SUMMARY:Executive Function Skills Your Teens Need Before Graduating from High School
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Murphy\, PhD\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, on Wednesday\, Mar. 30\, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Zoom for a discussion on the executive function skills your teens need to learn before graduating from high school and how you can assist them in developing and implementing helpful strategies.\n\n\nWe use executive function skills every day to study\, work\, manage the ins and outs of daily life\, and become independent learners. These vital mental skills — the “management system of the brain” — include working memory\, cognitive flexibility\, and impulse control and are responsible for skills like paying attention\, organizing\, planning\, and prioritizing.\n\n\nHaving trouble with EF skills is common\, both for typical learners and for those who think and learn differently. A teen can struggle with EF skills even without a formal diagnosis of a learning disability or ADHD. In addition\, everyone with ADHD has EF difficulties and most students with other learning challenges also struggle with them. It doesn’t mean these kids are lazy or not intelligent. What it does mean\, however\, is that these kids need specific help acquiring and mastering EF skills and strategies.\n\n\nResearch shows that college students with EF challenges experience substantial academic and social-emotional difficulties throughout their college years.\n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET Wilton in partnership with Wilton Youth Council\, Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library\, and Newtown Sped PTA.\n\n \n\n\nTo register\, visit this website.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Drinking\, Smoking\, Vaping: Trends in Teen Use and What Parents Can Do
DESCRIPTION:What exactly is “normal” when it comes to adolescent “experimentation” with alcohol\, vaping and other risky behaviors? Parents may not be aware that affluence is a risk factor for teens’ exposure to and use of alcohol\, tobacco\, cannabis and liquid nicotine (vaping) and that many high achieving teens are secretly engaged in these behaviors. In this workshop\, Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen\, CADC\, Director of Insight Counseling\, will help parents understand the current trends in teen behaviors as well as the possible unique risk factors for these behaviors that parents can minimize or eliminate. Parents will also learn simple and effective ways to set and maintain reasonable limits and expectations for their child’s safety and social life. Finally\, parents will have ample time to ask questions about their specific concerns. Join the Wilton community on Tuesday\, November 9 10:00am at the Wilton Library for this positive event supporting the well-being of our adolescents.\n\n\nThis program will also address the unique risk factors and considerations for the prevention of substance use for teens with learning disabilities and other special needs. We will cover teens with ADHD and other disabilities which may pose significant challenges to parents setting and maintaining safe boundaries and helping teens navigate social life.\n\n\nThis program is appropriate for parents of students in grades 6th to 12th. All interested adults are welcome to attend.\n\n\nThis program will be repeated on Zoom at 7:00 pm on November 9.\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Youth Council in partnership with Wilton Library and SPED*NET Wilton.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:The College Process: How to Cope with Uncertainty and Support Your Teen
DESCRIPTION:Uncertainty is but one of the many challenges that naturally accompany the college process. Yet the pressure associated with attempts to reduce and/or eliminate uncertainty often account for an inordinate amount of the stress. Add an ongoing pandemic\, with its own high levels of uncertainty\, and you’ve got a stressful challenge on steroids! But stress doesn’t have to run and/or define the show. This talk will show you how to shift away from trying to eliminate the uncertainty and toward coping with it.\n\n\nJoin clinical psychologist and parenting coach\, Susan Bauerfeld\, Ph.D.\, for an interactive discussion. Following an overview of how and why worry’s goals of eliminating uncertainty and discomfort actually backfire\, Bauerfeld will provide concrete strategies for coping with uncertainty that can lower the stress level for both you and your teen as you navigate the college process together.\n\n\nThe presentation is appropriate for parents of 10th through 12th-grade students.\n\n\nWe hope to make a recording of this presentation available. More information to come.\n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Youth Council in partnership with Wilton Library and SPED*NET Wilton.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Wilton's Big Block Party Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In a renewed effort to strengthen neighborhood connections\, create opportunities for face-to-face conversation and play for all ages\, Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force is thrilled to be able to again promote Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend. The theme this year is “Building community one block at a time.”\n\n\nThis third annual town-wide initiative will be Friday\, June 4\, Saturday\, June 5\, and Sunday\, June 6\, 2021 (with another weekend Friday\, September 17\, and Saturday\, September 19)\, with each road or neighborhood choosing its own day and time. There are no hard and fast rules for the events\, but people are encouraged to think simple and keep it “old-fashioned.”\n\n\nInformation for residents who would like to participate:\n\n\nWYC’s Big Block Party Weekend is an initiative aimed at connecting neighbors for face-to-face interaction and creating more opportunities for children’s free play. In an effort to bring Wilton families together\, WYC has inspired neighbors all over town to organize old-fashioned block parties during Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekends.\n\n\nWhy have a block party? The benefits are endless! Here are the top reasons:\n\n \n\n\n\nWelcome all of our new neighbors to Wilton\, as well as connect with those we’ve known for longer.\nIncrease a sense of belonging in the community\nGet outside\, make friends and have fun – no excuses are needed to celebrate\nFind neighborhood playmates for your children\nOpportunity for face-to-face connection and conversation\nMeet some of the long-standing neighbors and learn about your community history\nDecrease stress of snow days\, storms\, and emergency situations\nCreate a neighborhood contact list\n\nHow to have a block party? Be a Block Party Captain! Here are some helpful tips:\n\n\n\nKeep it simple and low-key (try not to go overboard\, it can make people feel the event is too much work)\nRecruit another neighbor or 2 to help.\nDecide on a location (road\, common space\, or yard).\nDecide what day and time work best for your neighborhood.\nDecide on the type of event – picnic\, barbecue\, potluck\, etc.\nEstablish block boundaries (use natural neighborhood boundaries where possible) to include approximately 20-30 houses. Remember those on adjacent busier roads.\nHave a child create the flyer to put in mailboxes.\nDistribute the flyer in all invited mailboxes — children love to do this task!\nRemember\, keep it simple. Think old-fashioned block parties.\nFinally\, be sure to follow any state and CDC guidelines\n\nWe suggest making a flyer to put in 20-30 mailboxes of neighbors (especially helpful if you don’t know your neighbors) Tips for your flyer:\n\n\n\nShare some of the reasons to have a block party (see above).\nSolicit opinions on how to handle the food.\nSuggest possible dates and times for the event.\nUse the flyer to encourage attendance.\nInclude your contact information so your neighbors can email or call you if they would like to help. Most participating neighborhoods have had two or three residents offer to help.\n\nNote Regarding Road Closures:\n\n\nWilton Police discourage residents from officially closing their roads – emergency vehicles need to be able to pass. Permits for road closures will only be considered for dead-end roads. To obtain such a permit\, signatures are required from all residents\, plus various town departments. Instead\, some neighborhoods have decided to have their block party in someone’s yard\, at the end of a driveway\, or on the side of their road without obstructing traffic. Experienced block party planners suggest using a combination of balloons\, signs that read “Caution Block Party in Progress\,” and orange cones to alert drivers to the party in progress.\n\n\nBlock Party Survival Checklist:\n\n\n\nSignage for oncoming cars\nName tags (consider including name\, address\, how long you’ve lived here)\nSign-in sheet (names\, kids’ ages\, address\, phone number\, email address and if your child babysits)\nBug spray and/or citronella candles\nFirst Aid kit\nMusic player\nGarbage bags and recycle bin\nPlates\, napkins\, plastic/silverware\, cups\nPaper towels/wet wipes for cleanup\nCoolers or beverage containers with plenty of ice — don’t forget a bottle opener\nCommunity table(s) for food/drinks and tablecloth(s)\nSunscreen\nHand sanitizer or wipes\nOutdoor games – i.e. Cornhole\, Giant Jenga\, sack races\, egg toss\nFlashlights\, headlamps\, or glow necklaces for children after dark\nConsider hiring a lifeguard\, if children will be near a pool\n\nOn Facebook\, visit “Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend.”  Organizers are asking residents to share their plans by commenting on the pinned post at the top of the page. For more information or questions\, please email wiltonsbigblockpartyweekend@gmail.com.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD Book Club (6th-12th Grade)
DESCRIPTION:4Wilton Youth Council\, Kim Zemo LCSW\, and Vanessa Elias Certified Parent Coach will host a Zoom book club to discuss Dr. Eli R. Lebowitz’s groundbreaking book and ways parents and caregivers can help alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s symptoms.\n\n\nBreaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents by Eli R. Lebowitz\, PhD is the first and only book to provide a completely parent-based treatment program for child and adolescent anxiety.  Parents will learn how to alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s behavior. SUMMARY:Healthy Connections: An Inside Scoop on Adolescents and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:New experiences and relationships are essential for helping our tweens\, teens and young adults develop appropriately and reach their full potential. As parents\, we may be concerned that our kids are changing too quickly – or that their panoply of experiences will be harmful\, especially when they involve alcohol and drugs.\n\n\nIn this presentation and conversation\, Anthony Nave\, LCSW\, will explain: how our adolescents’ social\, emotional and brain development can increase their risk for substance abuse/use disorders; what signs of struggle to look out for; how to start a conversation about drugs and alcohol; and what resources are available\, if further help is needed. Nave will also discuss misconceptions surrounding addiction and the contemporary “medical model” of addiction.\n\n\nNave\, a licensed clinical social worker with master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Clinical Social Work\, serves as Senior Manager\, Outpatient Services\, at Mountainside Treatment Center. He is advanced certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)\, is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training\, and is experienced in medication-assisted treatment\, co-occurring disorders\, and adolescent programming. Prior to joining Mountainside\, he taught in an alternative therapeutic school\, where he helped youth with mental health and cognitive disorders. At Mountainside\, Nave designs curricula for clinical programming and incorporates neurobiology and a trauma-responsive framework into one-on-one counseling\, group therapy\, family sessions\, and supervision. At home\, he enjoys pretending to be superheroes with his sons and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:In Search of Greatness
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force\, Wilton Soccer Association\, and Trackside Teen Center for a virtual screening of In Search of Greatness\, which presents an inside look at the journeys and perspectives of some of the world’s greatest athletes (Wayne Gretzky\, Jerry Rice\, Pele and more) followed by an exclusive (just for us!) Facebook Live chat with the filmmaker\, Gabe Polsky!\n\n\n“This documentary is a riveting\, perceptive look at how a champion goes beyond good to become great.
