark account in 9th grade aimed at reducing consumption.\n\n\nPlease register online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green Green Speaker Series: Dr. Katharine Owens
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Katharine Owens will share how she uses the arts to communicate about the pervasive problem of plastic pollution with her talk “Entangled and Ingested: Combating Plastic Pollution Through Art”. As researcher and artist\, Dr. Owens has spent the last year and a half creating a series of forty-six life-sized portraits of animals harmed by marine debris. She creates most of the pieces herself by hand sewing film plastic onto canvas\, but the largest pieces (including three life-sized whales) are being co-created with the public. Presentation is from 2:00pm – 3:00pm.\n\n\nAfter the presentation you can choose to stay and put your sewing skills tow work and help stitch one of Dr. Owen’s pieces. 3:00pm – 4:00pm\n\n\nWilton Library will be handling registration through their events page. Check in October.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green: "The Solvable Problem of Food Waste"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Go Green for “The Solvable Problem of Food Waste: How We Can Help the Environment and Our Community”. \n\n\nIn the United States\, 35% of all food goes unsold or uneaten – and most of that ends up in the trash. Food waste is a solvable problem and Wilton Go Green has committed to empowering our community with the resources and tools to be a part of the climate solution by being smart about food waste. Join us for a 60-minute webinar to hear the inspiring story of former Wilton residents\, Betsy and Jesse Fink\, venture philanthropists who have been at the forefront of the food waste issue including their founding of the national non-profit\, ReFED. Learn about what can be done to reduce food waste and the impact this will have on reducing climate change\, providing meals for those facing food insecurity\, job creation\, and more.\n\n\nRegister here.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Zero Waste Faire & Sustainable Living Expo–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Please read the letter from organizers\, below\, or refer to GOOD Morning Wilton‘s story:\n\n\nUPDATE:  MARCH 9\n\n\nDear Wilton Go Green Supporters\,\n\n\nIt is with deep disappointment that we inform you of our decision to cancel the Zero Waste Faire & Sustainable Living Expo for 2020.\n\n\nOver the last few weeks we have been monitoring the spread of the COVID19 virus\, discussing and reviewing our options. The Zero Waste Faire and Sustainable Living Expo is intended to educate and inspire the public through discussion and interaction. This cannot be achieved if the authorities are warning people to avoid crowds and unnecessary gatherings. We also do not want to put anyone at risk. With the Governor’s announcement on Sunday that the first confirmed case in CT is a Wilton resident\, we could no longer see a path forward that would allow the event we have all worked to achieve.\n\n \n\n\nSince we are unsure of the timeline for this public health emergency\, it did not seem wise to try and reschedule for this calendar year. We will be working to secure our date for 2021 in the coming months and will share that date with you as soon as we have it so you too can mark your calendars.\n\n\nWe have been thrilled by the tremendous support and phenomenal growth of the Zero Waste Faire from 30 to 103 exhibitors in 3 years! We cannot express how much all the enthusiasm from our committee members\, community members\, sponsors and exhibitors has meant to us.\n\n\nOn behalf of our entire Zero Waste Faire Committee and Wilton Go Green Board\, we are so grateful for your excitement and support of this year’s Faire.\n\n\nWe knew it was going to be an amazing year!!\n\n\nWith great patience and your continued support we will revive this energy and look forward to seeing you in 2021.\n\n\nSincerely\,\n\n\nTammy Thornton\nPresident\, Wilton Go Green\nCo-Chair Zero Waste Faire\n\n\nOriginal event:  The Zero Waste Faire and Sustainable Living Expo is a special event designed to educate\, inspire\, entertain\, and engage the town of Wilton and neighboring communities about zero waste and sustainable living. The Faire is sponsored by Wilton Go Green.\n\n\nBy sharing information and ideas from speakers\, exhibitors\, media\, and discussions of current issues\, the Faire\, a Zero Waste event\, will help advance Zero Waste practices that benefit everyone. With your participation\, this event will be even more dynamic than last year’s\, which received broad accolades\, featured over 100 exhibitors\, and had an attendance of over 1\,000 people of all ages from CT\, NY and MA.\n\n\nThere are a number of ways you can participate and we’d love to hear from you to talk about how you can get involved. SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green's 2nd Annual Zero Waste Faire
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Go Green’s 2nd Annual Zero Waste Faire is a special event designed to educate\, inspire\, entertain\, and engage the town of Wilton and neighboring communities about zero waste living. By sharing information and ideas from speakers\, exhibitors\, media\, and discussions of current issues\, the Faire will help advance Zero Waste practices that benefit everyone.\n\n\nThe event will again feature a broad range of interactive exhibits to help Wilton and Fairfield County become more conscious about and involved in practicing Zero Waste living. There will be exhibits from museums\, aquariums\, and environmental organizations with many fun\, educational activities. This year’s Faire will feature more exhibitors demonstrating and selling products\, such as reusable drinking straws\, compost bins and reusable beeswax food wrap.\n\n\nNew features–like the Fix-It-Café\, a Zero Waste Store\, the Eco Fashion Show\, a Zero Waste Tiny Home and The Problem with Single Use Plastics exhibit–will add more value to the Faire. For example\, the “Fix-It-Café” will enable attendees to bring clothing in need of repair and small appliances to get fixed on-site or taken offsite for fixing; the exhibit\, “The Problem with Single Use Plastics\,” will educate the community about the negative effects of plastic on oceans\, animals and the environment\, and will offer alternatives for plastic in and outside the home.\n\n\nExhibit categories will range from home composting\, backyard farming\, zero-waste cooking\, recycling\, and food storage. There will also be a Zero Waste Feast\, games for children\, entertainment and guest speakers.\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees are also encouraged to Recycle right at the Faire\, by bringing old electronics\, furniture and hard drives.\n\n \n\n\nNo single use plastic water bottles will be sold\, so attendees should bring their own reusable water bottle/coffee tumbler or consider buying one at the Faire.\n\n\nThe event is hosted by Wilton Go Green and organized by dynamic volunteers. This year a generous grant from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation will help pay for Faire operations. The Faire is supported by a Green Partner–Sustainne; a Silver Sponsor–The Junkluggers; and Media Partners–GOOD Morning Wilton and 95.9 The Fox.\n\n\nThere is no charge to attend\, although donations are welcome with a suggested amount of $5 per person or $10 per family. All funds raised will go to Wilton Go Green’s programs\, such as the Wilton No Idling initiative and the Zero Waste Schools program.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
