SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Brubeck's Time Out
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the second program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on 1959’s seminal jazz albums. The series runs as follows:\n\n\n• March 20: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n• April 10: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n• May 22: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n• June 19: Post-1959 Impact and Aftermath\n\n\nAmong the jazz albums of 1959\, Time Out\, recorded by the Brubeck Quartet at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City\, contains some of the most unusual innovations. Fresh off a State Department-sponsored trip abroad\, the quartet recorded a litany of songs featuring unusual rhythmic and metrical features. Despite the unusual nature of the rhythms that suffuse the album\, it still quickly gained popularity. It rose to No. 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart\, while its signature single\, “Take Five” became the first jazz single to sell 1 million copies. SUMMARY:The Weekend The British Burned Danbury
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special presentation on the Weekend the British Burned Danbury given by the Danbury-based host of the popular podcast on Connecticut history\, Mike Allen.\n\n\nIn 1777\, early in the Revolutionary War\, a weekend military mission into inland Connecticut was supposed to be a seminal military victory for the British in their attempts to put down the Patriot uprising. The objective was to march inland from Long Island Sound and remove Danbury as a key supply center for the Patriot military. It was the first time the British had marched inland to do battle during the war\, and the strategy did not work out as planned. Included in the presentation are the burning of Danbury as well as the Battles of Ridgefield and Saugatuck on the march back to Long Island Sound through Wilton.\n\n\nAllen specializes in bringing local history to life through his background in journalism\, radio broadcasting\, podcasting and public speaking. He is the producer and host of the popular podcast on Connecticut history\, Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path\, rated in the top 5-10% of podcasts nationally. For 10 years\, Allen was News Director at western Connecticut radio station i-95 FM (WRKI-FM) before becoming Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury. During a subsequent\, 25-year corporate career\, he worked\, lived\, and traveled internationally\, specializing in public speaking\, communications\, and marketing. Allen has lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and currently resides in Danbury.\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Drum Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.\n\n\nRegistration is recommended online or call 203.762.6334.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors.\n\n\nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place.\n\n\nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives.\n\n\nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon.\n\n\nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home.\n\n \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life — A Live Theatrical Performance by Ginger Grace
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month\, 30 days of celebrating the joy\, expressiveness\, and pure delight of poetry. What better way to celebrate poetry than by honoring the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson? Join Wilton Library for this interactive production of “Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life\,” created and performed by Ginger Grace.\n\n\nDickinson takes viewers on a delirious romp through her life and times. Wit\, wonder and wisdom are the order of the day. The audience finds itself in the midst of life changing events and relationships as Dickinson defies the conventions of her time – and creates poetry for the ages. On occasion\, she steps out of the play\, calls out to the audience for words and ideas\, weaves those into the fabric of the piece – and now\, the possibilities with words are limitless!\n\n\n“Animated – informal and personal – you made me love Emily Dickinson.”\n\n\nGrace’s acting credits include the national tour of The Presidents (opposite Rich Little). Off-Broadway: The Glass Menagerie; Miss Julie; Faust; and Electra. Regional: Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey; The First Ladies Coalition (written and performed by Grace); The Belle of Amherst; and Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life (written and performed by Grace); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf; and Doubt. Film: Wedding March by Deborah Savadge; Chris Shomojima’s 6-Minute Mom; and The Trouble with Tuesdays by Martine Sainvil.\n\n\nGrace has worked with the CASA Program\, helping inner-city school children create their own shows\, and she thrives on bringing out the voices of children in the theater.\n\n \n\n\nRegistration is required.
