Are good manners becoming a “lost art” in our crazy, fast-paced, technology-driven world? An upcoming talk at Wilton Library will answer this question and provide friendly, updated advice on proper behavior at dinner parties, cocktail parties, restaurants, business events and formal dinners.

On Wednesday, April 5 at 7 p.m., Dr. Fred Mayo will speak about his recent book, Modern America Manners. Mayo is a retired NYU professor of hospitality and tourism management, and former dean of the Culinary Institute of America.

This event is sponsored by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes increased educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit P.E.O. grants, awards and scholarships to support women’s education.

Mayo will discuss how to enjoy the pleasures of good food, drink and conversation without worrying about what is proper behavior. His highly interactive presentation will also address audience members’ pet peeves and the challenges related to teaching children and grandchildren about the importance of good manners.

Afterward guests will enjoy a light dessert reception and an opportunity to meet the author. Books will be available for purchase from Elm Street Books, and author signing. The book is ideal for business professionals, college students entering the workplace, or anyone interested in a refresher course on manners or an introduction to proper behavior in modern American culture. It is lavishly illustrated with full-color photos highlighting both good and bad manners—a gift idea for college graduation, engagement and wedding, or simply for family reference.
