SUMMARY:Wilton Candlelight Concerts: Tesla String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Tesla Quartet is known the world over for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play\, regardless of era\, style\, or technical demand” (The International Review of Music). From cutting-edge contemporary works to established masterpieces\, the Tesla Quartet’s emotive and thoughtful interpretations reveal the ensemble’s deep commitment to the craft and to their ever-expanding repertoire. The quartet recognizes the power of their platform to amplify underrepresented voices and to encourage the proliferation of an equitable and just future for society as well as a hospitable climate for posterity.\n\n\nThe quartet performs regularly across North America and Europe\, with recent highlights including their debut at New York’s Lincoln Center\, a return to London’s Wigmore Hall\, and performances at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall as winners of the prestigious John Lad Prize. Other recent international engagements include tours of Brazil\, China\, and South Korea. Notable festival appearances include the Banff Centre International String Quartet Festival; the Joseph Haydn String Quartet Festival at the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd\, Hungary; the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in Germany; and the Festival Sesc de Música de Câmara in São Paulo\, Brazil.\n\n\nThe Quartet commissioned 12 works by composers from across North America in 2020 for their online series Alternating Currents\, an homage to Beethoven and a celebration of diverse voices. Tesla Quartet has also helped pioneer ImmerSphere\, an immersive augmented reality virtual concert experience\, bringing familiar community stages directly into the homes of concert-starved audiences. With renewed hope for a brighter future\, the Tesla Quartet is focusing its efforts in the coming seasons on inspiring climate action with the commissions of several works for string quartet that touch on different aspects of the climate crisis and recovery.\n\n\nThe group originally formed at The Juilliard School in 2008 and quickly established itself as one of the most promising young ensembles in New York\, winning Second Prize at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition only a few months after its inception. From 2009 to 2012\, the quartet held a fellowship as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder\, where they studied with the world-renowned Takács Quartet. SUMMARY:Documentary:   "Angst: Raising Awareness about Anxiety"
DESCRIPTION:Following high community interest in this documentary when it was shown at the recent Day of Recovery at Wilton Presbyterian Church in November 2019\, church officials have arranged a second showing of the film\, Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety\, which was created to start community conversations about anxiety and to provide tools\, resources and hope.\n\n\nOn Sunday\, Jan. 26\, Wilton Presbyterian Church will hold a special screening of the documentary in our church Lounge to open up a dialogue between local families\, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film\, followed by an informative discussion led by several area therapists/mental health professionals.\n\n\nThe producers have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews\, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships\, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps\, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition\, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects\, along with the help\, resources and tools available to address the condition.\n\n\n“Part of the beauty of this film is the openness of the children and young adults featured; for some of them\, the Angst project marks the first time they are publicly sharing their experiences with anxiety. Our hope is that their candidness and bravery will inspire our community to do the same\,” says Rev. Shannon White of WPC. The film is appropriate for ages 6th grade through adult.\n\n\nWhile “Angst” documents the struggles some people have with anxiety\, it also reveals their hope for the future. Noah\, a teenager in the film\, describes it this way:  “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it also gives me strength.”\n\n \n\n\n“Everybody needs to know that anxiety disorders are real\, common and treatable instead of viewing them as a personal choice or something to be ashamed of\,” said Dr. Jerry Bubrick\, senior director of the Anxiety Disorders Center\, Child Mind Institute. “Getting help early is crucial in giving people the tools they need to feel better. We just need to start the conversation.”\n\n\nAnxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S.\, impacting 54% of females and 46% of males\, with age seven being the median age of onset\, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable\, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety–from the producers to the interviewees.\n\n\n“The conversation surrounding mental health really hits home for me\,” said the well-known athlete Phelps. “Many people don’t understand how debilitating mental illness truly can be\, and even more than that\, how common it is\, yet people are afraid to have the serious discussions about it. I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of Angst to further the dialogue around mental health and to help people understand the impact anxiety has on our mental state and encourage people\, especially kids\, to ask for help.”\n\n\nThis film and reception is funded by a grant from the Presbyterian Church\, Mental Health Ministries. The grant was given to Wilton Presbyterian Church last year and also funded the Day of Recovery last November.\n\n\nFree tickets are now available and space is limited! The screening will be held at Wilton Presbyterian Church at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 26. DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill presents an exquisite choral experience that will include the rarely performed works of French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)\, including his “Te Deum\,” “Regina Caeli\,” and “Messe a 8 voix et 8 violons et flutes.” The festival and chamber choruses of Music on the Hill will be joined by organ\, trumpets\, strings and timpani in the acoustically rich and resonant church sanctuary.\n\n\nIt will be a special afternoon of music\, inspired by the lovely gardens and buildings of the Palais de Versailles\, where many of these musical gems were composed and/or originally performed in Charpentier’s lifetime. Living at virtually the same time as the Sun King\, Louis XIV (1638-1715)\, Charpentier and his music are representative of a distinctive era in French history\, when absolute monarchy reigned\, and France was widely recognized for its rich\, indulgent and breath-taking culture and arts–many say the greatest in French history.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
