SUMMARY:Wilton Household HazWaste Collection Day
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, October 16\, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Road). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products.\n\n\nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive\, or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. For information on what items can and cannot be accepted\, please visit here.\n\n\nThe collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston\, and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. For more information\, contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs at (203) 563-0180.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Wilton to Hold Drive-through Seasonal Flu Vaccination Clinic For Wilton Residents Only
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Health Department\, in conjunction with the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County\, will be holding a Seasonal Flu Vaccination Clinic this year on Saturday\, Oct. 10 and Sunday\, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Those wishing to receive a flu vaccine must register in advance and schedule an appointment.\n\n\nInfluenza (Flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses\, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Because some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar\, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone\, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis according to CDC.\n\n\nWhile it’s not possible to say with certainty what will happen in the fall and winter\, CDC believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be spreading. In this context\, getting a flu vaccine will be more important than ever.\n\n\nThis year\, the flu vaccine clinic will be held outdoors as a drive-through clinic at Miller Driscoll School. Due to COVID considerations\, a drive-through clinic along with appointment times will help maintain social distancing and eliminate the need for disinfecting the school building afterward. Masks will still be required\, and safety precautions will be in place to promote a safe and healthy environment for everyone. No walk-ups will be allowed\, only those driving through with an appointment will receive a vaccination.\n\n\nThe flu vaccine clinic entrance will be from the Belden Hill Rd. side of the school and all vehicles will exit onto Wolfpit Road. You may experience some minor traffic delays in that area on those days\, and residents not receiving a flu vaccination are encouraged to seek alternate routes. For safety reasons\, access to school grounds will be restricted to vaccinations only on those days.\n\n \n\n\nAll residents are encouraged to get a flu vaccine this year\, especially with the prevalence of COVID-19. Seasonal flu and COVID-19 symptoms may appear similar\, though they may affect the body differently. Receiving a flu vaccine will help reduce your risk of contracting the flu this season\, and also reduce the strain on hospitals and medical systems which continue to treat COVID-19 patients.\n\n\nFor the upcoming flu season\, flu vaccination will be very important to reduce flu occurrence because it can help reduce the overall impact of respiratory illnesses on the population and thus lessen the resulting burden on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic.\n\n\nA flu vaccine may also provide several individual health benefits\, including keeping you from getting sick with flu\, reducing the severity of your illness if you do get flu\, and reducing your risk of a flu-associated hospitalization.\n\n\nResidents of Wilton are encouraged to make a seasonal flu vaccination appointment by visiting the registration page early. You will need to download the form\, fill it out\, and bring it with you to your appointment. Some forms of insurance\, including Medicare will be accepted along with a self-pay option. At this time\, only adult dosage and high- dose vaccines are available. For children’s vaccines\, we recommend contacting your pediatrician.\n\n\nVaccination of people at high risk for flu complications is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness. Many people at higher risk from flu also seem to be at higher risk from COVID-19. If you are at high risk\, it is especially important for you to get a flu vaccine this year.\n\n\nIt is possible to have flu\, as well as other respiratory illnesses and COVID-19 at the same time according to the CDC. Getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19\, however\, flu vaccination has many other important benefits. Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness\, hospitalization\, and death.\n\n\nGetting a flu vaccine this fall will be more important than ever\, not only to reduce your risk from flu but also to help conserve potentially scarce health care resources. During the COVID- 19 pandemic\, reducing the overall burden of respiratory illnesses is important to protect vulnerable populations at risk for severe illness\, reduce the strain on healthcare systems\, and maintain other critical services and infrastructure.\n\n\nThe Town of Wilton and the Wilton Health Department remain committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all Wilton residents.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Food Truck Festival–Trackside Teen Center Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Wilton will feed its collective belly\, as Trackside Teen Center will feed its financial need\, all with the 2nd Annual Wilton Food Truck Festival\, scheduled for Saturday\, Aug. 17. The community event has quickly become one of the organizations largest fundraisers\, something organizers say is especially needed to help with center’s financial challenges and a severe budget deficit.\n\n\nUp to 20 food trucks will return to Miller-Driscoll School on Aug. 17 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; in addition to a wide variety of meals on wheels\, the event will feature local musicians\, kid friendly entertainment and over a dozen vendors to delight and entertain attendees throughout the day.\n\n\nEntry is $10 per car.\n\n\nTrackside Teen Center\, as a private non-profit\, is the uniquely valuable place for Wilton teens. The center provides free drop-in hours after school and runs a number of programs ranging from arts to improv\, gaming to self-esteem development for pre- teens and teens in grades 6–12. As a safe place that is not home\, and not school\, organization official call Trackside the ‘in-between’–where pre-teens and teens can come to socialize\, explore new interests\, meet new friends and most importantly just be themselves in a supervised environment.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Introduction to Playwork with Morgan Leichter-Saxby of Pop-Up Adventure Play
DESCRIPTION:Two Professional Development Workshops Offered\nAll professionals and policy makers who work with or on behalf of children are invited.\n\n\n9-11 a.m. at Miller Driscoll Elementary School\n\n\n12:30-2:30 p.m. at Cider Mill School\n\n\nTo RSVP\, email Colleen Fawcett of Wilton Youth Services by April 11.\n\n\nPlay is essential to children’s development and well-being–but providing time\, space and materials can be a struggle! In this session\, we’ll examine Playwork\, a UK-based professional approach to supporting children’s play. We will explore key vocabulary and theories on the processes of play (including common points of friction) and look at material and social environments which can encourage collaborative\, inclusive and satisfying experiences for all. We’ll reflect upon our own responses to children’s needs and interests\, including specific ways to know when to step back and ways to step in. Through leading research and stories of frontline practice\, we’ll also look at ways to think about our sites in both the short and long-term\, and work together to build stronger and more cohesive staff teams.\n\n \n\n\nSponsored by Wilton Youth Services and Wilton Youth Council‘s Free Play Matters Task Force.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Annual Household HazWaste Collection Event–TOWN of WILTON
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 13. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products.\n\n\nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner.\n\n\nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include:\n\n\nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid\n\n\nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only.
