Their services include:\n\n\n\nHelping students build academic and life skills in middle and high school that will lead to independence\nEncouraging students to access supports/accommodations that will translate easily to a college environment\nBuilding IEPs and 504 plans that will support the development of key college and employment readiness skills\nIncreasing students’ understanding of their individual needs\nStrengthening students’ self-advocacy skills\nInvestigating colleges and universities to find the “right fit”\nObtaining information on technical schools\, community colleges\, and gap year programs and 2-4 year colleges/universities that support students with learning needs\nNavigating a college or university system once enrolled\n\nTheir work focuses on the development of self-advocacy skills\, which are critical for success in college and beyond\, as well as working with higher education staff directly to implement environments that support accessibility and UDL.\n\n\nKelly is a special education advocate in Connecticut and has been supporting children with disabilities and their families for over 12 years. SUMMARY:Wilton Police Host 'Coffee with a Cop' Community Gathering
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, Dec. 18\, officers from the Wilton Police Department and community members will come together in an informal\, neutral space to discuss community issues\, build relationships\, and drink coffee.\n\n\nAll community members are invited to attend “Coffee with a Cop.” The event runs from 8-10 a.m. at Tusk and Cup (142 Old Ridgefield Rd.).\n\n\nCoffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Wilton neighborhoods.\n\n\nThe majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies\, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community\, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed\, one-on-one interaction.\n\n\nCoffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice\, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country\, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.\n\n \n\n\nThe program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
