SUMMARY:Naturescape Your Yard with Karen Bussolini (Zoom & In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library is excited to present gardener extraordinaire Karen Bussolini in the live Zoom program\, “Naturescape Your Yard\,” on Thursday\, May 30\, at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid program: watch with others in the Rimer Room\, or remotely on Zoom.\n\n\nNaturescaping is landscaping with nature — attracting and sustaining wildlife\, using native and and well-adapted plants\, using resources wisely\, and avoiding environmental pollution. But it also means landscaping like nature. Nobody plants\, waters or fertilizes the forest or the prairie\, yet they survive\, beautifully\, on their own. Naturescaping\, or ecological landscaping\, creates self-sustaining landscapes that function like nature.\n\n\nBussolini will show how to create environment-friendly landscapes that work with nature to reduce maintenance and costs while increasing beauty and enjoyment. She will show inspiring examples of gardens from across the country that conserve resources — time and money as well as natural resources. They also foster diversity\, sustain wildlife\, provide food and incorporate environmentally sound practices to create sustainable yards.\n\n\n“Naturescape Your Yard” is informed by the work of notable ecologists and ecological designers. It also stems from a deep understanding that everything comes from and goes somewhere. It is all connected. The presentation includes big-picture ecological thinking as well as nitty-gritty how-to tips. Additionally\, the images of sustainable yards and gardens presented serve the needs of the people who use them\, look attractive\, and function as small ecosystems.\n\n\nBussolini has been a gardener all her life. She trained as a painter and was an architectural photographer earlier on. Her specialization is now in garden photography\, writing\, speaking and eco-friendly garden coaching/design. She is additionally a Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) accredited Organic Land Care Professional. Among others\, Anne Raver’s feature\, “A Connecticut Hillside of Feisty Beauties” in The New York Times spotlights Bussolini’s garden.\n\n \n\n\nRegistration for this program is required. Please register online at www.wiltonlibrary.org\, or call (203) 762-6334.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of John Lee Clark (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online when Janet Krauss will lead a discussion of a selection of poems by John Lee Clark. Those registered will receive links to the poems and discussion questions in advance of the program.\n\n\nLee Clark brings awareness to what it’s like to “see” the world through his gift as a DeafBlind poet. He is an active spokesperson for his community. Working for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as a Braille and Proctactile Instructor\, he advocates for jobs for disabled people. Lee Clark has a happy family life with his wife and three sons.\n\n\nAs a promoter of Protactile Language\, he reminds one of how Helen Keller was taught to learn words by touch — feel the water running through her fingers in order to know the word water. Protactile Language is the opposite of Sign Language. The former is rooted in contact space as it is explained. John says\, “We feel language! Areas of the body are touched to express our feelings.” Participants will explore his experiences through his poems.\n\n\nNo charge for this program. Advance registration is required. Register online to receive the Zoom session invitation link\, and readings packet. Email Caryn Friedman-Quinn with any questions.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Spring Semester with Mark Schenker: Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us through Tennyson’s Idylls of the King\, a Victorian take on the medieval Arthurian legends.\n\n\nIn the early 19th century\, the rise of Romanticism in Europe generally\, and in England in particular\, led to a renewed interest in medievalism. Consequences of this resurgence persisted into the Victorian Period and included the revival of the Gothic in architecture and of Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic thinking in philosophy and religion.\n\n\nA nationalistic figure from the Middle Age\, King Arthur—who may or may not have been historical—was the subject of treatments by 19th-century writers as diverse as Alfred\, Lord Tennyson and Mark Twain. Earlier\, the 12th-century Geoffrey of Monmouth\, writing in Latin\, placed Arthur in the tradition of British kings\, relying more on his own imagination than on historical sources. In the same century the French poet Chrétien de Troyes introduced the important themes of the Holy Grail\, the court of Camelot\, and the adulterous affair between Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere.\n\n\nIn the 15th century\, Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte D’Arthur in Middle English prose while drawing mainly on French sources. Its publication in 1485 made it one of the first books ever to be printed in England. It was this work that Tennyson used when he published his Idylls of the King\, 12 tales of Arthur and his knights\, written in verse and published from 1859 to 1885.\n\n\nSchenker will present a program in six sessions with reference also to the source tales found in Malory’s text. Participants will read all 12 of Tennyson’s narrative poems and will be directed to read\, if they care to\, the corresponding stories in Malory\, available online. Mark will emphasize connections and contrasts\, and will place Tennyson’s work in its Victorian context.\n\n \n\n\nThere is no charge for the program. These lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. Register online.\n\n\nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired last year. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. He had taught previously at Columbia\, New York University\, and Trinity College (Hartford\, CT). Outside of academia\, Mark has for over 35 years lectured on literature and film\, and has led book discussion series in more than 100 venues in Connecticut\, including public libraries\, museums\, and cultural centers.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Ruth Stone (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online with Janet Krauss leading a discussion of a selection of Ruth Stone’s poems. Links to the poems and discussion questions will be emailed in advance of the program.\n\n\nAs quoted in Poetry Foundation\, “Ruth Stone’s lyrics are known for their accuracy\, strangeness\, and ability to speak to domestic concerns and metaphysical problems at once.” Her poems clearly flow forth from the pain\, loss\, and poverty she endured.\n\n\nStone’s husband\, poet Walter Stone\, committed suicide and left her with their three young children. “Shock and grief of her loss infused her poetry the rest of her life.”\n\n\nStone lived in a rural farmhouse in Vermont for much of her life. Her granddaughter Bianca subsequently established Stone’s simple\, farmhouse home as a poet’s residence after her death. During her later years\, Stone received wide recognition with the publication of her book of poems Ordinary Words (1999). Several more acclaimed books followed. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and secured a professorship of English in 1990 at SUNY Binghamton\, receiving numerous prestigious awards.\n\n\nWriting poems was a saving grace for Stone. When inspired\, she indeed expressed that she “felt a poem coming like a horse galloping towards her and had to catch it – if not….”\n\n \n\n\nExplore the ideas above in the beginning of an introduction to Stone.\n\n\nKrauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery\, Yuganta Press\, and Through the Trees of Autumn\, Spartina Press\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.\n\n\nThere is no charge for this program. Advance registration is required. Register online to receive the Zoom session invitation link\, and readings packet.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
