4th Grade Wilton Warriors Seal Overtime Win Over New Canaan in Playoffs, 22-14
A Nor’ Easter gave way to make for a perfect fall football day as the Warriors ventured out to face the New Canaan Rams in a “win or go home” playoff game. Earlier this season the Warriors were the first team to beat the Rams in two years, and the Rams were out for revenge. The Warriors started out on offense, and despite solid runs from Nick Skillin, Colin Faherty, and Cody Korpan, the drive ended with a fumble inside the red zone. With strong tackling from Denny Dustin and Faherty, coupled with Dustin deflecting a pass, the Warriors thwarted a promising Rams’ drive. Rebutting on offense, the Warriors offered up their “Beast Package” once again. The signature wedge featuring August Furman under center, with Cole Herbst, Mark Whitman, Matthew Fogarty, Jack Condon, Cooper Rekow, and Wyatt Hoffstatter on the line with Bly Christianson and Wyatt Kreter in the backfield, and Liam Pierson at quarterback, moved the ball down the field methodically as usual. Despite great blocking, and angry runs from Pierson, the drive stalled deep inside Rams’ territory.
The second quarter began with a great Warrior defensive effort with punishing tackles from Charlie Heffernan and Brady Corry, capped with a Dylan Flanagan and Michael Lenz sack attack. The Warriors kept the pressure on with the Beast Package, and then Pierson threw the “Rin Tin Finn” pass play to none other than Finn Snyder for a huge gain. Next Corry ran the ball for a touchdown, and Jaxon Lin kicked a two point conversion: Warriors 8, Rams 0. After a successful stand on defense, with a Corry interception, the Warriors’ offense coughed the ball up with two ticks on the clock, resulting in a Rams’ touchdown, and with the successful kick, the score was tied at the half. …Would the Warriors be able to rally after this?
The Rams started the second half with the ball, and their drive took the entire quarter. After strong defensive play from Trey Rivera, Korpan, Henry Snow, Michael Duarte, Heffernan, Dustin, and the Gang Tacklers, the Warriors had the ball to begin the fourth quarter. Once again, the Beast Package moved the ball down the field, fueled by Corry runs and great blocking. Then big runs by Skillin and Faherty resulted in a Warrior touchdown: 14-8 Warriors. Despite great tackles by Emmett Sommer, Heffernan, and Corry, the Rams answered with a late touchdown of their own, but as the kick was wide left, forcing the game to overtime!
The Warriors scored promptly with a Faherty touchdown run followed by a Skillin two-point run; a Corry interception sealed the win swift and salty. Can this team do the same against another tough Rams’ Team next week!? Stay tuned!
