SUMMARY:WHS Presents "Newsies"
DESCRIPTION:The Clune Center Auditorium will soon be flooded with newspapers\, suspenders\, song\, and dance as Wilton High School proudly presents Disney’s Newsies. The students and production team alike have been hard at work since February to create this electrifying production\, which pulses with excitement as a group of newsboys strike to be reasonably compensated for their daily labor. High energy dancing and feel-good songs by legendary composer Alan Menken offer toe-tapping delight as they guide the audience through this thrilling narrative.\n\n\nThe story is based on the real life newsies strike of 1899. It centers around charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly (Jack Parrotta) and his new friends\, siblings Davey (Ryan Lynn) and Les (Blake Baumel). After the conniving publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Brycen Addison) raises the price of newspapers for personal profit\, the newsboys refuse to enable his scheme. Jack Kelly\, aided by Davey’s smarts\, passionately leads the newsboys through a strike against the underhanded Pulitzer. Along the way\, romance ensues as Jack meets Katherine Plumber (Sarah Bates)\, a determined yet unknown young journalist who seizes the opportunity to finally cover a compelling story.\n\n\n“Audiences can expect to be wowed by the extraordinary talent Wilton High School has to offer\,” says director Meredith Walker. The production staff\, Walker and the students have worked diligently to ensure that the production provides audiences with a gripping portrayal of an inspiring tale. \n\n\nPerformances are in the Clune Center Auditorium on Friday\, May 17 at 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, May 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday\, May 19 at 4 p.m..  Tickets are $15 each at lunch waves for students\, $16.50 online and at the door one hour prior to each show; cash and check only. \n\n\nTickets and information can be found online.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Welcome the holiday season with Wilton Dance Studio's "The Nutcracker"
DESCRIPTION:What makes the holiday season special? Cherished traditions\, music and festive decorations set the stage and Wilton Dance Studio’s 21st annual production of The Nutcracker ballet has them all. This year’s performance is back to delight all ages on Sunday\, Dec. 9 and features more than 50 dancers from Wilton. New and extra special this year are a meet-and-greet with dancers and a toy drive for Person-to-Person to share the joy of the season with those in need.\n\n\nThe full-scale production with lavish sets and costumes includes more than 80 students and adults from seven area towns. The ballet will be performed on Sunday\, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Wilton High School’s Clune Center for the Performing Arts.\n\n\n“Each year\, parents tell me their young children who come to the show fall in love with our special ballet and want to start dancing\,” said Creative Director and Owner of the Wilton Dance Studio Brenda Froehlich. “Many of our older dancers shared this happy experience when they were younger and carry that magic with them on the stage each year. This year\, to inspire those young dancers\, we’re adding a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity immediately following our 1:00 pm show. We welcome audience members to come say hello to their favorite dancers and see our beautiful costumes up close.”\n\n\nA fun part of the Nutcracker ballet story involves the handing out of gifts to children at a festive party. Unfortunately\, many families in our area can’t afford that luxury\, so the Wilton Dance Studio was inspired to host a toy drive at both performances this year. Audience members are encouraged to drop off a new\, unwrapped toy to be shared with a child in need. All toys will go to the local organization Person-to-Person. Kim Collibee of Person-to-Person said\, “We are expecting to serve more children than ever this year\, so the more toys we can get the better.”\n\n\nWilton Dance Studio’s Nutcracker is designed to suit to audiences of all ages while also challenging its dance students\, who change roles and learn more complex choreography each year. The performance length is manageable for young children and does not require an intermission. The ballet follows the traditional story of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King\, with music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Professional sets and elegant costumes complete the high-quality production.\n\n \n\n\nTo buy tickets\, call 203.544.9007 and leave a message or order at www.wiltondance.com\, click on “Nutcracker Performances” download & print the ticket order form. Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the show.\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Donner Photographic\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Parenting Talk: Children Do Well When They Can–Identifying & Solving Problems That Cause Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Parent presentation by Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, author of The Explosive Child; Lost at School; and Raising Human Beings\n\n\nChildren do well when they can; when they can’t\, it is because of lagging skills and unsolved problems. All children have times when they struggle to handle life’s expectations. Whether a child responds by whining\, sulking\, or crying\, or in ways that are more concerning–hitting\, swearing\, or biting–the goal of parents and caregivers is to identify and solve the underlying problems that cause the behavior.\n\n\nJoin organizers to learn from child psychologist Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, how to understand children’s challenging episodes\, identify unsolved problems and begin to solve problems. Dr. Greene is the originator of the innovative\, empirically-supported approach to children’s behavioral challenges known as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions.\n\n\nIn the 2018-2019 school year\, the Wilton Public Schools will be learning more about Dr. Greene’s model. The district has worked with Dr. Greene to create a plan to help teachers\, faculty\, administration\, staff\, and parents learn how to help students with effective self-regulation and problem-solving strategies. This will begin with keynote addresses for elementary\, middle and high school faculty on Oct. 8\, which is a professional development day for district staff. In addition to working with faculty\, Dr. Greene will also present to parents and other concerned adults to share this model with our community.\n\n\nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n \n\n\nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:College Frenzy: How to Manage and Minimize the Stress
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and discussion for students and parents led by Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, Clinical Psychologist\, Parent Coach and Victoria Hirsch\, College Consultant\n\n\nThe College Process has come to be viewed as “THE BIG EVENT” in the lives of students and their families. The pressure associated with THE BIG EVENT often creates a lot of negative fallout\, such as ruptured relationships and high levels of stress and anxiety. In this presentation\, parent coach and clinical psychologist Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD and college consultant Victoria Hirsch will offer tips\, strategies and suggestions for viewing the college process as a natural next step rather than THE BIG EVENT and for managing the process in ways that foster resilience and relationships rather than discord and despair.\n\n\nThis presentation is aimed at students and parents of students who are preparing for and/or actively applying to college. If you (or your child) are not yet in high school we suggest you relax and think about other things this year. That being said\, all students\, parents and other interested parties are welcome to attend.\n\n\nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n\nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton High School Counseling\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
