DESCRIPTION:Merwin Meadows will be opening for the summer season on Saturday\, May 28. Wilton residents are invited all weekend for an open house weekend to enjoy all that Merwin Meadows has to offer — swimming pond\, beach\, picnic tables and grills\, bathhouse\, and playground. (The Women’s Room at the park is under renovation but is still usable.) Park passes will not be required for residents over the holiday weekend.\n\n\nOn Memorial Day\, Wilton Parks and Recreation will be serving hot dogs at Merwin Meadows after the parade.\n\n\nPark hours are sunrise to sunset. DESCRIPTION:Last year’s Family Day Free Concert won rave reviews from everyone who attended. Now\, the Wilton-based CT Friends of the Performing Arts is bringing it back for the 2nd Annual Family Day Free Concert in Merwin Meadows on Sunday\, Sept. 8.\n\n\nGates open at 4 p.m.\, and at 4:30 p.m. the first musicians–the Paul Green School of Rock—will play\, followed at 5 p.m. by Paul Simon‘s bassist\, Bakithi Kumalo\, and Jay & Ray\, a local children and family music duo (with concert organizer Ray Bryant).\n\n\nAt 6 p.m. headliner Pete Francis takes the stage. Francis is a songwriter\, producer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1995\, he founded the band Dispatch\, who became the first ever independent band to sell out Madison Square Garden. They went on to tour through other major venues across the country\, including Red Rocks\, TD Garden\, and The Greek Theaters in both San Francisco and LA. DESCRIPTION:Wilton Parks and Recreation is putting on a free movie night for Wilton residents on Friday\, Sept. 28\, with a showing of Disney/Pixar’s Coco. The movie will run from 7:15-9 p.m. at Merwin Meadows Park. Free popcorn will be given out on a first come\, first serve basis until it runs out.\n\n\n*The event location has been changed to the Cider Mill School Gym.\nBring a non-alcoholic beverage and any picnic items you may want with your chair or blankets and enjoy the outdoor movie experience. SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas.\n\n\nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India.\n\n\nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child.\n\n\nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students.\n\n\nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society.\n\n \n\n\nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. DESCRIPTION:Not only is Wilton home to a new non-profit organization to promote the performing arts\, but the town will also play host to the group’s first annual Family Day Free Concert\, on Sunday\, Aug. 26\, at Merwin Meadows.\n\n\nEven more exciting? Headlining the concert is Bakithi Kumalo\, who plays bass for Paul Simon. On Saturday\, June 16\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Parks & Rec is hosting “Wilton Day at Merwin Meadows” and all residents are invited for free fun and festivities. With proof of Wilton residency\, attendees will be able to enjoy free food and activities for all ages. Among the fun events and features will be face painting\, music\, corn hole\, beach volleyball\, inflatables (duel-sport combo bounce house\, climbing area and slide)\, sack races\, fencing demonstrations\, playground and swings\, and of course swimming in the Merwin pond.
