SUMMARY:2023 League of Women Voters Candidate Forum: Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library\, and GOOD Morning Wilton will cosponsor two events at which voters can hear from candidates running for positions on the Board of Selectmen\, the Board of Education\, and the Board of Finance. Both events will follow a Cumulative Time Format and both will be moderated by a League of Women Voters-certified\, out-of-town moderator who will present questions submitted by the public in written form. The sessions will take place in Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room and will be live-streamed on GOOD Morning Wilton‘s website. In addition\, the sessions will be recorded for later viewing on GOOD Morning Wilton and the Wilton Library website .\n\n\nThe Tuesday\, Oct. 24 forum will feature the candidates running for the Board of Education. The Thursday\, Oct. 26 forum will feature the candidates running for the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance. Both events will start at 7 p.m. The sessions will provide community members an opportunity to hear from the candidates who seek to serve and make critical decisions facing the town in the coming years; and to pose questions to them that will highlight their goals and priorities.\n\n\nQuestions for the candidates may be submitted in advance through the Wilton League of Women Voters via email or live from the audience in the Brubeck Room. Here are some important guidelines for submitting questions: anonymous emails will not be accepted; only one question can be submitted per email; all questions must be applicable to all candidates and pertinent to local issues; questions targeted at one specific candidate will not be accepted. Her most recent memoir\, Everything Will Be Okay\, will be the topic of conversation between Buckmir\, Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center Ann Rodwell-Lawton\, and Deputy Chief Robert Cipolla from the Wilton Police Department.\n\n\nBuckmir is the author of Everything Will Be Okay and Plenty of Laughs: One Woman’s Journey Navigating the Online Dating Waters. She also contributes to a biweekly dating column called\, Oh Dana that gives advice on relationship topics. Buckmir believes that storytelling not only entertains\, but reminds us that we are sharing a collective experience that makes us a little more connected and a little less lonely. This philosophy and her teaching background inspired her to create a workshop and coaching program\, Write your story: From Idea to Publication\, where she mentors aspiring authors.\n\n\nAnn Rodwell-Lawton is the Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC). Ann oversees DVCC’s community initiatives\, direct services programs\, and quality assurance efforts. Ann has worked in the fields of domestic violence and sexual violence for ten years. DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a unique opportunity for an insider’s look at costume designing for television and film. Learn about Judith Gellman’s career—how she got there from an early start in the fashion industry in NY to Chicago\, Toronto and eventually L.A.—and then about how a costume designer works with producers\, directors and actors\, as well as others behind the scenes. Gellman uses her own experiences to talk about what goes into being a successful costume designer in films and TV.\n\n\nJudith Gellman is a Costume Designer in the entertainment industry who has worked on over 100 hours of television and film. She has designed for stars including Carol Burnett\, Elizabeth Taylor\, Peter O’Toole\, Bill Murray\, Mary Tyler Moore\, and Lily Tomlin among many others. Judith received her first of four submissions for an Emmy Award for her period design work on a Children’s After School Special for ABC. Some of the theatrical films she designed were Meatballs\, Head Office\, Adventures in Babysitting\, Getting Away with Murder\, Firehouse Dog and Ideal Home. Dr. Suskin will discuss the hereditary basis of breast cancer as well as the important role genetic counseling and testing play in empowering patients and families to make informed decisions regarding cancer treatment and prevention. She will also address common myths surrounding cancer genetics. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Teen PeaceWorks and Wilton Library are co-hosting “Is Your Daughter Safe? The Her-Self Awareness Lecture” about safety for young women\, and featuring the mother of a teen girl murdered in CT.\n\n\nDonna Cimarelli\, CEO and co-founder of the Maren Sanchez Foundation\, is the mother of Maren Sanchez\, a Milford\, CT teenager who died after being stabbed by an obsessed classmate in 2014.\n\n\nThis presentation\, “Her-Self Awareness Lecture” trains young people on how to use situational awareness to identify pre-incident indicators that can result in dangerous situations. The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. The goal is to teach young women and girls how to trust and follow their instincts and pay attention to that gut feeling.\n\n\n The lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wilton Library\, is for teens\, parents\, grandparents and other members of the community to have the opportunity to hear Cimarelli’s story and benefit from her wisdom.
