SUMMARY:WHS Students Produce & Perform "26 Pebbles" Commemorating Sandy Hook Community–POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. WE WILL UPDATE AS SOON AS RESCHEDULING INFORMATION IN AVAILABLE.\n\n\nWilton High School Theater\, in collaboration with the Safe School Climate Committee\, brings a special performance of 26 Pebbles to the Little Theater stage on Thursday\, March 19. Student directed by WHS senior Jack Parrotta and overseen by WHS faculty member Kevin Slater\, 26 Pebbles honors the community and memories of Sandy Hook\, CT.\n\n\nActor and playwright Eric Ulloa traveled to Newtown\, CT to conduct interviews with over 60 members of the community five months following the tragedy in 2012. The text from these interviews became the content of 26 Pebbles.\n\n\nThe play provides a unique lens into the aftermath of a tragedy that shook the nation and shattered this nearby small town. The story follows the events that took place in Newtown during the months following the tragedy and the collective struggle of the town’s new reality.\n\n\n“I did my best to remind myself of the place artists inhabit in this world\, how we navigate a path where our talents can be employed not only to help individual healing but also initiate societal change\,” Ulloa said about the process of creating the play.\n\n \n\n\nUltimately\, 26 Pebbles serves as a reminder to the power of connection\, kindness and compassion in the wake of destruction. All proceeds from ticket sales to the Wilton High School performance will be donated to Sandy Hook Promise\, a non-profit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were murdered on Dec. 14\, 2012\, that is committed to creating community programs that engage discussion and awareness of gun violence prevention.\n\n\n“26 Pebbles is about how we\, as a community and society\, react and respond to tragedy. It’s about the ripples caused by trauma and ultimately a story of hope\,”  says Jake Vitarelli\, one of the student performers\, about the production.\n\n\nCast and crew include Sarah Bates\, Lily Casiraghi\, Hunter Driscoll\, Jake Eagan\, Brielle Flavin\, Devin Moran\, Jack Parrotta\, Lauren Parrotta\, Sasha Sypher\, Jake Vitarelli\, Olivia Vitarelli and Eleanor Winrow.\n\n\nThe performance will be held on Thursday\, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilton High School Little Theater. Tickets are $10. All tickets will be sold at the door one hour before. For group information or questions please call 203.762.0381\, ext. 6205.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:MOVIE SCREENING: "Like" – The Impact of Social Media On Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Join a coalition of child development and education organizations for a screening of LIKE\, a new IndieFlix original documentary film that explores the impact of social media on our lives. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content.\n\n\nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening?\n\n\nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it.\n\n\nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain\, on our lives and on our civilization\, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.\n\n\nThe goal of the documentary film LIKE is “to inspire people of all ages\, especially kids\, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.”\n\n \n\n\nPlease email Genevieve Eason with questions.\n\n\nSponsored By:  Fusion Academy Fairfield\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton High School PTSA\, Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:The John Rhodes Jazz Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 43rd year\, the annual John Rhodes Jazz Symposium will be held Friday\, Feb. 22 at Wilton High School in The Little Theater. This event\, an assembly of high school jazz bands from across Fairfield County\, is known and loved for its display of enormous musical talent and rush of crowd-thrilling performances. The symposium is open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome.\n\n\nThe first of the two sessions will start at 3:30 p.m. and run until 6 p.m.; the second session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.. Following the student performances\, Fairfield County’s own Berkshire Jazz Orchestra will take the stage for a special guest performance that will include several Stan Kenton numbers.\n\n\nWilton High School band director Nick Loafman is looking forward to another year of inspiring jazz performances. “There is always so much talent on display at our annual jazz symposium. It is so fun and rewarding to hear so many students from different schools playing this great music\,” he says.\n\n\nParticipating in the symposium this year will be 10 bands from a number of Fairfield County high schools\, including Westhill\, King School\, Bethel\, Norwalk\, McMahon\, Newtown\, and Weston. Wilton High School will feature two of its jazz bands at the event—Jazz I and Jazz II.\n\n\nThe annual symposium is a cherished tradition for local jazz students. It offers them the opportunity to perform on stage as well as to receive critical feedback from an academic panel. “It is always excellent to have student musicians perform for each other in an educationally focused\, non-competitive setting\,” Loafman says. “The students always learn a great deal by performing and listening to each other.”\n\n \n\n\nIn total\, approximately 200 passionate young jazz musicians are expected to assemble for this event to share their talents and bring great entertainment to Wilton. Musical selections will range in style from traditional big band swing to Latin to ballads to contemporary jazz.\n\n\nAlso looking forward to this event is Troy Williams\, Wilton High School’s newest band director. This will be his first year at the symposium. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about this event\,” he says. “I’m excited to hear the other jazz bands coming from near and far.”\n\n\nLoafman and Williams are especially pleased to welcome back to Wilton the Berkshire Jazz Orchestra. This regional jazz group\, organized in 1987\, comprises active performers and educators from all over Fairfield County.\n\n\n“We feel so honored to have these great musicians perform here in Wilton for the students and the community\,” Loafman says. “If you love jazz\, then this will be a real treat.”\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
