SUMMARY:Chasing Childhood Virtual Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force presents a virtual screening of Chasing Childhood\, filmed in Wilton! Stream the movie for free anytime from Saturday\, April 17 through Wednesday\, April 21.\n\n\nChasing Childhood is a film about the unintended consequences of over-protecting\, over-pressuring\, and over-scheduling kids\, and the impact that has on their ability to thrive both in childhood and as adults.\n\n\nThe makers of this movie spent hours in Wilton\, filming in the schools\, on the athletic fields\, and in the homes of residents. Viewers will see familiar scenes from Wilton\, including insightful conversations in our elementary schools. Learn more about how Wilton is leading the way in shifting the culture of childhood and the movement to raise healthy\, resilient children.\n\n\n\n\n\nChasing Childhood Trailer from NYGrit on Vimeo.\n\n \n\n\nChasing Childhood was filmed before the pandemic\, but the issues explored are even more profoundly relevant today: what is the changing landscape of contemporary childhood and parenting? What is best for my kid?\n\n\nIn today’s childhood\, confined by structure\, stranger danger\, and helicopter parenting\, free-play has virtually disappeared. Experts are ringing the alarm bell about the dramatic rise in anxiety and depression in young children and teens. What if all this well-intended hovering\, fear and over-scheduling has backfired?\n\n\nJoin a virtual Q&A with the director and some of the experts and subjects of the film on Thursday\, April 22 at 7 p.m. Q&A panelists include:\n\n\n\nEden Wurmfeld\, Director and Producer of Chasing Childhood\nLenore Skenazy\, President and Founder of Let Grow\nDr. Michael Hynes\, Superintendent of Schools\, Port Washington\, NY\nGenevieve Eason\, Executive Director of Wilton Youth Council\nSavannah Eason\, Wilton High School ‘13\n\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Vicki Abeles\, the director and producer of Race to Nowhere and Beyond Measure.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:MOVIE SCREENING: "Like" – The Impact of Social Media On Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Join a coalition of child development and education organizations for a screening of LIKE\, a new IndieFlix original documentary film that explores the impact of social media on our lives. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content.\n\n\nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening?\n\n\nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it.\n\n\nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain\, on our lives and on our civilization\, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.\n\n\nThe goal of the documentary film LIKE is “to inspire people of all ages\, especially kids\, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.”\n\n \n\n\nPlease email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n\nSponsored By:  Fusion Academy Fairfield\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton High School PTSA\, Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community.\n\n\nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948.\n\n\nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut.\n\n\nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Beyond Measure: What Counts Can’t Be Counted
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Youth Services invite Wilton residents to a special three-part series to explore the purpose of education\, the importance of childhood and our community’s opportunity to chart the best course for our children.\n\n\nThe series began in November with a screening of Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture. It continues on Monday\, Feb. 4 with a screening of the follow-up movie\, Beyond Measure. We conclude with a Community Conversation on Monday\, Feb. 25.\n\n\nEvery day we hear stories about America’s troubled education system\, and that in order to fix what’s broken\, we need to narrow curricula\, standardize classrooms\, and find new ways to measure students and teachers. But what if these “fixes” are making our schools worse? Beyond Measure offers a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change.\n\n\nJoin us for 80-minute film followed by a brief panel discussion. This is a free event\, open to adults and students from middle school up.\n\n\nThe documentary film Beyond Measure visits public schools across the country that put research and innovative models into practice. These groundbreaking communities are transforming what and how they teach\, and creating more equitable\, empowering and student-centered cultures from the ground up.\n\n \n\n\nFrom the makers of Race to Nowhere\, Beyond Measure and the companion book of the same name offer a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change.\n\n\nThere are two opportunities to participate–a morning screening and an evening screening! Both screenings will be held at Middlebrook School Auditorium. Register here:\n\n\n10 a.m. Screening\n\n\n7 p.m. Screening\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
