Why it’s Important: The Board of Finance (BOF) is a six-member board that oversees the Town of Wilton’s finances. Each BOF member serves a four-year term. The most important function of the Board of Finance is to recommend a budget and a mill rate to the Annual Town Meeting — the BOF can also adjust proposed Town and School budgets in specific ways. In addition, the BOF designates the external auditor, approves supplemental appropriations, reviews bonding proposals before the Annual Town Meeting approves investments of Town funds.
Who’s on the Board: BOF members Tim Birch (D), Rudy Escalante (R) and Prasad Iyer (R) were elected in 2023. Board member Sandy Arkell (D) was appointed to fill a seat in 2020 and then elected to the BOF in 2021, but she has declined to run again. BOF Vice Chair Stewart Koenigsberg (R) is terming out after his second term ends in November. And BOF Chair Matt Raimondi (R) is running for re-election after first being elected in 2021.
What’s at Stake: There’s a lot of financial acumen on the ballot this year as well as outspoken individuals. Given how important oversight of the town’s finances have become — along with someone needing to right the financial ship after a very rocky year in Town Hall’s Finance Department — all eyes are watching the race carefully.
Kim Healy opted not to run for a second term on the Board of Selectmen, where she often butted heads with First Selectman Toni Boucher and was a very vocal watchdog over spending while trying to get access to accurate numbers for various projects and accounts. Getting onto the BOF might give her freedom to speak up even more. Incumbent Chair Matt Raimondi has been very visibly keeping Town Hall’s feet to the fire while also forging a stronger relationship with the Board of Education. Eric Fanwick is wrapping up his second term at P&Z and has been very frank about where he sees the problems and what to do about it. And while Roberts is newcomer to municipal government, she’s eager to roll up her sleeves and pitch in.
There are three open seats and four candidates. Voters can vote for up to three candidates for four-year terms.
