DESCRIPTION:As they graciously do each year\, the Wilton Memorial Day Parade Committee invites all Wilton families and guests to the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on Monday\, May 27\, following the parade.\n\n\nThe Memorial Service will begin with opening remarks from Parade Committee Chairman Jim Newton\, followed by the National Anthem played by the WHS Band.\n\n\nIf inclement weather forces cancellation of the parade\, the remembrance ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Wilton Congregational Church (70 Ridgefield Rd.). DESCRIPTION:The Drum Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has created a beautiful contemplative Never Forget Garden\, at Hillside Cemetery (165 Ridgefield Rd.)\, as part of the national recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.\n\n\nThe effort is in reverent tribute to veterans\, active military\, first responders and their families\, now and for all time.\n\n\nResidents are invited to the ribbon cutting for the garden\, which will take place immediately following the Hillside Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony at the conclusion of Wilton’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday\, May 30.\n\n\nThe Memorial Day Ceremony at Hillside Cemetery will start at about 11 a.m. with the firing of a replica of a Civil War cannon. The ceremonies will end at about noon with the playing of taps and the raising of the flag to full staff.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

We will convene at Hillside Cemetery with the American Legion Post 86 for our Patriots’ Day Celebration. There will be opening remarks on the significance of Patriots’ Day; an Honor Guard from American Legion Post\, James B. Whipple Post 86; Reading of the names of 43 Patriots located in three cemeteries: Hillside\, Comstock Hill\, and Sharp Hill. We will place flags at the gravesites of each Patriot and light luminaries to honor them all. Refreshments will be served.\n\n\nPatriots’ Day\, the third Monday in the Month of April commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, also known as the “shots heard round the world.” Massachusetts observes Patriots’ Day with the running of the Boston Marathon. Other states observing Patriots’ Day include Maine\, Wisconsin\, Connecticut (2018)\, North Dakota (2019)\, and Florida. As America leads up to her 250th birthday in 2026\, Drum Hill DAR is launching a Patriots’ Day Initiative. We have many fun and some solemn activities planned. SUMMARY:Champions of Change: Women's History Month Cemetery Walk
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Women’s History Month\, Hillside Cemetery has created a self-guided walking tour highlighting notable women of Wilton. With this new annual tradition\, Hillside recognizes local women and their significant contributions to Wilton and beyond. You will meet a patriot\, abolitionist\, suffragette\, community activist\, Justice of the Peace\, and journalist. On future tours\, artists\, writers\, educators\, entrepreneurs\, and others will be featured. We have so many special women to celebrate here at Hillside!\n\n\nThe walk is both educational and inspirational. Meeting these special women reminds us that within each of us is the power to help make our community the place we want it to be now and in the future.\n\n\nWhile some of the women buried at Hillside were once legendary public figures\, others may only have been known and missed by a few family members. Hillside is an important place to realize the value of one’s own life by understanding that someone in the future may stand in the exact same place where you are standing today.\n\n\nSee here for the brochure and map. DESCRIPTION:The popular tour of Hillside Cemetery in Wilton returns\, with new additions! On Saturday\, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.\, spend an hour with historian Bob Russell\, as he shares his extensive knowledge about the many remarkable citizens who have found their final resting place there. The hour-long guided walk includes a brief history of the historic cemetery and the notable people buried there\, including Revolutionary and Civil War veterans plus familiar names such as Olmstead\, Middlebrook and Comstock\, dating back to the 1800s. DESCRIPTION:Former first selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell will lead a walking tour of Hillside Cemetery on Saturday\, June 30 at 11 a.m.. He will give a brief history of Hillside and discuss notable people buried there.\n\n\nThe cemetery has been in existence for 200 years and has a rich history. A number of Revolutionary War veterans and Civil War veterans are buried in the oldest section. Other established Wilton family names dating back to the early 1900’s–like Olmsted\, Middlebrook and Comstock–are easily recognized. And\, of course\, Hillside Cemetery remains the destination of the annual Memorial Day Parade\, where ceremonies are held each May at a monument dedicated to 10 Wilton men who died in World War II.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
