SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Weekend Workshops — Preparing for Winter
DESCRIPTION:Autumn was a busy time of year in Colonial America\, as families took inventory of their livestock and began the process of storing and preserving food for the long winter ahead. Recently harvested fruits and vegetables were dried\, and others were preserved and put into sealed jars. Fall and summer favorites such as pumpkins\, apples\, pears\, plums\, peaches\, quinces and berries were especially popular. Jams and marmalades were made in large batches\, a time-consuming process but one with delicious results! Strings of fruit were hung out to dry\, creating delightful edible decorations. On Saturday\, Nov. 5\, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own “Preparing for Winter” children’s workshop. Participants will make their own colorful dried fruit necklaces\, and enjoy a snack of home-made preserves on hearth-baked bread\, as they listen to stories of winter in New England told by museum educator Catherine Lipper.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Kids' Weekend Workshop — Paper Doll-Making
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Historical Society is bringing back its regular Saturday kids programs\, now called “Weekend Workshops.” The first program\, a paper doll-making workshop\, will be held on Saturday\, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.\n\n\nPaper dolls have been a common toy for centuries across the globe. Traditionally\, in the United States and Europe\, paper dolls have consisted of figures cut out of paper or thin card stock\, with clothing fashioned out of paper held onto the dolls with paper folding tabs. Mass production of these dolls began in the early 1800s and continued into the 20th century.\n\n\nAccording to the University of Chicago Library\, early paper dolls created in Europe frequently depicted actors or actresses who were used similarly to puppet shows on toy stages. Dressmakers used articulated dolls for a more practical purpose — as miniature models for clothing designs. Wilton Historical holds several paper dolls in its collection\, including one from 1890.\n\n\nThe Wilton Historical Society’s paper doll-making workshop for kids will feature pre-cut paper figures that can be decorated with a variety of paper outfits. The session will be led by museum educator Catherine Lipper\, who will also share her collection of three pristine condition Madam Alexander dolls. The morning promises to be a great opportunity for creativity and fun\, appropriate for boys and girls alike.\n\n\nThe suggested age for participants is 6-10 years old. The cost to participate is $10 per child for members; $15 per child for non-members.\n\n \n\n\nRegister online or via email.\n\n\nThe Wilton Historical Society is located at 224 Danbury Rd.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Lives and Landscapes: Art from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:From the town’s beginnings in the early 18th century\, work depicting the people and landscapes of Wilton have reflected the ever-changing artistic tides of subject matter\, materials and styles of the next three centuries. The new exhibition\, Lives and Landscapes: Art from the Permanent Collection of the Wilton Historical Society\, opening on June 10\, explores highlights of the art collection from the colonial era to the 1970s. Throughout that time\, Wilton has served as inspiration for a wide variety of creators. Whether simply passing through or ensconced as a long-time resident\, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression or fulfilling commercial contracts\, Wilton’s artists produced a diverse body of work. The exhibition runs through October 29.\n\n\nMembers of Wilton’s colonial first families\, such as the Lamberts\, Beldens\, and Grummans\, commissioned portraits to help display their wealth and power. The two works on display by itinerant painter Ralph Earl were prized – Earl’s patron’s included founding father Roger Sherman – as were the portraits produced by Gilbert Stuart Newton\, nephew of the renowned Gilbert Stuart. Gilbert Stuart is best known for his iconic images of George Washington.\n\n\nOver time\, landscapes rose in popularity. Wilton’s sparsely populated countryside of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries provided beautiful scenery to be captured on canvas and a quiet place to work undisturbed\, while Wilton’s proximity to the cultural hub of New York City ensured a large audience was easily accessible. Artists working in the new Impressionist style\, seeking vistas to be painted “en plein air” populated the area – one of the leaders being J. Alden Weir and his “great good place” Weir Farm. Others like H.G Thomson followed soon after. In the early to mid- 20th century\, a new group of artists emerged. Many congregated in the Silvermine area enjoying both the setting and the proximity to the city. Works produced in Wilton could quickly be placed in any of New York’s numerous museums and galleries.\n\n\nTown landmarks\, such as the 1790 Wilton Congregational Church painted in an impressionistic style “en plein air” by Robert Emmett Owen and the 1726 Lambert House by H.G. Thompson\, are beautifully depicted. Other artists represented in the exhibition include Richard Daggy\, sculptor A. Phimister Proctor\, and Hillary Longmuir.\n\n\nLives and Landscapes explores Wilton’s artistic legacy through a selection of rarely seen work from Wilton Historical’s permanent collection. These works capture something of the personality of the town through the faces and places depicted. They tell the stories of not only the subject matter of the piece\, but the story of a town.\n\n \n\n\nWilton Historical Members: Free; Non-members $10\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Ceremony and Reception for A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, Winner of the Wilton Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14\, A. Robert “Bob” Faesy will receive the inaugural Julian A. Gregory Sr. Award for Historic Preservation at a reception from 5-7 p.m. in Wilton. Join the Wilton Historical Society as it honors Faesy with well-deserved recognition and appreciation at this festive fundraising event. Members and friends are welcome to attend and may request an invitation or purchase a ticket below.\n\n\nGiven by the Wilton Historical Society\, this new award recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the preservation of historic places in Wilton and/or recognizes an individual who inspires others by their commitment\, leadership and vision for helping instill a historic preservation ethic in others. The first recipient selected for the award is A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, long-time Wilton resident\, architect and preservationist.\n\n\nNow an Emeritus Trustee\, Faesy’s vision and dedication to historic preservation helped create the Wilton Historical Society’s Museum Complex\, Lambert Corner\, and Cannon Corner. For decades\, he has been a strong advocate for adaptive reuse and protecting Wilton’s historic landscape.\n\n\nThe award is named for Julian A. Gregory\, Sr. (1874 – 1939) who was elected the first President of the Wilton Historical Society\, and served from 1938-1939. The Wilton Historical Society was formed in 1938\, prompted by distress over the proposed demolition of an historic barn. According to Bob Russell’s book “Wilton: Three Centuries of People\, Places and Progress”\, a group of citizens were “concerned specifically about the imminent removal of the horse sheds behind the Congregational Church\, and generally about the changing character of Wilton” and shortly thereafter founded the Society.\n\n\nProceeds from this event will support the ongoing education and historic preservation mission of the Wilton Historical Society\n\n \n\n\nTo request a mailed invitation\, please contact info@wiltonhistorical.org or call 203-762-7257.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Storytelling through Puppetry\, Quilt Codes and Writing Out Loud: A Celebration of Wilton Reads
DESCRIPTION:There are many ways to tell Wilton’s stories\, both real and imagined\, including puppetry\, quilt codes and “writing out loud”. With a nod to well-known Wilton children’s book authors and illustrators like Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire\, Johnny Gruelle\, E. Boyd Smith\, and Lillian Hoban\, Wilton Historical Society presents “Spring Into Wilton’s Stories!” on Saturday\, May 7 from 2 – 4. The family-focused afternoon will feature the marvelous Adelka of Sova Dance and Puppet Theater\, who will perform two original\, interactive puppet shows loosely based on stories by Wilton children’s book authors and illustrators. Kids will be able to join in a puppet making activity and learn about other ways stories are told. Skilled demonstrator Candiss Cowan will show how special patterns in quilts – “quilt codes” – were an important way to guide enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad\, and explain the stories hidden in the designs. Kids can try their hand at a quilt code activity\, too. Josh Shelov of Written Out Loud will be on hand to add to the storytelling fun. His interactive workshop sparks creativity through collaborative “writing out loud” which he will present in a fun game show style format. Josh is an Emmy-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who has made multiple films in Hollywood\, and teaches storytelling at Yale.\n\n\nPuppet shows will take place in the Abbott Barn at 2:30 and 3:30.\n\n\nEvent admission: Free for Wilton Historical Society members; Non-members $10 per person\, adult or child.\n\n\nPuppetry is Storytelling!\nAdelka Polak is founder and artistic director of Sova Dance & Puppet Theater\, based in Connecticut\, mainly serving schools\, arts venues and community organizations in New England and NYC\, including recent performances at Madison Square Park and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Polak is a dancer\, puppeteer\, mask-performer and movement director whose work has brought her to Denmark\, Bulgaria\, the Czech Republic\, Taiwan\, Scotland and Turkey. She was featured on CPTV’s “Spotlight on the Arts” with Masque Theatre and Larry Hunt in a segment nominated for a cultural Emmy in 2010.\n\n\nPolak shares her knowledge of dance\, puppetry and crossing artistic disciplines with audiences across the U.S. and abroad. She has worked with children across CT to make more than 5\,000 frog puppets since 2016 mainly through Hartford Performs. She also teaches with Z. Briggs and the Jim Henson Foundation in a contract with the VSA Kennedy Center program in order to train educators how to use puppetry in the classroom. She has worked as a professional puppeteer for nearly two decades.\n\n \n\n\nQuilts are Storytelling!\nBefore the Civil War\, more than 100\,000 enslaved people escaped to safety in the north via the Underground Railroad. This was an organized group of abolitionists and already escaped slaves who risked their freedom and their lives to bring others to freedom. But how to communicate with potential travelers who could not read? How to guide them? One way was through the use of quilts and the codes in their patterns. Quilt designs or blocks all have names that are used universally. These names have meaning. Quilt blocks were made into signs and maps to help lead the enslaved to freedom. Some purist historians say this is just “folklore” because it was never “proven”. Quilters will tell you that the fact that it was never proven is exactly the point. The quilts were such clever designs that no one could prove how they were being used. They were “Hidden in Plain Sight”.\n\n\nWriting is Storytelling!\nOriginally taught as a seminar at Yale University\, and now\, mentored by Hollywood and publishing professionals\, Written Out Loud combines group brainstorming sessions with individual writing missions. Kid’s writing skills will grow by leaps and bound\, along with courage\, collaborative spirit\, and empathy.\n\n\nJosh Shelov\, founder and CEO of Written Out Loud\, is an Emmy-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who has made multiple films in Hollywood\, starring Neil Patrick Harris\, Amy Sedaris\, Elijah Wood\, and others\, as well as multiple ESPN “30 for 30” documentaries. He has taught storytelling as an adjunct professor at Yale. Some of his favorite authors and illustrators are Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire of Wilton and their stories of Greek and Norse mythology!\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) Decorating Workshop for Adults and Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky (the name is derived from the Ukrainian verb meaning to write). Expert egg decorator Susan Clark will lead the Wilton Historical Society‘s workshop for adults and children. This ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement a bit like a pen\, filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs between bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design\, or create your own.\n\n\nThe workshop is strictly limited to 20 participants. The program will take place in the Abbott Barn. Family groups will be seated together.  The fee — $30 for Wilton Historical Society members\, $40 for non-members — is per participant and includes materials. The program is suitable for adults and children ages 9 and up.\n\n\nRegistration is required via email or by calling 203.762.7257.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Kids! Make Your Own Valentine’s Day Chocolates!
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Feb. 12\, from 11 a.m.–12 p.m.\, Wilton Historical Society is again offering a very popular chocolate-making workshop for kids in grades K-8. Program participants will make something extra nice for their Valentine — delicious\, professional-looking molded chocolates and a decorated box to put them in! This fun and simple one-hour session will make use of an extensive collection of small\, charming chocolate molds. Hearts\, flowers\, a multitude of animals\, stars\, and even tools are just some of the shapes that will be on hand.\n\n\nRegistration is required and limited to 25 participants. Masks required.\n\n\nMembers: $15 per child; Non-members: $20 per child.\n\n\nTo register\, email the Historical Society or call 203.762.7275.\n\n\nDid you know?\n“Although 18th-century Americans did not enjoy candy bars or other modern chocolate treats as we know them today\, they did love chocolate. In fact\, George Washington ordered 20 pounds of chocolate from British merchant Thomas Knox in 1757 . . . . as hot chocolate was a favorite breakfast beverage at Mount Vernon. . . . This was the first of many chocolate orders he placed over the course of his life.” — From George Washington’s Mount Vernon website\n\n \n\n\n“The tradition of giving chocolates on Valentine’s Day can be traced to Richard Cadbury\, of the English chocolate-making family\, who “invented” the first Valentine’s Day candy box during the Victorian era. The Victorians\, who fancied decorating cards with plump cupids shooting arrows of love\, later transferred the image to the lids of heart-shaped boxes filled with dreamy combinations of silken chocolates.” —“For Lovers\, Chocolate\,” The Buffalo News\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Scherenschnitte Valentine’s Day Card-making Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:According to Quiet Valley Historical Farm in Stroudsburg\, PA\, “Scherenschnitte (pronounced something like Sharon-Sh-knit-a) is the German and Pennsylvania German tradition of cutting paper. Traditionally\, these paper designs were done by folding the paper and cutting to make a continuous design similar to the childhood craft of creating paper snowflakes or paper dolls that hold hands.”\n\n\nOn Saturday\, Feb. 5\, from 11 a.m.–12 p.m.\, Wilton Historical Society will be offering a Valentine’s Day card-making workshop for kids\, featuring scherenschnitte and its popular hearts and flowers motifs. The workshop will be led by Museum Educator Catherine Lipper\, who will talk about the history and customs of Valentine’s Day and its rise in popularity during the Victorian age\, and\, of course\, scherenschnitte. Kids will make their own Valentine cards and heart-shaped sugar cookies with a scherenschnitte-inspired decoration. Sweet!\n\n\nSuggested for ages 6-10. Members: $10 per child; Non-members $15 per child.\n\n\nDid You Know?\n“In the beginning\, scherenschnitte were often used as decorative pieces for birth certificates\, love letters\, and marriage certificates. These tended to incorporate flowers\, birds\, and hearts. Since paper was originally expensive\, old letters or newspapers were often used. This offers some unique insight into the lives of the people who made them. During the Victorian Era\, scherenschnitte was used to make shelf paper for cupboards\, cake doilies\, or table decor.\n\n\nScherenschnitte can also create a picture or tell a story. For the Germans\, many of the picture cutouts were based on folk tales. These images usually featured people and activities\, which shares a lot in common with the French tradition of silhouette cuts. Silhouettes\, white images on black paper\, were often inexpensive forms of art work. They were far less costly than paintings.” — Quiet Valley Historical Farm\, Stroudsburg\, PA\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
