SUMMARY:Wilton Family Y Hosts Pedal to End Cancer Cycling Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 18\, from 8-11 a.m.\, the Riverbrook Regional/Wilton Family Y is hosting a Pedal to End Cancer fundraising event to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS). This special event is open to members and non-members who would like to raise money for a good cause. Riverbrook Y instructors will motivate participants through one\, two\, or three hours of cycling. The money raised goes toward ACS funding for groundbreaking cancer research\, critical patient care services\, education\, and prevention initiatives.\n\n \n\nThe Riverbrook Regional YMCA holds indoor cycling classes for all levels seven days a week and has a variety of other group exercise classes geared towards members of all ages and abilities. They are also proud to offer Livestrong\, a 12-week exercise program for adult cancer survivors in all stages of recovery.\n\n \n\nIn honor of Colorectal Cancer Awareness month in March\, Wilton Y Director of Healthy Living Rhoda Kasparek wanted to host this event to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and promote screening. Representatives from Nuvance Health will be on-site the morning of the event to share helpful resources and information.\n\n \n\nJoyce Quinlan\, pictured above with Group Fitness Coordinator Dina Savitt and Kasparek\, is participating in Pedal to End Cancer as a breast cancer survivor and indoor cycling instructor\, riding in support of other cancer survivors and doing her part to raise money for the cause.  \n\n \n\nFor more information\, email kasparek or call 203.762.8384\, ext. 282. He’ll be joined by a panel of local mental health professionals and providers\, and then the floor will be open for questions. Please join us on Saturday\, Sept. 17\, at the Wilton Family Y as we rock out to the music and sounds of The Tom Petty Project!\n\n\nIn its inaugural year\, while we were “Learning to Fly\,” we raised close to $100\,000! This generosity supports the Riverbrook Regional YMCA’s mission to be open and accessible to all — so that everyone in the communities of Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding has an opportunity to participate in Y membership\, programs\, services\, and social activities\, regardless of financial situation or ability. Initiatives supported through these dollars include the Y’s Financial Assistance Program; SWIMACCESS — free life-saving swim lessons for youth who do not know how to swim; and Summer Camp Assistance for Camp Gordyland in Wilton\, Camp Sunrise & Race4Chase Youth Triathlon Camps in Norwalk.\n\n\nNearly 225 folks came to R@TY last year and heard the sounds of TERRAPIN echo throughout the cool September evening. We know that over 300\, friends\, neighbors\, members\, and sponsors will join us this year for the Tom Petty Project.\n\n\nRock at The Y’s doors open to VIPs at 5:30 p.m. for food\, fellowship\, and fun with General Admission beginning to arrive at 6 p.m. This event boasts an array of food trucks including The Chamo\, Chef Jeff’s BBQ\, and Parlor Pizza with Gofer Ice Cream for dessert (all food vendors available to purchase). SUMMARY:Wilton YMCA Free Parent Workshop:  Tools for Working with Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Wilton Family YMCA\, this free parent workshop\, “Tools for Working with Anxiety\,” will introduce practical tools to interrupt the anxiety loop by purposefully cueing an activation of our parasympathetic nervous system. Using mindful awareness\, breath\, and body we will explore ways to shift our nervous systems from a state of “fight\, flight\, or freeze” to a place of “rest and digest.”\n\n\nThe workshop is presented by Jennifer Barrett\, who has been working with children for over two decades. She is the founder of We Grow Yoga and provides yoga and mindful awareness training to children of all ages as well as to the teachers and parents who guide them. She holds degrees in elementary and special needs education from Boston College. She has a 20 year dedicated yoga practice\, and is an active and registered member of Yoga Alliance. She is certified both through ChildLight Yoga and holds a 200 hour teacher certification through Breathe For Change with the lens of bringing yoga and mindful awareness practices to school communities. DESCRIPTION:The Kiwanis Club of Wilton will have its third annual Oktoberfest at the Wilton YMCA. This is a fun-filled family event with German bier and wine\, bratwurst or chicken\, sauerkraut\, German potato salad\, hot dogs\, french fries and cold soda for the kids.\n\n\nMusic will be provided by the Alpine Squeeze who will play all types of music throughout the evening\, with Hans filling in with his accordion during breaks to keep people up and dancing. The event goes on rain or shine\, but seating will be in the pavilion or under tents\, so weather is not an issue.\n\n\nEntrance fee will be $35 for adults and will include a Bratwurst or Chicken platter with Bier or wine. Children under 21 will be $6\, and will have a hot dog\, French fries\, soda or water.
