Annie Oldenstadt was a friendly face shoppers could always count on to see at Stop & Shop, and now Wilton mourns her loss after learning that Annie lost her battle against breast cancer at age 69 on July 3.
Stop & Shop managers posted a sign at the front of the store near the cashiers Annie used to man, announcing to shoppers that she had passed away:
“It is with great sadness that our beloved Annie has lost her battle with cancer. Her co-workers as well as many of our customers will miss her smiling face and her laugh. Her wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace, Sweet Annie!”
Annie was a favorite fixture not only at Stop & Shop but also at the yearly Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, where she was always front and center for the survivor’s lap that kicked off the event. She had many friends and fans who cheered her on and supported her, especially during the recurrence of her cancer this past year. The community rallied to offer support, cards and assistance.
Universally, residents have posted on socially media about their love and affection for Annie, with “sweet” being the word used most about her in memorial comments. People also remember the way she always greeted shoppers and friends alike with a smile on her face.
Annie Oldenstadt was a graduate of Brien McMahon High School; she would have turned 70 on August 28.
