SUMMARY:2023 League of Women Voters Candidate Forum: Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library\, and GOOD Morning Wilton will cosponsor two events at which voters can hear from candidates running for positions on the Board of Selectmen\, the Board of Education\, and the Board of Finance. Both events will follow a Cumulative Time Format and both will be moderated by a League of Women Voters-certified\, out-of-town moderator who will present questions submitted by the public in written form. The sessions will take place in Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room and will be live-streamed on GOOD Morning Wilton‘s website. In addition\, the sessions will be recorded for later viewing on GOOD Morning Wilton and the Wilton Library website .\n\n\nThe Tuesday\, Oct. 24 forum will feature the candidates running for the Board of Education. The Thursday\, Oct. 26 forum will feature the candidates running for the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance. Both events will start at 7 p.m. The sessions will provide community members an opportunity to hear from the candidates who seek to serve and make critical decisions facing the town in the coming years; and to pose questions to them that will highlight their goals and priorities.\n\n\nQuestions for the candidates may be submitted in advance through the Wilton League of Women Voters via email or live from the audience in the Brubeck Room. Here are some important guidelines for submitting questions: anonymous emails will not be accepted; only one question can be submitted per email; all questions must be applicable to all candidates and pertinent to local issues; questions targeted at one specific candidate will not be accepted. All questions will be screened for legibility\, duplication\, and may be combined or condensed. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 30 at 7 p.m.\, Wilton Town Administrator Matt Knickerbocker will meet with residents in an open town hall forum at Wilton Library.\n\n\nThe Town Administrator role is new to our town governance system\, and Knickerbocker is the first person ever to serve in this capacity. He began the job in September 2022\, so this forum at the six-month mark will be a great opportunity for him to discuss his early on-the-job insights.\n\n\nHe’ll speak about his work in implementing the mission of streamlining Town operations and finding new efficiencies\, as outlined by First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice and the other Board of Selectmen members when the position of Town Administrator was created. He will also briefly touch on the history of Wilton’s classic New England “town meeting” form of government and the highly interconnected functions that exist between public\, private and civic organizations that help it function successfully.\n\n\nPrior to coming to Wilton\, Knickerbocker was First Selectman in Bethel for 13 years. During that time\, he worked closely with Vanderslice on various municipal and regional projects as part of WestCOG (Western CT Council of Governments). He was also a member of the Bethel Board of Education for 10 years\, serving seven years as chairman\, during which he oversaw the renovation of two school buildings and a comprehensive curriculum revamp.\n\n\nThis program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library and Wilton League of Women Voters.\n\n \n\n\nConstituents can register for this event on the Wilton Library website. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.\, the CT League of Women Voters\, the Westport Library\, the Wilton League of Women Voters\, and other Leagues within the district will sponsor a candidate forum between Jim Himes (D) and Jonathan Riddle (R) for the 4th Congressional District.\n\n\nThe format will be moderated by Kay Maxwell of the CT League of Women Voters and publicly live-streamed from the Trefz Forum at the Westport Library. Online registration is required.\n\n\nConstituents will be able to submit written questions upon registration with Westport Library via email and thereafter up to the day of debate. Consistent with League guidelines\, constituent questions will be screened by LWV (one screener from each major party) for clarity\, non-duplication\, and applicability to both candidates.\n\n\nThe LWV is a non-partisan organization that encourages informed and active participation in government\, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues\, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. DESCRIPTION:on Tuesday\, Oct. 13\, starting at 7 p.m.\, to hear and see the candidates running for State Senate 26th District and State House of Representatives 143rd District\, as they answer questions submitted by Wilton voters.\n\n\nThe event is being brought to you by GOOD Morning Wilton\, Wilton Library\, and the Wilton League of Women Voters. \n\n\nThere will be two debates. The first forum will match up Will Haskell (D) and Kim Healy(R/Independent) for State Senate 26th District\, from 7-8 p.m. The second forum features Stephanie Thomas (D/Working Families) and Patrizia Zucaro (R/Independent) for State House 143rd District from 8:30-9:30 p.m.\n\n\nThe debate sessions will follow a modified town hall format moderated by Marianne Pollak of the Stamford LWV\, who will present questions submitted by the public to the candidates.\n\n\nBoth debates will be live-streamed from Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room. Please note:  following current protocols there will be no live audience in the building.\n\n \n\n\nThe WLWV is soliciting questions ahead of the debates via email. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.\, the Wilton League of Women Voters\, the Wilton Library\, the Wilton Historical Society\, and the James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 will all co-sponsor a movie screening and panel discussion on of the documentary film The Hello Girls. This film tells the story of the 223 women sent to France in 1918 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to work on the war effort as telephone operators. After a 60-year effort\, with the help of Senator Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs\, they finally won recognition in 1977.\n\n\nThe event is part of Wilton’s town-wide Centennial Celebrations of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment. Panelists joining for the discussion following the screening include Ret. Captain Doris Lippman\, EdD\, US Army\, Vietnam Veteran\, and recipient of the Honorary Order of the Purple Heart; Dr. Amy Pettigrew\, granddaughter of “Hello Girl” Ellen Turner and former Dean\, Dade College School of Nursing and Xavier University School of Nursing; and Dr. Darla Shaw\, Professor Emeritus\, at Western Connecticut State University\, and beloved actor/depictor of Women in History.\n\n\nRegistration is strongly urged\, and can be done online or call 203.762.6334. DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society\n\n\nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m..\n\n\nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort.\n\n\nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States.\n\n\nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception.\n\n \n\n\nAll are welcome. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. The mission of the Connecticut Insurance Department is to protect consumers through regulation of the industry\, outreach\, education\, and advocacy. All are welcome to attend.\n\n\nMais\, a Wilton resident\, was appointed by Gov. Ned Lamont to be Connecticut’s 33rd Insurance Commissioner. Mais previously was a member of Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services\, providing industry-leading thought leadership and insight on US and international regulatory affairs and related topics to the financial services sector. He primarily focused on the insurance sector—both US and internationally—as a subject matter specialist and resource on insurance regulation\, and expert in corporate governance and responsibility in both the public and private sector.\n\n\nO’Sullivan heads the Consumer Affairs Division that receives and reviews complaints from Connecticut residents\, including claims disputes and serves as mediator in those cases. O’Sullivan has held positions in the insurance industry including claims management\, sales management and compliance.\n\n\nThe Wilton League of Women Voters\, a non-partisan political organization open to all\, not only encourages informed active participation in government\, but also works to increase the understanding of major public policy issues.
