No matter\, you will be amazed at what you don’t know about Wilton’s history!\n\n\nThe History is Here Wilton Scavenger Hunt will kick off on Saturday\, Oct. 16. Come to the Wilton Historical Society’s Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest between 2-4 p.m. to register\, pick up your Scavenger Hunt Kit\, and set out to follow the clues to a dozen places around town. This is a great opportunity for family fun\, to get outside\, to explore Wilton and maybe even to win a prize!\n\n\nAs you follow the clues\, the History Is Here Wilton Scavenger Hunt will take you north\, south\, east\, west and in between as you discover places with a surprising past. Learn about war heroes\, sports history\, suffrage\, a sensational murder\, and life in Wilton long ago. Follow the map (can your kids read a map?) to each location. Use your powers of observation to find and scan the QR code there — you will be rewarded with a short video with clues\, historical photos and a fascinating nugget of information about what happened at the very spot where you are standing. Put stickers on the map to mark the places you have found. Do it all in one day\, or over the course of a week. Return to the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday\, Oct. 23 from 3-4 p.m. for doughnuts and cider to celebrate all you have learned. SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society: The Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest will take place on Saturday\, October 16\, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Find a bountiful harvest of all kinds of fall fun with a focus on\, of course\, pumpkins! Watch a blacksmith hard at work at the forge; see docents in Colonial dress hearth cooking with pumpkins\, weaving and flax breaking\, munch a donut\, and sip some cider.\n\n\nThere will be lots of things for kids to do – pumpkin decorating\, lawn games such as “Ring Toss with Pumpkins” and “Corn Hole” – and a version of bocce using pumpkins and gourds. The grounds of the Historical Society will be strewn with pumpkins and gourds being sold by Wilton Kiwanis along with mums and corn.\n\n\nBe sure to register for the “History is Here Wilton Scavenger Hunt” at the sign-up table. Whether you are brand new to town or a resident for 30 years\, you will be amazed at what you don’t know about Wilton’s history. You can pick up your Scavenger Hunt Kit\, and set out to follow the clues to a dozen places around town. This is a great opportunity for family fun\, to get outside\, explore Wilton\, and maybe win a prize. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 1 from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm the Wilton Historical Society Museum Complex will be buzzing with a fun event perfect for kids\, families\, and new residents. The “Fire and Ice” Ice Cream Social is a great way to get into the Fourth of July spirit.\n\n\nDocents in Colonial attire will demonstrate all manner of Colonial activities\, from firing Revolutionary War-style muskets to spinning and blacksmithing. Kids can try their hands at spoke shaving\, weaving\, and flax-breaking. Enjoy the ice cream social courtesy of the Drum Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Captain David Hawley Betts Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Learn about the Verbruggen Cannon\, an exact reproduction of a 1776 artillery also known as a “Grasshopper” and find out how it was loaded and fired.\n\n\nThe Wilton Historical Society will also debut a new exhibition: “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”. The highlight is an extraordinary Revolutionary War document\, a letter dated April 26\, 1777\, between General Selleck Silliman and Major General David Wooster\, which may be the last letter sent by General Wooster before he was killed the next day at the Battle of Ridgefield. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new “History is Here” video by Associate Curator Nick Foster.\n\n\nDrum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a patriot look-up session at the ice cream social. Experienced genealogists will be on hand to help you discover your patriotic roots. You may have an ancestor who assisted in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps your ancestor fought; provided food\, clothing\, shelter; or signed an oath of allegiance. There were many ways to be a Revolutionary War patriot. SUMMARY:Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In April 1777\, war came to Wilton. After burning part of Danbury and destroying Continental Army supplies\, British troops under General William Tryon marched through Wilton on their way back to Westport and their fleet. With a sudden alarm sent throughout Connecticut warning of a British invasion\, many hastily assembled soldiers fought to repel the enemy from their homes. Now open\, the Wilton Historical Society presents “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”\, an exhibition which explores the actions of British\, Patriots\, and civilians involved in the Revolutionary War action known as the Raid on Danbury\, with a particular focus on the march of British troops south down Ridgefield Road through Wilton.\n\n\nWilton resident John Reznikoff\, a historic document expert\, has loaned the highlight of the exhibition – an extraordinary piece of correspondence between Patriot Generals David Wooster and Selleck Silliman. The rare 1777 document\, which may be the last one sent by General Wooster before he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Ridgefield the following day\, is displayed along with other historic artifacts and documents from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society. SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society: May Day Vintage Tea Cup Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:May Day celebrates the onset of spring and dates back to Roman times as a festival of flowers. Maypoles were tied with colorful ribbons and children danced around them. Traditionally\, people would make small baskets of flowers and treats and leave them as a surprise for neighbors or loved ones on their door.\n\n\nOn Saturday\, May 1\, 11:00 – 12:30 the Wilton Historical Society will be offering a May Day Workshop for Kids. Guided by Museum Educator Katherine Karlik\, the kids will tuck a small flowering plant into a vintage teacup and will make a small floral picture on burlap using their fingerprints to create the image as well. Either of these projects will make a heartfelt gift\, perhaps for Mother’s Day. Suggested for ages 6 – 12.\n\n\nTo adhere to safety guidelines\, the workshop is limited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) Decorating Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society to learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky (their name is derived from the Ukrainian verb meaning to write). Expert egg decorator Susan Clark will lead the workshop for adults and children. This ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement a bit like a pen\, filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs between bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design\, or create your own.\n\n\nBecause of COVID restrictions\, the workshop is strictly limited to 15 participants and will follow safety guidelines. The program will take place in the Abbott Barn. Family pods will be seated together.
