SUMMARY:Teaching Autistic Children: A Way That Works for Parents
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another important SPED*NET presentation on Wednesday\, Apr. 29\, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilton Library. Robert J. Bernstein\, an educational and behavioral therapist\, will discuss ways to help your child engage\, assimilate new information\, and develop new thoughts and behaviors.\n\n\nWe want our autistic children to live happy and successful lives. Many parents\, however\, often approach their kids with an agenda: instead of offering acceptance and approval\, they want their child to do something differently—to change. Consequently\, autistic kids frequently feel that who they are is not who people want them to be. They end up hiding their authentic nature and keeping up a façade.\n\n\nRob Bernstein has been working with children on the autism spectrum for over 35 years. His book Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normal\, including first place for “Parenting Family” from the New Generation Indie Book Awards. His newest book is Uniquely Normal Manual: Using the Bernstein Cognitive Method for Autism (Future Horizons\, 2023). Rob has a personal link to autism\, having grown up with an autistic brother and as the parent of an autistic son. His family experience led him to train in developmental psychology and education\, the knowledge base that underlies his cognitive method for working with autistic children. He is well established with a media presence through his podcast\, monthly webinars that he runs for the US Autism Association and his YouTube channel with Marcia Eckerd\, Everything Neurodiversity. His work has been featured on Dateline and in the New York Times. Rob has presented dozens of workshops and keynote addresses at both national and international conferences. He is an international consultant working with autistic children and special education PTA groups across the United States\, the United Kingdom\, and India. He is on the Board of Directors of ARC and the US Autism Association.\n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, Easton CT SEPTA and Newtown Sped PTA.\n\n\nRegister at: https://wilton.librarycalendar.com/event/hold-spednet-31172\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:The Wilton Library Presents Film Screening: “Join or Die”
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library at a special screening of Join or Die\, a film about why you should join a club…and why the fate of America depends on it.\n\n\nIn this Emmy-nominated feature documentary\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam\, whose groundbreaking Bowling Alone research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. The film also discusses the direct impact of social disconnection on mortality rates\, arguing that people living in social isolation die earlier than those with stronger social bonds. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Priya Parker\, Pete Buttigieg\, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Jane McAlevey\, and Eddie Glaude Jr. — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country\, Bob explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it?\n\n\nAbout Robert Putnam: \nHarvard professor Robert D. Putnam is America’s preeminent political scientist — and one of the most widely read and cited social scientists living today. Author of fourteen books\, translated into twenty languages\, his work focuses on asking big questions about American society and deploying immense\, creative studies and analyses to unlock answers.\n\n\nHis Bowling Alone research — which demonstrated that levels of American community connections were in decline over the past half-century — rocketed Putnam to national fame in the late 1990s\, earning him the moniker “the poet laureate of civil society” and the ear of presidents\, religious leaders\, and tech founders over the coming decades. In 2012\, Putnam received the National Humanities Medal\, the nation’s highest honor for contributions to the humanities. As more Americans turn on to the reality of our social isolation crisis\, a consistent drumbeat of media interest in revisiting Putnam’s work has grown. More information is available at https://joinordiefilm.com/.\n\n\nDoors will open at 6:30 p.m\, with the film to begin at 7:00 p.m. The run time is 90 minutes. Movie snacks & refreshments provided.\n\n \n\n\nRegistration is requested. Please register online or call (203) 762-6334.\n\n\nThis program is made possible by the generosity and collaboration of Block Party USA\, Town of Wilton Social Services\, Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, and Wilton Youth Council.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:America 250: Abigail Adams\, America's First Modern Woman\, as Told by Her Husband John Adams
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th anniversary commemorating the American Revolution and the signing of our Declaration of Independence\, the month of March – designated as National Women’s History Month – is a fitting time to celebrate Abigail Adams\, a woman ahead of her time\, as told by her husband John Adams\, portrayed by George Baker. SUMMARY:Wilton Library Presents Solo Exhibition “Western Stars” by Redding Artist Robert Mars

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Presents Music for Youth’s Emerging Artists Concert Featuring Award-Winning Cellist Sydney Lee
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library for Music for Youth’s Emerging Artists concert featuring award-winning cellist Sydney Lee. This program celebrates the lyrical intimacy and rich harmonic language of French music from the late Romantic to early 20th century. César Franck’s radiant Sonata in A major anchors the program with its sweeping emotional arc and cyclical design\, a hallmark of French Romanticism. Nadia Boulanger’s Three Pieces for Cello and Piano offer a more introspective voice of poetic miniatures that reveal delicate shades of color and quiet nuance. Camille Saint-Saëns’s beloved The Swan and Gabriel Fauré’s graceful Sicilienne complement these works with their elegance\, warmth\, and timeless melodic charm. Together\, these pieces trace a lineage of French expressivity—refined\, nostalgic\, and deeply human.\n\n\nPraised for her “mesmerizing” interpretation of Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante\, where she “surmounted all of its technical challenges with ease and gave us a joyous musical experience” (Julian Lloyd Webber\, solo cellist)\, Sydney Lee captivates audiences with her refined elegance\, expressive depth\, and radiant sincerity. A rising force in the classical music world\, Sydney was awarded First Prize at the 2022 Washington International Competition\, Second Prize at the Classic Strings International Competition\, and became the inaugural recipient of Meadowmount School of Music’s prestigious $50\,000 Gurrena Fellowship. Since making her solo debut at age thirteen with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Sydney has performed across North America and Europe in such renowned venues as Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and Terrace Theater\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center\, Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium\, and the Konzerthaus Berlin.\n\n\nCollaborating with Sydney on this concert is Music for Youth Emerging Artist\, Serena Li. Serena\, age 14\, is one of the talented high school musicians selected by Music for Youth to be part of their Emerging Artists program. She currently studies at Juilliard Pre-College under the tutelage of Clara Minhye Kim\, and has won many awards in cello.\n\n\nThis concert is appropriate for adults and seniors\, as well as youth interested in music in grades 4-12. Registration suggested. Register & See Details\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Free Presentation: A Parent’s Guide to Psycho-Educational and Neuropsychological Evaluations
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the evaluation process can be overwhelming. As a parent\, you want to advocate for your child\, but the steps to access support — whether through school or privately — can be confusing. Pediatric neuropsychologist Yael Rothman\, PhD\, will discuss reasons for seeking an evaluation\, what is typically assessed\, and how evaluations may differ depending on the setting. Understanding the results of the assessment is critical\, yet parents may leave feedback sessions feeling uncertain about what the findings mean or what to do next. Rothman will also explain how to interpret the results and offer guidance on how to use that information to pursue the appropriate supports and services for your child.\n\n\nRegister for this free\, in-person presentation online. \n\n\nPresented by SPED*NETr in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA \n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green Presents: Totally Obsessed with "Kelp!"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Go Green to watch Kelp!\, a 30-minute documentary and then hear from Dr. Leigh Shemitz about kelp in local waters.\n\n\nAbout Kelp! the documentary: Under the looming shadow of ecological breakdown\, a young filmmaker searches for a surprising super-solution that can help build a better future for humans and the planet. On an epic adventure aboard the good ship Gleaner through Britain’s rugged coastline\, they discover the power of kelp to regenerate our coasts\, empower communities and even replace plastic.\n\n\nAfter the film Shemitz\, president of SoundWaters\, will share what it is like to grow kelp locally\, just a few miles away. SoundWaters has farmed kelp in Long Island Sound for several years\, and Shemitz will explain what it takes to grow kelp\, including the timing and process and the challenges and successes. She will discuss the environmental benefits of kelp farming: how it can improve water quality and provide key nutrients for upland farms in our region.\n\n\nShemitz is the president of SoundWaters\, where her responsibilities include setting strategic direction\, developing programs\, creating partnerships\, overseeing operations and managing the SoundWaters staff and budget. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps SoundWaters fulfill its mission to inspire future generations to create a better world through joyful learning on Long Island Sound. Shemitz currently serves on the board of directors of the Stamford Environmental Protection Board and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens\, and is an emeritus board member at the New Haven Urban Resource Initiative. Shemitz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and literature from Harvard University; and a Master’s degree in forest science and a Ph.D. in environmental health\, both from Yale University.\n\n\nRegistration is suggested.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
