Wilton Historical Society Weekend Workshops — Children’s Books

Several children’s authors have called Wilton home over the years, including Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire, who worked as a team to create classics such as Abraham Lincoln (winner of the Caldecott Medal in 1940), and Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths, published in 1962. E. Boyd Smith’s The Farm Book and The Railroad Book include images directly inspired by Wilton scenes.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wilton Historical Society’s museum educator Catherine Lipper — herself a published children’s book author and illustrator — will lead participants in making their own illustrated stories using glossy hardcover books and acrylic paints while discussing the rich and impactful lives of historical authors and their contributions to Wilton. Kids can show off their creativity and imagination!

Suggested for ages 6-10. The cost for members is $10 per child; non-members are $15 per child. Email the Wilton Historical Society to register.

Did You Know: Elmer Boyd Smith and his wife Mary lived on Old Highway in Wilton. Both were active in a variety of Wilton community groups, including the Wilton Library Association and the School Board. Mary became one of the first Wilton women to register to vote when women earned the right to vote on school issues in 1912.
