UPDATE: Wednesday, May 22, 4 P.M. — Wilton Police Lt. Anna Tornello provided more details on the gas main break that occurred on Monday, May 20, with additional information on response to the accident.

According to Tornello, the crew working at the intersection of Wolfpit and Horseshoe Rds. was from NY-Conn, a company hired by CT Department of Transportation to upgrade traffic signals and crosswalks, as part of a statewide grant program. Two intersections in Wilton are being improved as part of this grant program, and Town of Wilton officials have been supplying input in coordination with the to CT-DOT.

At Wolfpit and Horseshoe Rds., the NY-Conn crew is installing upgraded traffic lights and two crosswalks with pedestrian pads and signals. The intersection is part of Rte. 106, a state road. The work is not part of the other CT-DOT project three miles south on Rte. 106 along New Canaan Rd.

Contrary to what GMW reported earlier, no utility services were restricted or interrupted due to the gas leak. Tornello said that Eversource Gas did not shut off the gas, but instead they created a bypass in the section by the leak, which allowed them to stop gas flow and repair the leak without interrupting service.

UPDATE: Tuesday, May 21, 8:45 A.M. — Police report that repairs have been completed and all roads are now open.

UPDATE [5:45 P.M.] — Tornello told GMW that area residents will have access to their homes, “albeit with some detours.”

WILTON, CT: Monday, May 20, 2024, 4:00 P.M. — A construction crew working at the corner of Wolfpit Rd. and Horseshoe Rd. struck an 8-inch Eversource gas line shortly after noon on Monday. Wilton Fire and Police Departments responded, closing the adjacent roads and setting up a perimeter around the area that was closed to all vehicular traffic.

According to Wilton Police Lt. Anna Tornello, “the closure of adjacent roads was necessary to implement safety measures until Eversource could arrive on scene and take over the repairs.”

School buses were delayed and rerouted for their afternoon routes. Wilton Police posted on Facebook that there was “no danger to the students of Miller-Driscoll [School].”

Tornello said that the roads would remain closed until repairs could be completed, which she expected would be later on Monday evening.

Wolfpit was closed from Rte. 7/Danbury Rd. to Belden Hill Rd. Additionally, access was blocked from the Horseshoe Rd./River Rd. intersection, and on Range Rd., which was closed from Wolfpit Rd. to McFadden Dr.

Residents living within the closed traffic zone were told that the only access allowed was pedestrian.

Photos shared by Wilton Police on social media show a construction crew with vehicles bearing the markings of NY-Conn Corporation, a Danbury-based electrical contracting firm that, according to its website, specializes in commercial, industrial and traffic signalization work, among other areas. GOOD Morning Wilton has reached out to the company and Lt. Tornello for additional details and will update the story accordingly.
