SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community.\n\n\nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948.\n\n\nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut.\n\n\nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Beyond Measure: What Counts Can’t Be Counted
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Youth Services invite Wilton residents to a special three-part series to explore the purpose of education\, the importance of childhood and our community’s opportunity to chart the best course for our children.\n\n\nThe series began in November with a screening of Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture. It continues on Monday\, Feb. 4 with a screening of the follow-up movie\, Beyond Measure. We conclude with a Community Conversation on Monday\, Feb. 25.\n\n\nEvery day we hear stories about America’s troubled education system\, and that in order to fix what’s broken\, we need to narrow curricula\, standardize classrooms\, and find new ways to measure students and teachers. But what if these “fixes” are making our schools worse? Beyond Measure offers a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change.\n\n\nJoin us for 80-minute film followed by a brief panel discussion. This is a free event\, open to adults and students from middle school up.\n\n\nThe documentary film Beyond Measure visits public schools across the country that put research and innovative models into practice. These groundbreaking communities are transforming what and how they teach\, and creating more equitable\, empowering and student-centered cultures from the ground up.\n\n \n\n\nFrom the makers of Race to Nowhere\, Beyond Measure and the companion book of the same name offer a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change.\n\n\nThere are two opportunities to participate–a morning screening and an evening screening! Both screenings will be held at Middlebrook School Auditorium. Register here:\n\n\n10 a.m. Screening\n\n\n7 p.m. Screening\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Parenting Talk: Children Do Well When They Can–Identifying & Solving Problems That Cause Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Parent presentation by Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, author of The Explosive Child; Lost at School; and Raising Human Beings\n\n\nChildren do well when they can; when they can’t\, it is because of lagging skills and unsolved problems. All children have times when they struggle to handle life’s expectations. Whether a child responds by whining\, sulking\, or crying\, or in ways that are more concerning–hitting\, swearing\, or biting–the goal of parents and caregivers is to identify and solve the underlying problems that cause the behavior.\n\n\nJoin organizers to learn from child psychologist Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, how to understand children’s challenging episodes\, identify unsolved problems and begin to solve problems. Dr. Greene is the originator of the innovative\, empirically-supported approach to children’s behavioral challenges known as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions.\n\n\nIn the 2018-2019 school year\, the Wilton Public Schools will be learning more about Dr. Greene’s model. The district has worked with Dr. Greene to create a plan to help teachers\, faculty\, administration\, staff\, and parents learn how to help students with effective self-regulation and problem-solving strategies. This will begin with keynote addresses for elementary\, middle and high school faculty on Oct. 8\, which is a professional development day for district staff. In addition to working with faculty\, Dr. Greene will also present to parents and other concerned adults to share this model with our community.\n\n\nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n \n\n\nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:College Frenzy: How to Manage and Minimize the Stress
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and discussion for students and parents led by Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, Clinical Psychologist\, Parent Coach and Victoria Hirsch\, College Consultant\n\n\nThe College Process has come to be viewed as “THE BIG EVENT” in the lives of students and their families. The pressure associated with THE BIG EVENT often creates a lot of negative fallout\, such as ruptured relationships and high levels of stress and anxiety. In this presentation\, parent coach and clinical psychologist Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD and college consultant Victoria Hirsch will offer tips\, strategies and suggestions for viewing the college process as a natural next step rather than THE BIG EVENT and for managing the process in ways that foster resilience and relationships rather than discord and despair.\n\n\nThis presentation is aimed at students and parents of students who are preparing for and/or actively applying to college. If you (or your child) are not yet in high school we suggest you relax and think about other things this year. That being said\, all students\, parents and other interested parties are welcome to attend.\n\n\nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n\nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton High School Counseling\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
