Please join the Wilton Library for this inspiring performance on Thursday\, Mar. 12\, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\n\n\nSince 2008\, George Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country. He speaks with admiration\, humor\, and affection about his wife\, Abigail\, the “First Modern American Woman\,” describing how she defied the sexist conventions of her time\, that married women could not own property\, yet\, with her amazing financial skills and insights\, made the Adams family prosperous. She helped John found the new nation\, advised him in important political affairs\, and raised their son\, John Quincy Adams\, to be prepared to ultimately become Ambassador to Great Britain\, Secretary of State\, and finally President of the United States. It is a story about their romance\, challenges\, trials\, and accomplishments\, which is the story of ordinary people living in extraordinary times.\n\n\nGeorge Baker:\n\n\nGeorge Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country at national conventions and venues like Mystic Seaport\, the Presidential Libraries of Harry S Truman\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, and George H. W. Bush\, and the New York Historical Society\, and was featured as John Adams on NPR‘s weekend program\, Studio 360. In this new body of work\, Mars explores the intersection of myth and memory\, drawing connections between classic Western films and the glowing iconography of vintage neon signs\, both of which shaped the mythology of the American West by transforming history into enduring symbols of freedom\, danger\, and rugged individualism. Mars pairs cinematic drama with luminous roadside Americana to examine how these myths persist in cultural memory\, flickering between fact and fantasy\, darkness and light.\n\n\nThe “Western Stars” opening reception on Friday\, Feb. 6\, from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. This program celebrates the lyrical intimacy and rich harmonic language of French music from the late Romantic to early 20th century. César Franck’s radiant Sonata in A major anchors the program with its sweeping emotional arc and cyclical design\, a hallmark of French Romanticism. Nadia Boulanger’s Three Pieces for Cello and Piano offer a more introspective voice of poetic miniatures that reveal delicate shades of color and quiet nuance. Camille Saint-Saëns’s beloved The Swan and Gabriel Fauré’s graceful Sicilienne complement these works with their elegance\, warmth\, and timeless melodic charm. Together\, these pieces trace a lineage of French expressivity—refined\, nostalgic\, and deeply human.\n\n\nPraised for her “mesmerizing” interpretation of Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante\, where she “surmounted all of its technical challenges with ease and gave us a joyous musical experience” (Julian Lloyd Webber\, solo cellist)\, Sydney Lee captivates audiences with her refined elegance\, expressive depth\, and radiant sincerity. A rising force in the classical music world\, Sydney was awarded First Prize at the 2022 Washington International Competition\, Second Prize at the Classic Strings International Competition\, and became the inaugural recipient of Meadowmount School of Music’s prestigious $50\,000 Gurrena Fellowship. Since making her solo debut at age thirteen with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Sydney has performed across North America and Europe in such renowned venues as Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and Terrace Theater\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center\, Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium\, and the Konzerthaus Berlin.\n\n\nCollaborating with Sydney on this concert is Music for Youth Emerging Artist\, Serena Li. This workshop aims to address challenges that we all face regarding greater technology use and changes in social support structures\, and offers a variety of ways to enhance a sense of connectedness for ourselves and our children. Join psychologist Dr. Jackie Britt-Friedman\, an assistant professor at the Yale Child Study Center\, to:\n\n\n\nExplore the challenges of parenting in current times with increased technology use and decrease in social supports\nIdentify ways to promote healthy technology use in the context of children’s developmental needs\nLearn strategies to improve connectedness and a sense of belonging\n\nBritt-Friedman is an Assistant Professor with Yale’s Child Study Center and a clinical child psychologist with extensive experience both in schools and in clinical settings. Reynolds will be in conversation with Valmai Hanson\, head of Teen Services at Wilton Library.\n\n\nReynolds is a number-one New York Times bestselling author of novels and poetry for young adult and middle-grade audiences\, and a 2024 MacArthur Fellow. His new book\, Coach\, came out on Oct. 14 and is the fifth book in the New York Times bestselling “Track” series. Some of his other works include Twenty-Four Seconds From Now…\, National Book Award Finalist Look Both Ways\, Caldecott Honor There Was a Party for Langston\, and Ain’t Burned All The Bright\, a Caldecott Honor winner. In his works\, Reynolds aims to depict the rich inner lives of kids of color and ensure that they see themselves and their communities in literature.\n\n\nBorn in Washington\, DC\, and raised in Maryland\, Reynolds first found inspiration in rap and began writing poetry when he was 9 years old. On an epic adventure aboard the good ship Gleaner through Britain’s rugged coastline\, they discover the power of kelp to regenerate our coasts\, empower communities and even replace plastic.\n\n\nAfter the film Shemitz\, president of SoundWaters\, will share what it is like to grow kelp locally\, just a few miles away. SoundWaters has farmed kelp in Long Island Sound for several years\, and Shemitz will explain what it takes to grow kelp\, including the timing and process and the challenges and successes. She will discuss the environmental benefits of kelp farming: how it can improve water quality and provide key nutrients for upland farms in our region.\n\n\nShemitz is the president of SoundWaters\, where her responsibilities include setting strategic direction\, developing programs\, creating partnerships\, overseeing operations and managing the SoundWaters staff and budget. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps SoundWaters fulfill its mission to inspire future generations to create a better world through joyful learning on Long Island Sound. Shemitz currently serves on the board of directors of the Stamford Environmental Protection Board and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens\, and is an emeritus board member at the New Haven Urban Resource Initiative. DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library on Friday evening\, Apr. 25\, for a special author talk program with Wilton’s First Selectman Toni Boucher as we celebrate the publication of her first book\, The Husky Effect: How UConn is Creating the Entrepreneurs of the Future\, a deeply personal story of entrepreneurship and ingenuity as well as a thoughtful exploration of the spirit of innovation that’s flourishing in the University of Connecticut School of Business\, inspired by the national champion UConn Huskies men’s and women’s basketball teams.\n\n\nIn The Husky Effect\, Boucher — a selectman\, former Connecticut state legislator\, executive\, and UConn School of Business alum — lays out a recipe for entrepreneurs of any age to reach for their dreams. Boucher explores the stories of her father\, who brought her family to the United States when she was a little girl\, and her late husband\, Bud\, both of whom\, despite risks and failures\, never gave up until they found success. That dogged determination and the incredible success of Bud’s businesses allowed Toni to name the Boucher Management and Entrepreneurship Department at the UConn School of Business in his honor. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Teen Library Council (TLC) is a monthly group for youth in grades 6-12 who are interested in becoming more involved with the library. All Wilton teens are welcome. Benefits include: helping librarians choose teen materials\, brainstorming ideas for teen programs\, gaining experience working in a leadership role\, and helping the community through service projects.\n\n\nEach meeting will consist of a small group activity and discussion of upcoming events. The group will meet the second Tuesday of each month and participants are encouraged to attend all meetings. Registration is optional\, but participants are encouraged to submit a TLC application before the first meeting.\n\n\nRegister on the Wilton Library’s website. Tickets for the “Decades” Spring Gala Fundraiser are on sale now.\n\n\nThe evening will honor the past decades\, bring us together for a festive party\, and raise funds to help ensure a strong future.\n\n\nThe celebration features passed hors d’oeuvres\, an open bar\, an elegant sit-down dinner\, a live DJ and dancing\, a silent auction\, a wine pull\, a paddle raise\, and more. Nostalgia will fill the air as partygoers travel through time: they’ll start with the Roaring ’20s\, cruise through the ’50s and ’60s\, do the ‘70s hustle\, flash back to the ’80s\, and party like it’s 1999. Dancing to music will transport guests to another time and the festive atmosphere will feature iconic items that defined earlier days.\n\n\nDecades will be held on Friday\, April 4\, from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at Wilton Library. Tickets are on sale now at $225 per person and must be purchased in advance. Tickets include dinner\, dancing and open bar. DESCRIPTION:FOCUS ’25\, a collection of 211 photographs from 128 photographers (including 43 by high school students and 29 by youths)\, is on display at the Wilton Library through Apr. 23 during library hours.\n\n\nFOCUS ’25 is the 25th event organized by the Wilton Arts Council for the public to participate in sharing their photos. The photos were judged by three judges in three divisions (adult\, high school and youth). Many photos are available for sale.
