SUMMARY:"A Journey...." One-Woman Show by Kimberly Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of March as Women’s History Month\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society present A Journey . . .\, a one-woman show by Westport writer and actress Kimberly Wilson. Wilson was awarded “Best Playwright” in 2016 by the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival for the piece. At the end of the presentation\, Wilson will conduct a “talk-back” session.\n\n\nRooted in research\, A Journey is a tour-de-force of acting and song\, as the statuesque Wilson modulates her powerful contralto from a whisper to a fervent spiritual\, capturing the spirits of Harriet Tubman\, Sojourner Truth\, Rosa Parks\, Maya Angelou\, two invented characters she calls the ‘Slave Woman’ and ‘African Queen\,’ and a new historical figure\, Haggar Tonquin of Wilton. Wilson skillfully tells of the struggles and influence of Black womanhood as an integral part of the history of the United States.\n\n\nA reception will follow the talk. No charge but donations are always welcomed. See the library’s registration link for more details. Registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? with Cecelia Bucki
DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919–What’s Changed?’\n\n\nHistorian and author Cecelia Bucki\, Ph.D.\, will survey the domestic unrest that plagued the United States following the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of World War One but on the home front\, conflict continued. The Great War and its aftermath resulted in domestic repercussions such as general strikes\, labor unrest\, race riots\, and Palmer raids. Nationally and here in Connecticut\, peace remained elusive. This part of 1919 remains an untold part of 20th century U.S. history.\n\n\nBucki has taught American history at Fairfield University for more than 25 years. Her specialties within U.S. History are social\, labor and working-class\, and immigration history. She is the author of the award-winning Bridgeport’s Socialist New Deal\, 1915-1936 (University of Illinois Press\, 2001). From 2011-2017\, she was editor-in-chief of the journal Connecticut History Review.\n\n\nSee the library’s registration link for details.\n\n\nThe lecture is sponsored by Lila and Buck Griswold; Max Gabrielson is the moderator. The remaining lectures are as follows (please note the location of each lecture):\n\n \n\n\n\nMarch 10 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Men in Black Sox\,” with Steve Wulf\, ESPN\nMarch 31 at the Wilton Historical Society:  “Votes for Women” with Pam Dougherty\, Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.\n\nReception follows the talk. There is no charge but donations are always welcomed. Registration is required. Please register for each lecture individually.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jacqueline Raposo – The Me Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Wiltonian and journalist Jacqueline Raposo finds herself sick\, single\, broke\, and wandering in a fog. Fighting chronic illness\, debt and other low points in her life she embarks on subtracting some of her most constant habits from her life – social media\, shopping\, sugar\, and negative thoughts – for periods of 30 to 90 days over the course of one year.\n\n\nIn this intimately curated search for self-improvement (a quest that readers can easily personalize for themselves)\, Raposo confesses to the sometimes violent and profound shifts in her social interactions\, physical health\, and sense of self-worth. Part memoir\, part case study\, this book offers the reader an inspiring example of how to forge one’s own journey\, expose wounds\, and help personal healing.\n\n\nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writes regularly for Food & Wine\, Saveur\, and Cosmopolitan\, and is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe.\n\n\nSee library’s registration link for more details. Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Charles Belfoure\, "The Fallen Architect"
DESCRIPTION:A tragedy has happened due to an architectural flaw by Douglas Layton. He is sentenced after a guilty verdict but is it really as a result of his design. After prison he needs to assume a new identity and rebuild his life. But he soon finds himself digging up the past in a way he never anticipated. If the collapse was not an accident … who caused it? And why?\n\n\nThe Fallen Architect is the latest from novelist Charles Belfoure\, the nationally bestselling author of The Paris Architect\, who’s been called “an up and coming Ken Follett” (Booklist). An architect by profession\, Belfoure graduated from the Pratt Institute and Columbia University. His area of specialty is historic preservation\, and he has published several architectural histories. He has been a freelance writer for The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times\, and lives in Maryland.\n\n\nQ&A will follow the talk. No charge. Registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. SUMMARY:New Perspectives Film Series: Sneak Peek Documentary Trailer-Fest!
DESCRIPTION:New Perspectives programmer and moderator Megan Smith-Harris has watched over 200 new documentaries in preparation for the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival. She has put together a curated selection of trailers for the best-of-the-best\, soon-to-be released docs exclusively for Wilton Library. She’ll provide context and behind-the-scenes insights about each film. The audience will be canvassed about which titles they would like to see screened during the 2018/19 New Perspectives Series season\, so in essence\, everyone will become a film programmer for the evening.\n\n\nShe also will discuss the anatomy of a trailer–describing how a 90-minute film is cut to a 90-second teaser. Suggested donation:  $5. Refreshments will be served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. Registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
