When a child is in distress, every second feels heavier, every uncertainty sharper. For one Wilton family, a recent visit to the Cohen Pediatric Emergency Center at Norwalk Hospital turned a moment of fear into an experience defined by compassion, clarity and exceptional care.
Alicia Lawrence’s journey began after her son, 17, cut his hand open while helping to move a refrigerator. When the bleeding didn’t stop, she knew it was time to act fast. From the moment she and her family stepped through the Cohen Pediatric Emergency Center room doors at Norwalk Hospital, they were met with warmth and immediate attention rather than the chaos and confusion many parents brace for.
“The triage nurse not only moved quickly to assess my son but also took the time to speak directly to him by explaining each step of what they were about to do. This soothed his nerves and restored a sense of control,” Lawrence said.
Within minutes, the family was settled into a newly remodeled room specialized for pediatric care. The brightly lit room with a larger-than-life portrait of an aquatic sea turtle helped ease the family’s mind shifting their focus from a wait time that felt barely noticeable, but it was what happened next that left a lasting impression on the Lawrence family.
Dr. Adam Vella, a Connecticut Children’s pediatric emergency physician and clinical director of the Cohen Pediatric Emergency Center, entered the room with a calm presence that instantly shifted the atmosphere.
“Pediatric emergencies can overwhelm even the most composed parents, but his gentle, direct and deeply empathetic demeanor made all the difference. He spoke to my son with respect and reassurance, and we felt safe and heard,” Lawrence said.
“Dr. Vella’s assessment was swift and accurate, and his communication with us was clear, patient and thorough,” Lawrence said.
The Connecticut Children’s specialist took time to walk the Lawrence family through every test, decision and next step.
“He answered all of our questions with steady guidance and genuine concern. Not only for my son’s well‑being, but for how I was coping in the moment. That human connection was as healing as the medical care itself,” Lawrence said.
The environment around them reinforced that sense of safety. The newly opened $1.75 million pediatric emergency center staffed with specialists from Connecticut Children’s, was clean, thoughtfully organized and intentionally designed for children and teens. Colorful walls, kid-friendly equipment and a layout that minimized stress all contributed to an atmosphere where fear could soften into trust. Throughout the visit, communication felt seamless, and the family never felt hurried or overlooked.
