SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of A. R. Ammons (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by A.R. Ammons. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program.\n\n\nThe spirit of Nature runs through Ammons’ soul. That is the Transcendental belief. A critic said that Ammons adheres “to a fidelity to details of nature” as he writes in a “contemporary conventional style.” He sees his identity as a “part of a larger continuum.”\n\n\nThe poet was born in 1920 and died in 2001. He was born in rural North Carolina on a cotton and tobacco farm during the Great Depression. His farm life inspired his poems. He taught at Cornell from 1964-1998\, won numerous poetry awards\, and the prestigious Bollingen Prize for American Poetry.\n\n\nWe will trace the Transcendental influence of Emerson and Dickinson in his poems.\n\n\nJanet Krauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.\n\n \n\n\nAdvance registration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link and readings packet.\n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Fall Semester with Mark Schenker: A Survey of Literary Utopias (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us on a guided tour of several literary utopias and dystopias spanning several hundred years.\n\n\nEver since Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) created the word “utopia” in the early 16th century\, the double meaning of his coinage has informed centuries of Utopian literature in English. (The Greek outopia means “no place\,” while eutopia means “good place.”) Since More’s Utopia\, writers such as Jonathan Swift and Margaret Atwood have created imagined worlds that reveal the dystopian reality behind the utopian dream.\n\n\nAfter beginning with More’s masterpiece\, Schenker will survey other literary works from each of the past six centuries—books that engage the quest for societal perfection\, the limits of human aspiration\, and the various meanings of the old saying that “the perfect is the enemy of the good.”\n\n\nThe schedule for the series is below (please note that the sessions are not all on the same day of the week and also stretch from September to November):\nSept. 7 – Utopia\, Sir Thomas More\nSept. 14 – Gulliver’s Travels\, Jonathan Swift\nSept. 21 – Erewhon\, Samuel Butler\nSept. 28 – The Handmaid’s Tale\, Margaret Atwood\nOct. 3 – King Lear\, William Shakespeare\nOct. 10 – Station Eleven\, Emily St. John Mandel\nNov. 2 – Cloud Cuckoo Land\, Anthony Doerr.\n\n\nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.  Please email Michael Bellacosa with any questions.\n\n \n\n\nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired at the end of June. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature.\n\n\nThese lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Carl Phillips (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Zoom as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Carl Phillips. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program.\n\n\nIt has been said that Carl Phillips’ vision is “a somber\, autumnal landscape\, one that is illuminated by moments of ephemeral\, ethereal beauty.” Ephemeral\, yes\, but fixed in print as gifts to his readers. Phillips can state an opinion and then follow it with a stunning metaphor to illustrate his abstract comment. He tells\, then shows. We will see all all this happen in the poems we will discuss. Phillips\, the Pulitzer Prize winner of Poetry for 2023\, was born in 1959 in Everett\, Washington. He is Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis where he teaches creative writing. In addition to the Pulitzer\, he has won many other awards. In 1990 he accepted his identity as a gay man. He said “he rediscovered his poetic voice.”\n\n\nKrauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.\n\n\nTo register\, visit the Wilton Library website.\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n	See more related GMW stories...
