DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest will take place on Saturday\, October 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. It’s fun for all ages as with all things pumpkin! Play fall themed lawn games such as pumpkin bowling or pumpkin tic-tac-toe\, or join costumed colonial docents as they cook over an open hearth\, weave on reproduction colonial looms\, or hammer away in the blacksmith’s forge\, all while munching on complimentary cider and donuts.\n\n\nVisitors can also pick up their very own pumpkin to bring home! Browse the pumpkin patch of the Wilton Kiwanis Club on the Society’s front lawn and purchase the perfect one. Then head over to the pumpkin decorating station and put your creativity on display. Kiwanis will also have small gourds and mums on sale to help fill out your personal harvest display.\n\n\nNew this year\, explore and complete a scavenger hunt for hidden items and images scattered across the Society’s grounds!\n\n\nFree for Wilton Historical Society members and $5 per person for non-members. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will use maps and props to talk about the Spice Trade and other global commerce\, in addition to participating in a gourd decorating craft inspired by the artistry of Indigenous Peoples. Each participating group will also receive a participation prize!\n\n\nThis event is made possible by DIG USA. Mornings will be filled with discovery\, learning\, arts & crafts\, and a simple snack inspired by the day’s project. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 30\, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will host a guided tour of its two new exhibitions – The Town Book: E. Boyd Smith’s 20th Century Wilton and Commitment to Community: The Lives of Francis Clerc and Francis Clerc Ogden. The tour\, led by Wilton Historical Society Director Nick Foster\, will offer additional historical details\, behind the scenes information\, and discussions on themes of the exhibitions. How do museums choose objects for an exhibition? Who influenced E. Boyd Smith’s art? What can we learn from working with the deaf community? Visitors can ask questions and share their own connections to the history being explored.\n\n\nThe program includes an approximately 35 to 45 minute guided tour of the two exhibitions with additional time for Q&A.\n\n\nThe fee is $10 for non-member adults and is free for Wilton Historical Society members and children under 18. DESCRIPTION:Wild blueberries have been consumed by Indigenous peoples of New England for thousands of years. Colonial settlers also harvested blueberries\, as they were easily dried and stored for winter\, incorporated into a wide variety of recipes\, and used for medicinal purposes. Today\, the tradition of eating blueberries both on their own and as an ingredient in delicious baked goods remains as popular as ever.\n\n\nOn Saturday\, June 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Colonial Blueberry Lattice Pie baking workshop.  Participants can dress in costume and discuss Colonial manners and customs\, and bake a scrumptious Colonial Blueberry Lattice Pie which will be served with a refreshing pitcher of sweet tea. SUMMARY:Adult Needle Felting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Felt is a type of non-woven fabric that has been fabricated since ancient times in countries around the world and is used to make rugs\, hats\, clothing\, wall art\, blankets\, insulation for boots\, and more. Needle felting uses animal fiber such as sheep wool and special tools to enable fibers to mat together to form a cloth. Crafters today have taken the ancient art of felt making for both artistic and functional purposes.\n\n\nOn Saturday\, June 10\, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Needle Felting Workshop for Adults. Participants will learn needle felting technique to create flat and sculptural pieces that can be used to embellish hats\, scarves and articles of clothing. Program Educator Ellen Goldman will also talk about how this technique can be used to create jewelry\, decorative objects and whimsical figures. DESCRIPTION:Elmer Boyd Smith (1860-1943) was a prominent American painter\, writer and illustrator of children’s books. Born in Saint John\, New Brunswick\, and raised in Boston\, Smith was classically trained as a painter in France. He moved to Wilton during the early 1900s where he found a successful career as an author and illustrator. The images in his books were often inspired by or directly copied from the scenes he saw throughout Wilton.\n\n\nOn Saturday\, June 10\, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Elmer Boyd Smith and Country Landscapes in Watercolor workshop for kids. Participants will view “The Town Book: E. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 19\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold a reception to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions.\n\n\nCommitment to Community: The Lives of Laurent Clerc and Francis Clerc Ogden is developed in partnership with the American School for the Deaf\, and explores the lives of two men\, Laurent Clerc and his great-grandson Francis Clerc Ogden. Clerc\, a co-founder of the American School for the Deaf\, spent his life working to make education accessible for deaf students\, including recruiting other trailblazing educators developing sign language. Ogden\, a Wilton resident for nearly 70 years\, was involved in countless town organizations and projects\, including helping to found the Wilton Historical Society. This exhibit will examine the work both men did in service to others and the fortuitous circumstances that brought two organizations together.\n\n\nThe Town Book: E. Boyd Smith’s 20th Century Wilton takes a deeper look at Wilton during the early 20th century\, a time of radical transformation for the town\, through the work of a resident who witnessed it firsthand\, E. Boyd Smith. Smith was a children’s book author and illustrator\, and along with his wife Mary\, was an active member of the community. Smith’s illustrations were directly inspired by the scenes he saw as he traveled around Wilton\, often including landmarks familiar to his fellow residents. His books capture a lifestyle that was rapidly disappearing and made it accessible to young readers. The exhibition will display Smith’s art alongside objects from the museum’s collection to offer different perspectives on Wilton’s evolution during the first half of the 1900’s. SUMMARY:Colonial Tavern Night
DESCRIPTION:Taverns and inns were an integral part of 18th century Wilton\, serving as restaurants\, bars\, rest stops for weary travelers\, and community centers. These businesses were so vital that for a time\, Connecticut colonial law required several towns to have at least one tavern open. On April 28\, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will celebrate and acknowledge these important historic places by hosting its own tavern at the museum!\n\n\nJust like Wilton’s colonial residents\, guests can help themselves to delicious food and drink\, try their hand at some colonial tabletop games like Shut the Box and Nine Men’s Morris\, listen to traditional folk music\, and explore part of the Society’s c. 1772 Sloan-Raymond-Fitch House\, which operated as a tavern throughout the American Revolution and was nearly burned to the ground by the British 246 years to the day of this event. Guests can also participate in a themed tavern trivia contest and test their knowledge of the 1700’s with a chance to win some reproduction Colonial drinkware.\n\n\nTicket includes open bar of beer and wine with beer provided by Redding Beer Company and food courtesy of Jeff’s BBQ. Hard cider samples will be provided by Farah Masani and Shawn Frend of Wilton Cider House.\n\n\nThis event is for adults 21+ and is generously sponsored by WildBloom Skincare. DESCRIPTION:Dating back to the mid-1800’s\, mercury glass was originally created as a replacement for sterling silver\, yet actually contains neither silver nor mercury. As traditionally practiced\, the process of blowing mercury glasses utilized a double-walled technique which involved pouring silvering solution in between two glass layers. Mercury glass remains a popular material for Christmas ornaments and other decorative household goods. Today\, this art form can be mimicked on glass objects using common household vinegar and a spray can technique.\n\n\nOn Saturday\, April 22\, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\, Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will hold a mercury glass votive workshop at the Wilton Historical Society. SUMMARY:Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop for Adults and Kids
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the Wilton Historical Society on Sunday\, April 2 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky. Expert egg decorator\, Susan Clark\, will lead this workshop for adults and children. The ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs and bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design or create your own!\n\n\nThe program will take place in the Abbott Barn. Family groups will be seated together. The per participant fee is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.  All materials will be provided.\n\n\nRecommended for for adults and children ages 9 and up. Bring just yourself\, bring your friends and bring your parents. All are welcome at this special event!\n\n\nBusch is a native Wiltonian who grew up and raised his family here. A lifelong advocate for social justice\, Bush and his husband\, Stephen Davis\, were one of the seven couples that successfully sued Connecticut for the right to marry. He worked as a public interest attorney and an administrative judge. He is currently the owner of the Wilton business\, Nantucket Spider. In his role as a justice of the peace\, he greatly enjoys marrying other couples.\n\n\nThis event is for LGBTQ+ people and Allies of ALL ages. Registration is a must. DESCRIPTION:The Long Road Toward LGBTQ+ Rights and Equality in the United States – Dr. Kelly Marino\, Sacred Heart University.\n\n\nIn the 16th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series entitled “A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America” will focus on the history of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States beginning in the mid-20th century.\n\n\nKelly Marino\, Ph.D.\, a lecturer in the History Department of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University and Program Director of Women’s Studies\, will discuss the transition from the homophile campaign to the gay liberation movement. She will talk about interconnections with other social and political campaigns in the 1960s and 70s\, the activism and ideology of the movement\, the culture of the sexual revolution\, and the influence of key events such as Stonewall. Her discussion will help to provide context for current events making headlines today.\n\n\nThe moderator is Stephen Hudspeth. A reception will follow the talk. SUMMARY:Weekend Workshops: Basket Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Baskets have been created across the world as both a useful tool and a decorative art for thousands of years. In Wilton\, both Indigenous peoples and colonial settlers used baskets large and small for all sorts of purposes\, including drying herbs\, carrying crops\, and as long-term storage containers. Even into the 20th century\, baskets were used by many of Wilton’s apple farmers during the fall harvest season.\n\n\nWeaving with rattan (also known as reed)\, continues to be a popular practice\, as it is pliable\, organic\, sturdy\, and readily available. On Saturday\, March 18\, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Basket Weaving with Rattan Workshop for kids. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will discuss the construction and uses of baskets over time while participants become absorbed in creating their very own artifacts. A snack of Triscuits and apple juice will be offered. A perfect event for aspiring artisans!\n\n\nSuggested for ages 6-10. The fee is $10 per child for members and $15 per child for non-members. SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America – Dr. Aimee Loiselle
DESCRIPTION:US Women Demand Equity: From Voting Rights to Work Conditions – Dr. Aimee Loiselle\, Central Connecticut State University.\n\n\nIn the 16th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series entitled “A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America” will focus on how women from different backgrounds and regions have pursued equity by different means.\n\n\nDuring this program\, Aimee Loiselle\, an assistant professor at Central Connecticut State University\, will discuss how even the suffrage movement and passage of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the federal right to vote in 1920\, emerged from many tactics heavily shaped by race\, class\, and geography. Its passage fueled more efforts by women\, both to use the vote and to highlight its inadequacy for addressing problems like unfair work conditions and poverty. Middle-class white women\, Black women\, and working-class women had points of collaboration and division throughout the 20th century as they demanded equity on different terms.\n\n\nDr. Loiselle is an award-winning historian. She studies modern US history with an interest in women workers and attention to intersections of gender\, race\, class\, and citizenship.\n\n\nThe moderator is Max Gabrielson. SUMMARY:Weekend Workshop: Paper Making
DESCRIPTION:Paper was not always the cheap and universal product that it is today. Before the Renaissance\, paper in Europe was handmade by specialized artisans and was costly compared to cheaper alternatives like parchment. The craft of handmade paper survives today as a hobby and an art form using traditional paper making materials such as hemp\, linen\, cotton\, and wood pulp. Paper makers use a mold with a wooden frame and wire mesh to create a unique and useful product.\n\n\nThe Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Paper Making Workshop on Saturday\, March 4\, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will discuss paper making and describe various types of papers and their uses. Participants will create their own colorful sheets of paper using a mold and dyes. DESCRIPTION:Maple sugaring was practiced by Indigenous North Americans long before the arrival of European colonists. While some modern tools and methods have been added over the years\, the process of tapping maple trees and boiling the sap into syrup has remained largely unchanged. Today\, maple syrup is a staple product produced in the Northeast United States and Canada.\n\n\nThe freezing and thawing of late winter and early spring provides ideal conditions for extracting sap from maple trees. On Saturday\, February 18\, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold a maple sugaring workshop. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will talk about the maple sugaring process while participants help to prepare their very own tasty snack of maple tarts.
