SUMMARY:Emancipation and Freedom: People of African Descent and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The historical importance of the American War of Independence for Black Americans is unquestionable. The number of Black men who served in the military during this war is between 5\,000 and 10\,000. But how do we remember and memorialize Black Patriots and history makers from that era? What lenses do we look through to see them? What narrative structure do we use to talk about the past they experienced? What parameters do we use for framing that narrative? And how does it relate to the more well-known narrative? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this virtual presentation by Dr. Robert Bellinger from the Wilton Historical Society.\n\n\nBellinger is a public historian with a Ph.D. in history from Boston College. As the proprietor of Righting Histories\, Bellinger engages in projects that involve research and interpretation of African American history\, local histories and historic sites.\n\n\nBellinger has been engaged as a researcher\, advisor or consultant on several public history projects including the National Park Service project “The Experience of Africans During the American Revolution;” the development of a Black History Trail in Concord\, MA; “Harvesting Heritage\,” an upcoming exhibit at South Carolina State Museum; and “Conversations of Freedom\,” the 250th anniversary exhibit at Middleton Place\, Charleston\, SC.\n\n\nIn 2021 Bellinger founded the African Seed Exchange (ASÉ) which documents the introduction of African food crops into North America by Africans and African Americans in South Carolina from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Currently Bellinger is completing a manuscript on the history of the Black residents of Lexington\, MA\, 1690-1820. Working with the Lexington History Museums this text will help expand the interpretation of the history of this Massachusetts community.\n\n\nBellinger serves on the boards of the Robbins House\, the Shirley-Eustis House\, Rediscover Mapledale\, the Slave Legacy History Coalition\, Lexington History Museums\, and Middleton Place in Charleston\, SC. Bellinger is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution\, the Massachusetts Historical Society\, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts\, and the African America Historical and Genealogical Society.\n\n \n\n\nThe talk will be held virtually on Thursday\, Sept. 10\, at 7 p.m.\n\n\nThe event is free for Historical Society members. SUMMARY:Music During The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This year we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution! Join us at the Wilton Historical Society on Wednesday\, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. for a presentation about music during the Revolution by Christine Hauck.\n\n\nHauck is a visual arts educator\, lecturer\, multimedia artist and award-winning designer. Through her graffeast studio\, she creates marketing\, branding and collateral materials. She holds an M.A. in History of Decorative Arts and Curatorial Studies from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum; a degree in Graphics and Advertising from Parsons School of Design\, including a postgraduate seminar in Japan; and a B.A. in Art History from Vassar College. She was formerly an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in Digital Media.\n\n\nThis lecture will focus on the American Revolutionary Era (1763–1783) and what the residents of Wilton in 1776 would have been listening to at the time. Hauck will share her research journey to identify the top composers or music makers of the area and the types of music popular in 1776 from patriotic and marching songs to social and dance music\, to psalms and symphonies.\n\n\nRegistration is required. She is professor emerita of history at Central Connecticut State University\, where she taught Early American history for 25 years. SUMMARY:More than a Pastime: The Evolution of Tourism in Wilton and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Thursday\, June 18 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by Prof. Eric Zuelow exploring the history of travel and tourism in Wilton and as a global phenomenon.\n\n\nTourism is far more than a pastime. It is an economic engine\, a source of cultural propaganda\, a pathway to self-improvement and healthfulness\, and a shaper of identities. It fueled the reformation of landscapes\, was utilized to various ends by political regimes of all stripes\, and perhaps most of all\, helped to convince all of us that we desperately “need a vacation.” How and why did all of this happen? Travel\, regardless of conveyance\, is often arduous\, so what drew people to travel for fun? How and why did tastes change over time? This lecture will trace the evolution of tourism globally\, while illustrating how much larger changes impacted the people of Wilton.\n\n\nZuelow (University of New England) is among the leading historians of modern tourism. DESCRIPTION:Food has long carried political meaning\, and its significance in revolutionary America is no exception. Join art and culinary historian Nancy Siegel for a lecture and historic food tasting which investigates a distinct genre of culinary-inspired satirical prints produced by artists sympathetic to the plight of American colonists. Imagine King George III placing a fleet of ships in an oven about to be baked like gingerbread\, the Prince of Wales gorging himself on the fortunes of Empire\, the American colonies represented as a kettle of fish\, exploding teapots—visual metaphors that spoke to the conditions and events that eventually dismantled the British Empire: non-importation movements in the American colonies\, complex trade embargoes\, protests over taxation\, the anti-saccharite movement that called for boycotts of sugar from the West Indies produced by enslaved laborers\, and—ultimately—Revolution.\n\n\nAbout Nancy Siegel:\n\n\nNancy Siegel is Assistant Dean and Professor of Art History & Culinary History at Towson University\, where she specializes in American landscape studies\, underrepresented women artists of the 19th century\, print culture\, and culinary history of the 18th and 19th centuries. She provides historical cooking demonstrations\, tastings\, and lectures widely on landscape and food histories in addition to serving as an art and culinary consultant for museums and non-profit institutions. Journalist Larry Epstein wrote\, produced and researched the project\, which won an award at the 67th annual NY Emmy Awards.\n\n\nOn Thursday\, Jan. 22\, at 7 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society\, Epstein will present this film along with a Q&A session afterwards.\n\n\nEpstein is a two-time Emmy award-winning documentary and news producer\, journalist\, writer\, anchor and corporate copywriter.
