SUMMARY:Special Civil Rights Shabbat
DESCRIPTION:Friday evening promises to be an exceptionally moving Shabbat experience at Temple B’nai Chaim. On January 12 at 7:30 p.m. we will honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, a modern day prophet who called on the shared history of oppression of Jews and African Americans as they sought a promised land. We share both a history of oppression and a responsibility to speak truth to power. Dr. King taught us all to pray with our feet as well as our mouths.\n\n\nThis will be an Interfaith service as Cantor Dunkerley welcomes the Rev. Caroline Ainsworth-Hughes of the Wilton Congregational Church to join her on the Bimah. Bonnie Heft who coordinates TBC’s Social Action Group to Fight Antisemitism and Hate has sponsored the music. Members of The Ridgefield Chorale will sing both Jewish melodies as well as the music they performed recently at the Kennedy Center honoring the 60th Anniversary of Dr. King’s I Have A Dream speech. DESCRIPTION:The Social Action Committee at Temple B’nai Chaim is collecting diapers\, wipes\, and menstrual supplies for distribution to The Community Action Agency of Western CT\, Person to Person\, and the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. If enough items are donated The Diaper Bank of CT will be contacted about donating to other organizations in the area. Collection will be in the parking lot. Open packages are accepted. All sizes are welcome\, but generally\, sizes 3 and up are most in need. Lack of these supplies causes incredible amounts of stress on the families in need. Lack of menstrual supplies prevents women from attending school or jobs. These items are needed now in greater supply.
