SUMMARY:Author Talk: Charles Belfoure\, "The Fallen Architect"
DESCRIPTION:A tragedy has happened due to an architectural flaw by Douglas Layton. He is sentenced after a guilty verdict but is it really as a result of his design. After prison he needs to assume a new identity and rebuild his life. But he soon finds himself digging up the past in a way he never anticipated. If the collapse was not an accident … who caused it? And why?\n\n\nThe Fallen Architect is the latest from novelist Charles Belfoure\, the nationally bestselling author of The Paris Architect\, who’s been called “an up and coming Ken Follett” (Booklist). An architect by profession\, Belfoure graduated from the Pratt Institute and Columbia University. His area of specialty is historic preservation\, and he has published several architectural histories. He has been a freelance writer for The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times\, and lives in Maryland.\n\n\nQ&A will follow the talk. No charge. Registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. SUMMARY:New Perspectives Film Series: Sneak Peek Documentary Trailer-Fest!
DESCRIPTION:New Perspectives programmer and moderator Megan Smith-Harris has watched over 200 new documentaries in preparation for the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival. She has put together a curated selection of trailers for the best-of-the-best\, soon-to-be released docs exclusively for Wilton Library. She’ll provide context and behind-the-scenes insights about each film. The audience will be canvassed about which titles they would like to see screened during the 2018/19 New Perspectives Series season\, so in essence\, everyone will become a film programmer for the evening.\n\n\nShe also will discuss the anatomy of a trailer–describing how a 90-minute film is cut to a 90-second teaser. Suggested donation:  $5. Refreshments will be served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. Registration is highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Playing By Heart XII Piano Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Local Piano Students Perform at Wilton Library\n\n\n*This event is not sponsored\, co-sponsored\, or approved by Wilton Library.\nOn Sunday\, Sept. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Brubeck Room of the Wilton Library\, advanced students of Wilton pianist and teacher Kyong Hee Cho will perform in the 12th “Playing By Heart Benefit Concert.”\n\n\nThis year’s concert will benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education (NGTE)\, an organization dedicated to helping “underserved children in Norwalk through tennis and education.” NGTE’s goal “is to ensure each of our kids is on a path towards success on the court\, in the classroom and in life.” Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.\n\n\nThis year’s concert will feature music by Beethoven\, Brahms and Chopin as well as selections by more contemporary composers Debussy\, Morton Gould and Dmitry Kabalevsky. The program is set by the choices of the performers\, some of whom select a piece because they heard it performed by another student in a previous concert and often with the guidance of Mrs. Cho\, whose primary goal as a teacher is “…to develop music lovers as well as good listeners in addition to being proficient pianists.”\n\n\nPreparation for the concert begins well in advance of the September performance\, as the students (with the help of sponsors and parents) choose the beneficiary organization. Intensive practices and late summer rehearsals place a demand on these already busy students\, several of whom play other instruments in symphonic\, jazz and marching bands or school\, local and regional orchestras. Performers need to transcend mere memorization of notes to wrestle with dynamics and tempo to develop a unique interpretation of a piece. Although all play regularly in recitals\, they concur that this is different because “people have paid to hear you play.”\n\n \n\n\nAs Sharon Kesselman\, one of the adults who will perform\, put it\, “Without the performance\, there would be not as much incentive to learn the piece. It’s about being nervous\, wanting to show off my best\, wanting not to fail —all of this helps with motivation to practice a piece that has already been practiced quite a bit\, and then practice it some more. It’s about the journey.”\n\n\nTickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Kyong Hee Cho via email.\n\n\nPictured:  Top row–Sharon Kesselman\, Woongki Hong\, Colin Hong\, Jack Nanez\, Peyton Lauricella\, and teacher Kyong Hee Cho; bottom row–Alisyn Kercher and Claudia Nanez. Missing from the photo is student Martha West-Glynn.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
