For siblings, the experience of having a brother or sister with special needs can be uniquely enriching. Among other things, it provides opportunities to develop empathy, acceptance and appreciation of differences, and it encourages learning about various relationships. On the other hand, siblings can also feel deeply confused, emotionally neglected and limited in their ability to achieve.
School psychologist David P. Sylvestro, MA, CSP, will examine how having a child with special needs can affect all family members and explain how parents can be proactive in ensuring, as best as possible, that siblings don’t feel sidelined when attention is necessarily focused on their sibs with special needs.
Sylvestro will also discuss how to keep tabs on the emotional climate of the household; educate, explain and elicit questions from siblings (and others); ensure all kids feel prized, recognized and celebrated; and enhance communication between parents/caregivers.
There is no charge for participation in this event. Register online.
The event is presented by SPED*NET in partnership with the Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA.
