DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Historical Society is thrilled to be partnering with\nEscapism Productions for an upcoming immersive historical theatre experience!\n\n\nConnecticut\, 1793: A wasting sickness has descended upon the parish of Millbrook\, carrying off entire households and leaving several of the community’s governing offices vacant. With several civic leaders among the dead\, the remaining inhabitants have been summoned to the meetinghouse to account for the spread of the illness\, and determine who can be trusted to restore order.\n\n\nFear has already taken root. Neighbors whisper that the deaths are no ordinary work of consumption. Strange marks have been discovered upon the bodies. The newly buried do not seem to rest easily. Some claim that something moves between the sickrooms after nightfall\, feeding upon the living while hiding behind a familiar face.\n\n\nAs more evidence is gathered and old suspicions rise to the surface\, another death strikes before the assembled parish. Someone in Millbrook knows more than they confess.\n\n\nBefore the meeting can end\, the inhabitants must uncover what is consuming their community and determine whether the evil they seek lies beneath the earth or stands among them.\n\n \n\n\nThis immersive production is performed at the Wilton Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:Colonial Tavern Night returns to the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday\, Oct. 3. Join us for an evening of great food\, drinks\, games\, and trivia!\n\n\nTaverns and inns were an integral part of 18th century Wilton\, serving as restaurants\, bars\, rest stops for weary travelers and community centers. These businesses were so vital that for a time\, Connecticut colonial law actually required several towns to have at least one tavern open. On Oct. 3\, from 6-8:30 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will party like it’s 1779 by hosting its own one night only tavern at the museum!\n\n\nAttendees can participate in that evening’s history pub trivia contest!\n\n\nTicket includes open bar with food courtesy of Jeff’s BBQ. This event is for adults 21+. Tickets are $60 for Wilton Historical Society members and $75 for non-members. SUMMARY:Iconoclasm in Wilton: The Revolutionary-era Statue of King George III
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society on Wednesday\, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for a presentation by University of Delaware professor Wendy Bellion that will explore the 1776 tearing down of the King George statue and Wilton’s direct role in the historic events that followed.\n\n\nOn the night of July 9\, 1776\, a crowd emboldened by a public reading of the Declaration of Independence pulled a huge equestrian statue of George III from its pedestal at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan. A British officer conveyed the decapitated head to London\, intending to demonstrate the patriots’ defiance\, and soldiers transported the remaining fragments via Wilton to Litchfield\, where the statue was melted down and recast as ammunition for Continental soldiers. En route\, loyalists in Wilton absconded with pieces of the statue\, concealing them in fields\, swamps and cellars. This talk revisits this dramatic episode of the American Revolution and explores its lesser-known afterlife in the 19th- and 20th century\, when the fragments re-emerged as historical relics and re-enactors recreated the lost statue — only to destroy it all over again.\n\n\nBellion is Professor of Art History and Sewell C. Biggs Chair in American Art at the University of Delaware. Her scholarship focuses on the art and material culture of the 18th- and 19th-century Atlantic world and the early modern Americas. Her most recent publications include the books Iconoclasm in New York: Revolution to Reenactment (2019); Citizen Spectator: Art\, Illusion and Visual Perception in Early National America (2011)\, which was awarded the Smithsonian Institution’s Eldredge Prize; and the co-edited volume Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century: Art\, Mobility\, and Change (2023).
