Author Talk: Lee Mandel – Sterling Hayden’s Wars
June 19, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
Author Lee Mandel sheds light on the private wars of Sterling Hayden, examining his personal life, custody battles–which included kidnapping his four children–alcohol and substance abuse, and depression.
Sterling Hayden was a Hollywood actor who appeared in well-known films including The Asphalt Jungle, Dr. Strangelove and The Godfather. Casting aside his acting career, he trained as a commando in Europe and then joined the OSS, earning a Silver Star for his distinguished service. He became a Communist Party-sympathizer after the war that came back to haunt him.
This story comes close to home since the Haydens moved to Wilton in 1968. Sterling died in May of 1986. Kitty and son David still reside in Wilton.
Mandel has a long and decorated history, having served in the Navy before retiring in 2013 as the Command Flight Surgeon, Naval Safety Center, Norfolk, Virginia. Through his career he has authored several history publications for history and military history journals.
