SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Spring Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: From the Atlantic to the Pacific — Imagination is Prolific
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special poetry seminar series with Judson Scruton as part of this year’s Wilton Reads program which features Cristina Henriquez’s The Great Divide\, an epic novel on the construction of the Panama Canal. His series will run on four Thursday mornings starting on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. They will distribute a packet with a detailed schedule of readings and links to the poems in advance.\n\n\nAs part of this year’s Wilton Reads\, Scruton will conduct four seminars mingling literary responses to two massive undertakings that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans:\n– the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (1863-1960) featuring poems by Bret Hart\, Walt Whitman\, Theodore Roethke\, and others.\n– the building of the Panama Canal (1904-1914) featuring Henriquez’s novel The Great Divide.\n\n\nAlthough he will make references to the novel throughout the series\, the fourth Thursday’s discussion will have the primary discussion related to the novel (April 25).\n\n\nScruton\, M.A. (Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry)\, taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator\, Judson also directed publications\, communications\, public relations\, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K.\, including the Newberry Library in Chicago.\n\n\nAdvance registration is required online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. There is automatic registration for all four sessions upon registering for the first session. This lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Email Andrea Sato with any questions.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors.\n\n\nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place.\n\n\nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives.\n\n\nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon.\n\n\nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home.\n\n \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving.\n\n\nRegister online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life — A Live Theatrical Performance by Ginger Grace
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month\, 30 days of celebrating the joy\, expressiveness\, and pure delight of poetry. What better way to celebrate poetry than by honoring the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson? Join Wilton Library for this interactive production of “Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life\,” created and performed by Ginger Grace.\n\n\nDickinson takes viewers on a delirious romp through her life and times. Wit\, wonder and wisdom are the order of the day. The audience finds itself in the midst of life changing events and relationships as Dickinson defies the conventions of her time – and creates poetry for the ages. On occasion\, she steps out of the play\, calls out to the audience for words and ideas\, weaves those into the fabric of the piece – and now\, the possibilities with words are limitless!\n\n\n“Animated – informal and personal – you made me love Emily Dickinson.”\n\n\nGrace’s acting credits include the national tour of The Presidents (opposite Rich Little). Off-Broadway: The Glass Menagerie; Miss Julie; Faust; and Electra. Regional: Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey; The First Ladies Coalition (written and performed by Grace); The Belle of Amherst; and Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life (written and performed by Grace); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf; and Doubt. Film: Wedding March by Deborah Savadge; Chris Shomojima’s 6-Minute Mom; and The Trouble with Tuesdays by Martine Sainvil.\n\n\nGrace has worked with the CASA Program\, helping inner-city school children create their own shows\, and she thrives on bringing out the voices of children in the theater.\n\n \n\n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood.\n\n\nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history.\n\n\nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians.\n\n\nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate.\n\n\nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs.\n\n \n\n\nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program.\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton.\n\n\nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot.\n\n\nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls.\n\n\nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book.\n\n\nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest.\n\n\nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library.\n\n \n\n\nRegistration is requested online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

The series will run as follows:\n\n\n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/19/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths\n\n\nThe year 1959 might be described as no less than a seismic year for jazz. Celebrated figures including Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Dave Brubeck\, Charles Mingus\, Ornette Coleman\, and more wrote and performed at this time. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College\, where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he has been presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. In 2020\, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award. SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: Innovation\, Disruption\, Revolution: The Impact of Technological Advancement — John Kao
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Innovation — John Kao\, Turing Fellow at Yale’s Digital Media Center\n\n\nIn the 17th year of Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society’s collaboration\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Innovation\, Disruption\, Revolution: The Impact of Technological Advancement.” In this lecture\, John Kao presents a contemporary view of what innovation is\, where it is going\, and how advanced technology is reshaping its foundations.\n\n\nThe current state of innovation does not\, for the most part\, fit new business and societal realities. Innovation remains essential\, especially in these turbulent times. But\, to remain relevant\, evolution is necessary. Its very definition needs clarification and reimagination. The future of innovation is intimately entwined with the rapid advance of technology. Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT\, innovation marketplaces\, and augmented reality are only some of the influences that will shape future innovation practices. And\, they raise the central question of how humans and machines will renegotiate the trade space for creativity\, entrepreneurship…and innovation.\n\n\nFor the past 25 years\, Kao worked with the ideas of innovation\, creativity\, entrepreneurship and leadership. Dubbed “Mr. Creativity” by The Economist\, his work is varied. This includes 14 years at Harvard Business School\, visiting appointments at the MIT Media Lab and attendance at the US Naval Postgraduate School\, among others. He also graced Hollywood\, Broadway\, the music industry\, politics and national security and Silicon Valley with his expertise.\n\n\nKao is currently the Turing Fellow at Yale’s Digital Media Center\, a Visiting Fellow at Yale Engineering School and a Yale entrepreneur-in-residence. He co-founded and is Chairman Emeritus of ThayerMahan\, Inc.\, a leader in maritime intelligence. With a BA and MD from Yale and a Harvard MBA\, Kao is also the author of Jamming and Innovation Nation: How America Is Losing Its Innovation Edge\, Why It Matters and What We Can Do To Get It Back.\n\n \n\n\nThis series is sponsored by Laureen Mody. The moderator is Max Gabrielson. A reception follows the talk and there is no charge to attend\, but donations are welcome. Visit the Wilton Library website for required registration as well as additional dates\, topics\, and speaker details. Call to register at 203.762.6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Patrick Bringley on his Memoir: All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk with Patrick Bringley. He shares his debut memoir\, All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me. This is an intimate look at The Met and its profound effect on Bringley’s life while he grieved the death of his older brother.\n\n\nCaught up in his fledgling career at the New Yorker in his mid-twenties\, Bringley’s life suddenly changed with his adored older brother’s terminal cancer diagnosis. He consequently quit his job and looked for solace and quiet in the most beautiful place he knew: The Met. He spent the next decade as a museum guard.\n\n\nOver the years\, as his bonds with his colleagues and the art grew\, he came to understand how fortunate he was to be walled off in this little world. He also realized how much it resembled the best aspects of the larger world to which he gradually\, gratefully returned.\n\n\nAll the Beauty in the World has been named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Public Library\, NPR\, the Financial Times\, and Audible. The Sunday Times (London) even selected it as the Outstanding Art Book of 2023. It is additionally published in translated editions around the world.\n\n\nBringley leads public and private tours of The Met and lectures at venues around the country\, living with his wife and children in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn.\n\n \n\n\nElm Street Books will sell copies and Bringley will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library.\n\n\nGOOD Morning Wilton is the media sponsor of this event.\n\n\nRegistration is required online.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
