SUMMARY:Challenges and Legal Issues for Students with ADHD and/or Learning Disabilities who are Transitioning to College
DESCRIPTION:Despite their intelligence and enormous potential\, students diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities face continual difficulty addressing transitions. None prove more difficult than the transition from high school to college. What makes this transition difficult is a variety of social and legal changes that many students and parents are not equipped to address. This puts them at high risk to fail\, despite their high potential. If addressed proactively\, however\, the challenges of this transition can be reduced dramatically so these students can have the opportunity to maximize their potential\, and not just survive in the post-secondary environment but to thrive there.\n\n\nRobert M. Tudisco\, Esq.\, a nationally recognized author\, motivational speaker\, practicing attorne\, and adult diagnosed with ADHD\, will address many of the social and legal changes that occur with the transition to college and discuss practical strategies for students to reach their full potential. His presentation will include such topics as: IEPs and making the most of transition planning; converting 504 plans to reasonable accommodation requests in college; high stakes testing accommodations; understanding FERPA and proactively addressing the flow of information; developing strategies to provide structure\, support and accountability while away at school; and diversion of medication and what parents and students need to know.\n\n\nRegister online for this free presentation.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon.\n\n\nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change.\n\n\nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book.\n\n\nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve.\n\n\nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe.\n\n \n\n\nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies).\n\n\nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books.\n\n\nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Tyler Kepner\, "K: A History of Baseball in 10 Pitches"
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball.\n\n\nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez.\n\n\nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship\, then covered the Angels and the Mariners. He joined The New York Times in 2000\, covering the Mets for two seasons\, the Yankees for eight\, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010.\n\n\nQ&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but registration is highly recommended. See the library’s online registration link for more details. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. Media Sponsor for the event is GOOD Morning Wilton. SUMMARY:Wilton Library’s Human Library
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t judge a book by its cover”—but in this case\, we mean human beings\, not books!\n\n\nThe Human Library is an international movement that started in Denmark in 2000 and is now held in more than 70 countries. Wilton Library is the first non-academic library in Connecticut to receive permission from the Human Library Organization to host an event.\n\n\nOur human books are community members who have volunteered to share their stories in order to break down barriers based on appearance or identity (e.g.; age\, race\, sexual orientation\, religion\, ability\, lifestyle choices\, etc.). This is the time for open conversations between two people in a non-judgmental environment. Spend a few minutes with each “book.” It is an opportunity for those who have faced prejudice to tell their story and show people who they really are; and it is a chance for others to change their preconceived notions based on a person’s appearance or identity.\n\n\nThere is no advance registration or fee; guests are invited to come and enjoy the experience.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:"A Journey...." One-Woman Show by Kimberly Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of March as Women’s History Month\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society present A Journey . . .\, a one-woman show by Westport writer and actress Kimberly Wilson. Wilson was awarded “Best Playwright” in 2016 by the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival for the piece. At the end of the presentation\, Wilson will conduct a “talk-back” session.\n\n\nRooted in research\, A Journey is a tour-de-force of acting and song\, as the statuesque Wilson modulates her powerful contralto from a whisper to a fervent spiritual\, capturing the spirits of Harriet Tubman\, Sojourner Truth\, Rosa Parks\, Maya Angelou\, two invented characters she calls the ‘Slave Woman’ and ‘African Queen\,’ and a new historical figure\, Haggar Tonquin of Wilton. Wilson skillfully tells of the struggles and influence of Black womanhood as an integral part of the history of the United States.\n\n\nA reception will follow the talk. No charge but donations are always welcomed. See the library’s registration link for more details. Registration is highly recommended. SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? with Cecelia Bucki
DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919–What’s Changed?’\n\n\nHistorian and author Cecelia Bucki\, Ph.D.\, will survey the domestic unrest that plagued the United States following the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of World War One but on the home front\, conflict continued. The Great War and its aftermath resulted in domestic repercussions such as general strikes\, labor unrest\, race riots\, and Palmer raids. Nationally and here in Connecticut\, peace remained elusive. This part of 1919 remains an untold part of 20th century U.S. history.\n\n\nBucki has taught American history at Fairfield University for more than 25 years. Her specialties within U.S. History are social\, labor and working-class\, and immigration history. She is the author of the award-winning Bridgeport’s Socialist New Deal\, 1915-1936 (University of Illinois Press\, 2001). From 2011-2017\, she was editor-in-chief of the journal Connecticut History Review.\n\n\nSee the library’s registration link for details.\n\n\nThe lecture is sponsored by Lila and Buck Griswold; Max Gabrielson is the moderator. The remaining lectures are as follows (please note the location of each lecture):\n\n \n\n\n\nMarch 10 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Men in Black Sox\,” with Steve Wulf\, ESPN\nMarch 31 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Votes for Women” with Pam Dougherty\, Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.\n\nReception follows the talk. There is no charge but donations are always welcomed. Registration is required. Please register for each lecture individually.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jacqueline Raposo – The Me Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Wiltonian and journalist Jacqueline Raposo finds herself sick\, single\, broke\, and wandering in a fog. Fighting chronic illness\, debt and other low points in her life she embarks on subtracting some of her most constant habits from her life – social media\, shopping\, sugar\, and negative thoughts – for periods of 30 to 90 days over the course of one year.\n\n\nIn this intimately curated search for self-improvement (a quest that readers can easily personalize for themselves)\, Raposo confesses to the sometimes violent and profound shifts in her social interactions\, physical health\, and sense of self-worth. Part memoir\, part case study\, this book offers the reader an inspiring example of how to forge one’s own journey\, expose wounds\, and help personal healing.\n\n\nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writes regularly for Food & Wine\, Saveur\, and Cosmopolitan\, and is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe.\n\n\nSee library’s registration link for more details.
